\u201cJoshua fit the battle of Jericho and the walls came tumbling down\u2026<\/span><\/a>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The story of the conquest of Jericho is one of the Bible stories that is famous beyond Judaism, including a popular Christian hymn describing the heroic battle (performed by Elvis in the linked clip). The story itself is a combination of a variety of strategies concocted by God and Joshua to announce the Israelite arrival in the land of Canaan in a way that served multiple purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The first was to strike fear in the hearts and minds of the local population. Jericho was known as a city with impenetrable walls. The city was slammed shut with the Israelites approaching. No one could enter. The \u2018shock and awe\u2019 strategy was achieved in three parts. The first was the ceremonial encircling of the city accompanied by the shofar blowing and ending with the battle cry of the people. The second was the miraculous deconstruction of the indestructible walls. The third was the massacre of the entire population of the town. This combination of miraculous intervention and brute strength sent shockwaves through the land and proclaimed Joshua as a tenacious leader. The importance of these three military notes is emphasized by their repetition in the chapter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But it was not all about destruction and death. The chapter also repeats another story- the rescue of Rahab and her family. God instructs the people to save Rahab, Joshua tells the two spies to save her, they save her, and then she is noted again in the summary. Helping Rahab and keeping the promise made to her also sends a message. The message is that those who assist with the conquest will be rewarded and saved, as opposed to those who stand in the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The chapter also has a message for the Israelites. God will assist them in their conquest, but they must follow God\u2019s instructions carefully. Circling the city both scares the local population, but also tests the discipline of the people. God\u2019s commandment to keep the spoils holy is another test (that the people fail in the next chapter). These three messages provide the basis for the story of Jericho leading off the conquest of the land. The power of God, the loyalty of God\u2019s servants, and the promises kept are also why this story has resonated beyond its initial audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The late great Irish poet John O\u2019Donohue wrote at length about the idea of beauty, contrasting it with glamour or attractiveness. Amongst his ideal expressions of beauty is music. Music, he wrote \u201cwould remain our incredible gift to creation. For there is no other sound on earth to compare with the beauty and depth of music.\u201d In an interview with Krista Tippet, O\u2019Donohue said \u201cmusic is what language would love to be, if it could.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So why is there so much music in our chapter?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A chapter that sees a great structure fall, and the killing every man woman and child in Jericho, other than Rahab\u2019s family, is complicated by the sounds of the shofar. \u00a0Yes, the shofar was used in the desert to organize the camp to war, and later to warn people of impending danger. In our tale, the shofar is sounded to announce the arrival of God and the Israelites in Canaan, just as the shofar was blasted at coronations of our ancient kings, and still today on Rosh Hashanah when we \u201ccoronate\u201d God as our king. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

But at its core the shofar is a musical instrument. It was sounded on holidays, and to mark the jubilee, often accompanied by other instruments. It is the first instrument mentioned in Psalm 150 \u201cpraise him with the blast of the horn, praise him with the harp and lyre.\u201d This instrument in our chapter is not bringing joy, and certainly not beauty, but rather the all-powerful God and the scourge of war to our enemies.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why is music the instrument that brings down walls, allowing for the extermination of every living thing in the city? Many of the narratives in the book of Joshua, a book that is so challenging 3,000+ years later, raise difficult questions, and I don\u2019t have good answers. I do know that life is messy; that life and death, kindness and cruelty, beauty and repulsiveness are too often mixed up together. Sometimes they are so tightly coiled that it is hard to discern if an act is kindness or cruelty. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jericho\u2019s shofar blasting begins the conquest of Canaan, and with it the fulfillment of God\u2019s promise to the patriarchs, but tragically that conquest is intertwined with the unspeakable horrors of war. <\/span>

\u00a0<\/span>Everyone knows the story of the fall of Jericho. Children\u2019s Bibles contain charming pictures of the priests and ancient Israelites circling the city, blowing horns and shofars, preparing for the grand drama at the end of the seven day cycle: the walls come tumbling down. Of course, those charming portraits don\u2019t also show the massacred men, women, and children, the slaughtered livestock, or the destroyed buildings. Jericho\u2019s legendary destruction gets scrubbed til it\u2019s squeaky clean.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But there is no escaping the uneasy feeling that this conquest, like all conquests, is bloody, producing victims, death, and devastation. In such a gruesome tale, we seek sparks of light, openings of love and transformation that can at least pierce the violence and horror, offering us a way forward.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One such tale emerges in the subsequent understanding of the harlot, Rahab. She was the one who sided with the Israelite spies against the corruption and cruelty of the Jericho elites. Offering the Israelites shelter and then distraction when they fled away, Rahab is rewarded with the gift of survival, for her and her family.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But apparently that kind of minimalist quid pro quo isn\u2019t enough for Judaism\u2019s ancient rabbis. They read into the Hebrew words, \u201cJoshua allowed her to live, <\/span>hech\u2019yeh Yehoshua<\/span><\/em> \u00a0<\/em>(Joshua 6:25)\u201d that he caused her to truly live: not only did he allow her to survive biologically, but he did what it took to let her thrive spiritually. Her accepted her as a convert to Judaism, and then he married her (Megillah 14b)!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Imagine the impact of the great conqueror of Canaan, the mighty warrior who supervised the slaughter of Canaanite overlords and tyrants, who reaches out to convert and marry one of the lowly Canaanite whores. Isn\u2019t that a powerful stand against a racist condemnation of Canaanites as a group? It may be that the dominant values of Canaanite culture are to be rejected, but the people themselves, well, they are just like us, capable of transformation and embrace.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

By converting and marrying Rahab, Joshua shows that Judaism at its best isn\u2019t about blood, tribal chauvinism, or racial bigotry. Standing for the illuminating values of Torah, best exemplified in the liberation of former slaves and a commitment to equal law for the citizen and the resident alien alike, Joshua knows that showing is better than preaching. So he elevates one of the most marginal and disdained members of Canaanite culture; he welcomes her into our people, his family, and his marital bed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

That is radical welcome, don\u2019t you think?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One of the most striking features of the narrative of the fall of the walls and city of Jericho is the prominence of the number seven. Seven priests hold seven horns (verses 4, 6, 8, 13) while circling the city on seven consecutive days, completing seven circuits on the seventh day (15). Traditionally, the number seven, being the number of days in a week, symbolizes the natural order, while eight, being in excess of seven, symbolizes something supernatural. (Hence, circumcision, which is clearly meant to supersede the natural order, takes place on the eighth day.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

That being the case, we might have expected the fall of Jericho to have been subject to the rule of eights since, presumably, it was miraculous. The prominence of seven, however, seems to indicate the opposite; from the perspective of the Book of Joshua it was accomplished within the natural order.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The ten plagues, the crossing of the Red Sea, the manna and quail in the wilderness, were all divine gifts that were bestowed upon a passive Israel as epitomized by the verse \u201cThe Lord will fight on your behalf while you remain silent\u201d (Exodus 14:14). With the crossing of the Jordan and the entry into the Land of Israel, however, the people were now being actively entrusted with their own fate. In our comments on Chapter Three, we observed that unlike the Red Sea that split when Moses merely waved his staff over it, the priests bearing the Ark had to immerse their feet in the Jordan before it stopped flowing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Now, as Israel approached its first military target, this new expectation continued. For six days, only the priests and the Ark participated. On the seventh day, the whole nation got involved. Of course their shouting and horn blowing was insufficient, in itself, to cause the wall to fall down flat (verse 20); but, on the other hand, it appears that without their contribution God would not have done it alone. They were being trained to take responsibility for their national destiny.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our chapter tells of the miraculous conquest of Jericho by Joshua and the Israelite forces. At the command of Joshua: \u201cSo the people shouted when the horns were sounded. When the people heard the sound of the horns, the people raised a mighty shout and the wall collapsed. The people rushed into the city, every man straight in front of him, and they captured the city\u201d (Joshua 6:20). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

One source (cited by Ginzberg, Legends of the Jews, \u201c[Joshua\u2019s] War with the Armenians\u201d), tells that Joshua was of impressive stature, standing five cubits (roughly seven and a half feet) tall, in his royal apparel, with his crown on which was engraved the ineffable Name of God. Another remarkable midrashic tradition, found in a somewhat questionable source, describes Joshua at the time of his greatest triumph. This is recorded among a series of strange questions, in an early medieval work known as the Alpha-Beta of Ben Sira, that Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon in the 12<\/span>th<\/span> century BCE, is said to have asked Ben Sira who lived in the 2<\/span>nd<\/span> century BCE. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Clearly, we are dealing here with a pseudepigraphical work, intended perhaps for entertainment purposes rather than historical reportage: Nebuchadnezzar asked Ben Sira: \u201cWhy does the bull not have hair on its snout? Ben Sira told the King: Because when the Children of Israel and Joshua were going around Jericho, Joshua was very heavy [Hebrew: \u201cbari\u2019\u201d, which normally means \u201chealthy\u201d]. They first brought him a donkey to ride on, but it collapsed under him. Then they brought him a horse and it too collapsed under him. Every other beast that was brought for Joshua to ride on also collapsed under Joshua\u2019s excessive weight. Finally, they brought him a bull, on which he was able to ride around Jericho, until its walls fell down. \u00a0When Joshua saw that the bull was able to bear his great weight, he raised the head of that bull and kissed it under its snout. And in that place no hair ever grew, neither for that bull nor for any of its descendants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Until recent times, there have been those who claimed that a limited level of obesity, which does not produce metabolic complications, might be considered \u201chealthy\u201d. This view has now been largely disputed. So, Joshua\u2019s excessive weight, termed \u201chealthy\u201d (bari\u2019) in our midrashic tradition, would not be considered healthy in our day. But still the bull continues to benefit from Joshua\u2019s gratitude for its being able to bear his legendary obesity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One of the most remarkable feature of the encirclement of Jericho concerns the repeating motif of the number seven: seven priests, seven rams\u2019 horns, seven days of circling the city, and the culminating act of circling seven times on the seventh day as the walls come tumbling down. The \u201cseven\u201d theme is found elsewhere, typically in the case of hallowed times. Thus, the weekly Sabbath (mirrored perhaps in the seven-branched Menora of the Tabernacle and Temple \u2014 see Ex. 25:31) is celebrated on the seventh day, the national holidays of Passover in the spring and Sukkot in the fall (separated by exactly seven months) are of seven days\u2019 duration, and seven weeks link the observance of Passover to the celebration of Shavuot.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The motif of seven also recalls the agricultural calendar that is spelled out in Leviticus 25:1-24, in which six years of planting and harvesting are followed by a seventh year of release. Seven such cycles constituting forty-nine years are followed by the remarkable year of the Jubilee, during which all ancestral lands excepting those of walled cities revert to their original owners and all bonded servants are set free to return to their homes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In all of the above cases, the number seven constitutes a complete cycle whose progress must be directed towards God. The motif of seven in our context affirms to the Israelites that victory is God\u2019s alone, for they will prevail not by force but rather by His decree. Although Joshua and his army are enjoined to exercise autonomy, to employ military strategy, to carefully plan, and to cautiously execute their plans, the day, in the end, will be won by God\u2019s intervention. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

By indicating that the victory over Jericho is God\u2019s alone, the army of Israel comes to appreciate that their campaign must be waged for more noble causes than power and plunder, the twin pillars of \u201cjustified\u201d warfare in the ancient world. No wonder that in this paradigmatic battle against the Canaanites, Joshua vigorously pronounces an otherwise inexplicable ban against their bodies and possessions. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

The people of Israel are to take no booty from the spoils of Jericho, no human slaves to do their bidding, no precious possessions to fill their coffers, no material souvenirs of their crushing victory. Instead, all proceeds of the enemy are to be consecrated to God and to His Tabernacle. <\/span><\/p>\r\n
