But the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> said to Joshua, \u201cDo not be afraid of them; tomorrow at this time I will have them all lying slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots\u201d (verse 6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The 11<\/span>th<\/span> chapter begins with Joshua\u2019s conquest of the north following his conquest of the south in the previous chapter. God sends Joshua to battle with the directive in verse 6. Radak wonders why God only asked Joshua to hamstring the horses and burn the chariots in this battle and not any other. He answers simply that this battle was the first that the Israleites faced against chariots and horses. The first two battles - Jericho and Ai - were walled cities. The next battle was an intervention on behalf of the Gibeonites with no open-field warfare it seems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He then asks why only the chariots were destroyed and horses maimed. What about other animals of war- like camels or donkeys? He answers that question by focusing on the fact that horses at that time were primarily used for war. Camels and donkeys had other peaceful uses. God did not want the Israelites to start using the advanced weapons- the tank of the ancient world- and forget that God was the one who was helping them succeed. As King David writes in Psalm 20: \u201cThey [call] on chariots, they [call] on horses, but we call on the name of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> our God.\u201d This answer focuses on God\u2019s role in defeating the enemy armies, but perhaps God is trying to show the opposite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There is another poem that involves horses and chariots: \u201cThen Moses and the Israelites sang this song to God. They said: I will sing to God, for He has triumphed gloriously; Horse and driver He has hurled into the sea\u201d (Exodus 15:1). God defeated the Egyptian chariots and horses. At that time the people were mere slaves coming out of Egypt. Now they are a powerful fighting force on the brink of taking over the land. This time, God gives the people the directive to defeat the chariots and horses. God is not concerned that the people will stop believing in God\u2019s assistance. Instead, God wants the people to see how far they have come since the Exodus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this chapter, the Israelites have to overcome a broad coalition of Canaanite forces arrayed against them at a place called Mei Merom. While some of their places of origin are unidentified (Madon, Shimron, Akhshaf), they are led by the king of Hatzor in the Upper Galilee, today a UNESCO World Heritage site, whose excavation by Yigal Yadin was a milestone in Israeli biblical archaeology. At the time of Joshua, Hatzor was something akin to a regional center (\u201cthe head [<\/span>rosh<\/span><\/i>] of all those other kingdoms,\u201d v. 11) so it is understandable why the king of Hatzor would play a central role in this affair.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God told Joshua \u201cnot to fear,\u201d promised him victory over this vast enemy, and instructed him \u201cto hamstring their horses and burn their chariots\u201d (6). Since the battle would already have been won, what point could there be in doing permanent damage to the horses?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In our comments on Chapter Six, we addressed the weaning of the Israelites off their dependence on divine intervention and their training to gradually assume responsibility for their own destiny. This act, for all that it appears to be gratuitous cruelty to animals, is another step in that process. Horses served military functions almost exclusively\u2014throughout the Bible, oxen pull the plows, donkeys are the beasts of burden, and long trips are taken on camels\u2014so God ordered them to destroy the enemy\u2019s chariots and hamstring their horses to reinforce the point that the Israelites\u2019 fortunes of war depended not only on their growing military prowess but on their obedience to Him, as well. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\"For it was the LORD\u2019s doing to stiffen their hearts to give battle to Israel, in order that they might be proscribed without quarter and wiped out, as the LORD had commanded Moses\" (Joshua 11:20).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In our chapter, God hardens the hearts of the Canaanite kings, so that they will wage war against the Israelites, and be utterly destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What does it mean, \u201cto harden one\u2019s heart\u201d? In the Torah, this \u201cheart hardening\u201d seems to be God\u2019s standard procedure to get tyrants overthrown. It teaches us that oppression and corruption ultimately do not pay, and lead up to defeat and destruction.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We remember that, long before hardening the hearts of the Canaanite rulers, God hardens the heart of Pharaoh, so that the plagues can take place, and the Israelites can leave Egypt. Pharaoh irreducibly made himself prisoner of a reality from which he could not escape; his worldview became petrified, and he himself became a slave to his addiction to power, which led to his defeat.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

By the time of their conquest by Joshua and the Israelites, the Canaanites had been ruled by kings whose conduct were as despicable as Pharaoh\u2019s. However, their whole situation had aggravating circumstances in relation to Egypt\u2019s. Pharaoh was a recent despot, and his people suffered the consequences of his lack of repentance; but they did not deserve to be wiped out of the face of the earth. The Canaanites, through their exposure to the evil ways of their rulers over generations, had gradually become more and more corrupt, hence irredeemable. The hardness of their hearts was too ingrained to be reversed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God hardens the hearts of tyrants by exposing them to an evil inclination, to which they become enslaved. However, there are always ways out of defilement. When the Hebrews in Egypt reach their lowest level of degradation, this is when they cry out to God for help. The corruption of Egypt had certainly contaminated them; yet, from the depths of their abasement, they find their voice to call out for physical redemption \u2013 and their spiritual redemption ensues as a consequence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The hardness of a tyrant\u2019s heart is contagious. No overt expressions of divine involvement seem to accompany the battles against the northern kings, although the text does state that the victory was His: \u201cGod said to Joshua: \u2018Be not afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give all of them as corpses before Israel\u201d (11:6). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

At Jericho, in glaring contrast, the narrative emphasized the role of the Ark of the Covenant, the physical manifestation of God\u2019s presence. How different is the war against the northern kings! Here, it is Joshua who engages them in battle, and while the text mentions that \u201cGod gave them into Israel\u2019s hand\u201d (v. 8), it offers no further elaboration on the nature of His involvement. The recurring emphasis of the text is not on God\u2019s role but rather on Joshua\u2019s role.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The two intermediate battles can now be more precisely located within the progression. At the battle of the Ai, it was God who provided both the battle plan as well as the pivotal signal. While it was Joshua and the people who physically engaged the enemy in battle and defeated them, it was God who brought them victory by providing the strategic plan and the critical timing. The victory may therefore be described as a dynamic combination of divine intervention and inspired human deed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Concerning the southern kings, God\u2019s intrusion into the human arena to ensure an Israelite victory was only after His people had engaged the enemy in battle and roundly defeated them. His intervention was limited to the aftermath of their victory. God provided Joshua with the opportunity to wipe out the enemy forces so that they could not regroup for another battle, but the initial triumph was entirely a function of human initiative.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These \u201cchapters of conquest\u201d yield a remarkable evolution: As the narratives unfold, God\u2019s overt intervention declines, matched by a corresponding increase in the people of Israel\u2019s active participation in securing their own victory. However, the book is exceedingly careful to make clear that decreased overt divine intervention does not mean God\u2019s absence. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

God is just as aware, just as immediate, and just as instrumental in guiding events according to His will. The only thing that changes during the course of the chapters is the transparency and prominence of that involvement, in order to afford human beings the opportunity to take an active part in shaping their destiny, to choose the trajectory if not the outcome, and to spiritually grow and mature as a result.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  3. Geography lesson<\/span><\/i>. In verses 16-17 you\u2019ll find all the important regional place names of Biblical Israel, just as they might have been taught in a geography class in 1200 BCE.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. War and peace<\/span><\/i>. Why did only the Gibeonites want to secure peace with the Israelites? Why did all the others choose to fight? In verse 20 there\u2019s an answer, which may remind you of the plagues in Egypt (such as Exodus 7:13).
