Imagine what the political map looked like when Israel was divided into 32 city-states (don't forget the Gibeonites), each with its own king. And (spoiler alert!) - next chapter we'll find out that those 32 kings only represent a small portion of the population of the land!

The poetic structure of the chapter, which arranges each king on his own line, followed by a long space, and then the word "one", highlights the individuality of each entity. The only time they came together was to make war against Israel, and from their abject failure, we can assume that their war-time unification was not very successful. Thirty-one mini-armies, each with its own hierarchies and chain of command, is given graphic representation in the way the chapter is written- as two tall, unstable towers, easily toppled by the united nation of Israel.

The Midrash understands the endless city-states of Canaan as embassies. This extensive list is divided into two categories: First, those kings whose territories were “East of the Jordan … These were vanquished by Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the Israelites; and Moses, the servant of the Lord, assigned that territory as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh” (verses 1-6). And then a second category: “the kings whom Joshua and the Israelites defeated on the west side of the Jordan … which Joshua assigned as a possession to the tribal divisions of Israel” (verse 7).

The Midrash (Tanhuma Re’eh 7) uses this historically specific information to raise a general theological question, which continues to be discussed to our day -- the relation of God to People:

“When the Lord your God has cut down before you the nations that you are about to enter and dispossess, and you have dispossessed them and settled in their land…” (Deuteronomy 12:29). The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Israel: By your lives, I will conduct your wars. But the credit for winning them I will give to you. Come and see -- the actions of the Holy One, blessed be He, are not like the actions of a king of flesh and blood. When a king of flesh and blood goes out to war, his legions go out in front of him. If they are victorious, they come and make a crown and crown him. But the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act like this. But rather when He conducts the war, He gives the crown to Israel, as it is said of God: “He struck down great kings … and slew mighty kings, Sihon, king of the Amorites … Og, king of Bashan” (Psalms 136:17-20). But He gave the crown to Israel, as it is says: “Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the Israelites conquered them” (Joshua 12:6). In the case of Joshua, it is written: “…the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them…” (Joshua 10:11). But then Scripture speaks of “the kings whom Joshua and the Israelites defeated…” (Joshua 12:7).

This succinct midrashic text deals, in effect, with the intersection of two major theological principles. All that happens is ultimately the work of God. This is the fundamental doctrine of Divine Providence, that God oversees what happens to every individual and is responsible for every minute detail of existence. Nevertheless, God holds us individually and collectively responsible for our actions. This is the fundamental doctrine of Reward and Punishment. God holds us personally responsible for our transgressions. But He gives us full credit and rewards us – in this world or in the world to come -- for doing His will.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ps16-crown.png","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":848,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ps16-crown.png","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1060
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ps16-crown.png","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":848,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ps16-crown.png","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1060
Alex Israel teaches Tanakh at the Pardes Institute, Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi and Matan, Jerusalem.
