\u00a0<\/span>Joshua 10 recounts the fearsome military attack upon Gibeon perpetrated by Adoni-Zedek and his Aramean allies, and their ultimate defeat by God and the Israelites. One of the most well-known miracles in all of Tanach comprises a key part of God\u2019s assistance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is assumed that any army fights best during the daylight hours (see Genesis 14:15; II Kings 7:5-7,). So the Israelites were accommodated by the Divine, with a miracle being wrought in accordance with Joshua\u2019s demand:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On that occasion, when the LORD routed the Amorites before the Israelites, Joshua addressed the LORD; he said in the presence of the Israelites:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cStand still, O sun, at Gibeon,<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>O moon, in the Valley of Aijalon!\u201d<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>And the sun stood still<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>And the moon halted,<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>While a nation wreaked judgment on its foes<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Thus the sun halted in midheaven, and did not press on to set, for a whole day (verses 12-13)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malbim <\/span>explains what is meant, when the Tanach presents Joshua\u2019s instructions to God, as unique in the annals of prophecy: \u201c<\/span>Neither before nor since, has there ever been such a day, when the LORD acted on words spoken by a man.\u201d Malbim points out that, unlike other prophets, Joshua did not \u201cpray,\u201d but rather \u201cspoke,\u201d and that this occasion was truly groundbreaking because God intended neither to aggrandize His reputation, nor to save the Israelites from their enemies, but simply to demonstrate that He was fighting on the Israelites\u2019 behalf (v. 14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It could be said that while Joshua was acting upon the general instructions that he had received from Moses, who had said to him that God would give the Promised Land to the Israelites (Deut. 31:7-8, 23), Joshua took these instructions \u201ca step further\u201d by directing God to show Himself as an ally of the Israelites and thereby suspending temporarily even the laws of nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God had surprised Moses by choosing Joshua as his successor (Numbers 27:18,) and the relationship between mentor and student, as described in the Talmud, was to be that the latter constituted merely a reflection of the former: \u201cThe face of Moses was as bright as the face of the sun; the face of Joshua was like the face of the moon\u201d (Bava Batra 75a). But as is often the case, the student, who is able to stand on the shoulders of his teacher, inevitably surpasses him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Frustrated in their attempt to defeat the Israelites, five kings in Canaan decide to take out their frustrations on the Gibeonites for making peace with the Israelites. Reminiscent of the battle of the five kings and four kings at the time of Abraham, this battle drags the Israelites into a local Canaanite dispute. Joshua brings reinforcements to attack the five kings and defeats them with the help of two miracles. The first is a hailstorm- reminiscent of the plague of hail. The second is actually the opposite of a plague in Egypt. This time, instead of God enveloping the land with darkness, Joshua requests that the sun stay in the sky longer to aid in the battle. Why is the sun staying in the sky so important? If God matches the hail plague a darkness plague would have been perfect to give the Israelites cover to attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The answer to this question may be at the end of the chapter. The five kings flee the battle scene and all hide in a cave. Joshua finds out and orders the cave shut until the battle is complete. Once the five city-states are routed, Joshua opens the cave and brings out the defeated rulers. The kings hide in the cave because they feel they can slip away into the darkness. At the beginning of the chapter they thought they could avoid the Israelites by attacking an ally, trying to secretly avoid the Israelites. The message of the sun is that there is nowhere to hide. Try to defeat us by attacking our friends instead? We will find you. Try to flee to the darkness of a cave? We will find you. Try to flee the battlefield? We will find you. Joshua records this message in an epic poem:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2014as is written in the Book of Jashar. Thus the sun halted in midheaven, and did not press on to set, for a whole day (verses 12-13).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is the Book of Jashar? Rashi explains that this is the book of Genesis. Verse 13 does not mean that Joshua recorded this in a new book. Instead, it is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Jacob. Jacob blesses Joseph that \u201cThe fame of his descendants will fill the nations.\u201d That incident happens when Joseph\u2019s descendant Joshua halts the sun. Ralbag gives the straightforward answer that it was a book of epic poems that was lost in the expulsion. This is most likely a book related to the book of the wars of God mentioned in the Torah.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

At least one of the medieval commentaries was loath to adopt the simple reading of our text, for to do so would allow Joshua\u2019s deed to easily eclipse the miraculous exploits of his own mentor Moses. Rabbi Levi ben Gershom, who was active in fourteenth-century France and known as Gersonides or Ralbag, explains that the thrust of the passage does not concern supernatural celestial events, but rather, the victory of the Israelites. Joshua\u2019s plea was that:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Before the sun had set at Givon or the moon at the valley of Ayalon, the people of Israel would complete the rout of their foes.... The people were able to miraculously avenge themselves...in such a short time...for God\u2019s abilities are not limited...and He heeded Joshua\u2019s prayer. (Gersonides on Josh. 10:12)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In other words, the miracle was not that the sun actually stood still, but rather that the people of Israel succeeded in thoroughly trouncing the southern kings in such a very short time, before the sun completed its course and began to set. The physical motion of the sun did not slow, but rather Israel was able to inflict a crushing defeat that should have taken a much longer period of time to accomplish. God acceded by granting them a swift and utter victory, \u201cbecause God waged war for Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Besides being an accomplished biblical commentator and philosopher, Gersonides was also an astronomer and a mathematician. Gersonides\u2019 interpretation is a function of his scientific empiricism and its downplay or dismissal of miracles. The natural laws are God\u2019s ultimate creation and the universe is governed in accordance with them. God did not formulate perfect laws in order to upset them without good cause. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is important to emphasize that Gersonides does not question God\u2019s ability to slow or stop the sun\u2019s progress, but rather His willingness to do so: \u201cGod, blessed be He, does not affect miracles except for some pressing need or in order to inculcate true opinions, and here neither of these conditions applied.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why, avers Gersonides, need God intervene to halt the motion of the sun if the point of the matter was for Israel to achieve victory? They could well accomplish that aim without an overt display of divine prowess. The text casts the matter in a purely utilitarian light: God interceded so that Israel might militarily prevail, not so that they may come to appreciate some abstract truth about His governance of the world. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

While the precise circumstances of our chapter are relatively unknown, some of its lines are quite famous, particularly, \u201cSun stand still in Gibeon and moon in the valley of Ayalon\u201d (verse 12).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Although popular lore tends to take this literally\u2014and even searches ancient records for evidence of related astronomical phenomena\u2014some Jewish authorities found that interpretation untenable. Here, for instance is the commentary of Gersonides (known as Ralbag, R. Levi ben Gershom; Provence, 1288-1344):<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One the many worthy questions raised by this episode is that if the sun stood still and its visible movement was nullified, then this wonder would be greater by far than all the wonders performed by Moses. All of those concerned natural phenomena of a lower order while this is of a significantly higher order\u2026 if this were so, it would contradict the Torah\u2019s stipulation that \u201cNo prophet comparable to Moses has arisen for Israel\u2026 in respect of all the wonders and signs that he performed in sight of all Israel.\u201d (Dt. 34:10-11)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

How, then, does Gersonides interpret the verse? He considers it a figure of speech, comparable to \u201ctime stood still.\u201d \u00a0Just as we might use that expression to describe an activity that took less time than anticipated, so does the Book of Joshua. Saying that \u201cthe sun stood still,\u201d signifies that the pursuit and subduing of the combined enemy forces gathered at Gibeon that ordinarily would have taken more time than was available at that hour of the day (since battles were not fought at night), was, miraculously, accomplished in a limited amount of daylight.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

At the end of Joshua 9, we left the clan of the Gibeonites in a state of servitude to the people of Israel. Rather than face near certain extinction (<\/span>cherem<\/span><\/em>), the Gibeonites pretended to wander from far away and placed themselves under the sworn protection of the Israelites. Apparently, having sworn by God\u2019s name, the Israelites felt bound by the oaths, even though derived under false pretenses. As for the Gibeonites, now condemned to perform menial tasks (wood cutting and water drawing) on behalf of the Israelites and eventually in the service of the Temple in Jerusalem, they still must have felt tremendous relief. Their deception had worked; they were allowed to live. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

And now that strategy is put to the test. Kings of five southern city-states mobilized to wage war against the newcomers, but selected the weaker members of this emerging alliance. They determined to attack Gibeon. In the invitation of the King of Jerusalem to his fellow monarchs: \u201cCome up and help me defeat Gibeon; for it has come to terms with Joshua and the Israelites (10:4).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Facing this assault from the Amorite kings, the Gibeonites sent a frantic message to Joshua at Gilgal: Do not fail your servants, come up quickly and aid us and deliver us (10:6).\u201d Remarkably, Joshua and the Israelites, under instruction from God, honor their plea, and rush to defend their new allies from this attack.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why did they do that? Couldn\u2019t they have let the Amorites wipe out the Gibeonites and taken care of the whole issue for them? After all, the Gibeonites had deceived their way into this alliance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But they did not stand by. Recognizing that the fledgling nation Israel would only be able to live up to its mission if it were known as the people whose word is their bond, the Israelites realize that they must fulfill their promises, honor their oaths. Otherwise, Israel would just be one more power drunk nation, seeking its own gain as a worthy ultimate goal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But Joshua\u2019s Israel isn\u2019t meant to be just another mendacious country. Its justification, and ours, is to live up to a higher standard. We are called to be the nation that is true to its word, however inconvenient. By demonstrating the strongest possible integrity, we hold out the promise that humanity can surpass its own limits, that we can show humanity how to fashion a world of honor, truth, and commitment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If Joshua were looking for a way out of the conundrum created in chapter 9, he seems to receive the perfect opportunity in chapter 10. The Gibeonites, who had lied their way to a covenantal alliance with the Israelites, were now being threatened by their neighbors for that act of betrayal. To abandon them to face the consequences of their actions seems to be justice so poetic that it could be ascribed to a Divine guiding hand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joshua raises this very possibility in a midrashic conversation with God, and it receives a forceful answer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\"At that hour Joshua said: Will I bother the congregation for the sake of these strangers?\" \u00a0Endanger my own people to protect people who should be my enemy? who tricked us? Why bother?<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>\"God responded to him: Joshua, if you distance those who are distant from you, in the end you will distance those who are close to you. Go learn from your own roots- aren't they from strangers? As it says: Joseph had two sons...who Osnat, daughter of Poti-Phera, priest of On gave birth to...\" (Bamidbar Rabba 8:4)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When we start redrawing lines of who's in and who's out, where does it stop, Joshua? Are you so sure you'll be in? You, too, have problematic lineage...<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But when you act to bring closer those who are distant, when you come to the rescue of the Gibeonites, you merit what is arguably the greatest Divine intervention in history. \"There was never a day like this before or after, that God listened to a man's voice, for God fights for Israel\" (Joshua 10:14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is more, you achieve the tribal destiny predicted for Ephraim by Jacob, \"Lo, this is written in the 'Book of the Upright'\" (Joshua 10:13).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ephraim, the child whose birth signified prosperity among the nations (\"For God has made me fruitful in the land of my oppression\" Genesis 41:52), has a future described along similar lines in Jacob's blessing: \"and his children will fill the nations\" (Genesis 49:19). When did this happen? When Joshua sanctified God's name by standing by those strangers, the Gibeonites, and God responded by performing a miracle whose grandeur was the talk of all the nations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When circumstances invite us to circle the wagons, worry about our own, and let \"those strangers\" around us fend for themselves, regardless of our commitments to them, chapter 11 reminds us that to 'bring closer those who are distant' is both our responsibility, and the key to realizing our ultimate destiny.<\/span><\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":37638,"alt":"","title":"abraham the Joshua 10 finds our hero called upon by the Gibeonites to help defend them against the five Amorite kings. Unsurprisingly and with the mighty aid of God, Joshua\u2019s armies defeat the Amorites, setting the Israelites on a pattern of military victories throughout the next few chapters. One by one, each nation falls at the hands of the Israelites, who are backed by a very active, very violent God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God Godself is a participant in the battle, and even sends hailstones after the kings and their armies have already begun their retreat (v. 11)! In the next verse, Joshua addresses God, saying: \u201cStand still, O sun, at Gibeon, O moon, in the Valley of Ayalon!\u201d And, just like that, the celestial bodies halt, hovering above a triumphant Israel. Neither before nor since, the text declares, has there been such an occasion when God has heeded the words of a man.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This image of Joshua standing defiantly before God and commanding the elements of nature brings to mind the Talmud\u2019s Honi Hama\u2019agel, the circle drawer. Honi succeeds in bringing down rain by refusing to move from the circle he has drawn until God fulfills his request. Though Honi is admonished by Shimon Ben Shetah, who compares Honi to a child throwing a tantrum, in moments of anguish, anger, or desperation it is somewhat empowering to imagine that God might yield to raw human emotion just as a friend or parent might. God weeps, God is angry, God is joyful. God\u2019s emotional spectrum is reflected in us, and when we are desperate for drink, we hope that God feels our thirst.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But in Joshua 10, we are warned of the potential dangers in this theology. In today\u2019s world, rampant with fear and violence, I need to believe in a God who transcends human emotional and intellectual capabilities, in a God who will keep us from throwing stones after we have already won the battle; or even in a God who will guide us away from the battlefield to begin with. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Biblical miracles are hard to explain scientifically. Indeed, a miracle, almost by definition, defies natural explanation. The splitting of the sea, manna from Heaven, the oil lasting eight days -- these are the stories that form the foundation of Judaism...and are deeply problematic for rational, scientifically-minded people. Perhaps the most challenging is Joshua\u2019s commanding the sun and the moon to \u201cstand still\u201d in chapter 10, verses 12-13.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet perhaps we\u2019re asking the wrong questions. \u201cHow can we accept this violation of the natural law?\u201d would force us to either reject the Biblical account entirely or ignore scientific fact. Instead, let\u2019s think about both what a \u201cmiracle\u201d is, and a better understanding of the event described.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew word for <\/span>nes<\/span><\/i>, miracle, really means a sign, something that engenders awe and wonder. That\u2019s why we talk about \u201cthe miracle of birth\u201d or, in our daily liturgy, the <\/span>nisim b\u2019chol yom<\/span><\/i>, the \u201cmiracles of the every day\u201d which include getting dressed and walking. These \u201cmiracles\u201d don\u2019t suspend the laws of nature; they have easy and clear scientific explanations. Rather, they are designed to help us feel a deeper sense of majesty and gratitude. So let\u2019s start by assuming that this \u201cmiracle\u201d wasn\u2019t something that went against science, but rather, a moment that felt majestic or inspiring.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If so, then a discovery in 2017 can also help us understand Joshua causing the sun to \u201cstand still.\u201d Using records from Egyptian records and astronomical data, in addition to Biblical sources, it seems that there was an annular eclipse in the Near East on October 30, 1207 BCE. As Colin Humphreys, one of the authors of the paper outlining this finding<\/span> notes<\/span><\/a> that:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Modern English translations, which follow the King James translation of 1611, usually interpret this text to mean that the sun and moon stopped moving...But going back to the original Hebrew text, we determined that an alternative meaning could be that the sun and moon just stopped doing what they normally do: they stopped shining.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So rather than trying to shoehorn science into a Biblical text, and try to read it in a way that was never intended, we can start with the <\/span>science <\/span><\/i>to help us better understand how and why the Biblical writers told this story.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After all, the Bible had no sense of history or science as we understand them as disciplines today, and they didn\u2019t have the technology to understand how and why the world works the way it does. And to me, our human ability to combine linguistics, astronomy and history to help us understand our past is just as much of a miracle as what Joshua performed.<\/span>

In Chapter 10 of the Book of Joshua we read about peace-making, self-preservation and the miracles that occur as a result.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The leadership of Gibeon, close neighbors to where the Israelites were then encamped and witnesses to the battles at Jericho and Ai, hatch a plan to feign allegiance with the Israelites in order to protect themselves. Joshua and his army, though not without their suspicions of trickery, go along with the Gibeonite proposal for a peace accord. They essentially sign on the dotted line, though with some conditions of their own that will ensure peace with Gibeon while keeping them at arms length, proving that your peace partners need not be your friends. Joshua recognizes this to be a tenuous alliance but nevertheless, for the sake of peace, worth the risk.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The reaction from the Amorites, five very significant and powerful kingdoms, is one all too familiar to the Jewish people. They\u2019re furious with the Gibeonites for their audacity to make peace with the Israelites, so they form an alliance and attack Gibeon. The King of Gibeon beseeches Joshua to come to their aid, and perhaps with an understanding of \u201ckeep your enemies closer\u201d (it wasn\u2019t original to Michael Corleone) and to demonstrate the authenticity and sincerity of the Israelite\u2019s peace treaty, Joshua sends out the Israelite army to provide Gibeonite defense.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For the Israelites, this uncomfortable peace process delivered a tangible new strategic military opportunity. The Amorites were so blinded by their opposition to peace that they left their fortified kingdoms unguarded and amassed themselves to oppose their peace-seeking brethren. Consequently, an opportunity for the Israelites conquest of substantial territory was opened. But not just military gain came from this commitment to the peace accord. The Israelites and their peace partners were witness to the miracle God brought of \u201cstones from heaven\u201d to vanquish the Amorites, and the entire world was witness to the subsequent miracle of the sun and moon standing still so this battle could be completed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The non-military outcome of that one unlikely peace treaty between two improbable parties was that the Israelites confirmed that God was helping them. And their enemies and peace partners knew as well that the Israelites had God in their corner, and the rest of the world knew that God was in control of the universe: tangible physical and spiritual evidence of the rewards of peace.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. A completely unprecedented event<\/span><\/i>. Take note: \u201cNeither before nor since has there ever been such a day, when the LORD acted on words spoken by a man\u2026\u201d What was this special occasion? See verses 12-14.<\/span><\/span>\r\n

  2. Some \u201cExodus Echoes\u201d<\/span><\/i>: Verse 11 mentions hailstones, and verse 21, \u201cno one so much as snarled at the Israelites,\u201d which is totally reminiscent of Exodus 11:7 - check it out.<\/span><\/span>\r\n

  3. Even humiliation has its limits<\/span><\/i>. The bodies of the five defeated kings were hung (or impaled), but taken down before nightfall (verse 26), in order to dishonor or defile the corpses, as instructed in Deuteronomy 21:22-23.<\/span><\/span>\r\n

  4. Testimony from the field<\/i>. The large stones that close up the cave where the five kings were hiding, remain there \u201cto this very day,\u201d (v. 27), joining the large pile of stones, under which is buried the king of Ai, that also bear witness later on (8:27).\r\n\r\n
