These references show both contrasts and connections between the well-known stories in the Torah, and the current ones being played out. Three examples in Chapter 2:

The chapter begins with Joshua sending two spies to Jericho. It is no coincidence that Joshua’s first act as leader of the people is sending two spies. Joshua was one of the original 12 spies sent to the land of Canaan in Numbers. This time, Joshua himself orders the spies be sent. In the Torah, it seems as if the people had made the request and God and/or Moses reluctantly agreed. Joshua also makes sure to send only two spies for a very specific mission in one location. Perhaps this is an indication that the original spies with their grandiose mission were doomed from the onset. The success of this mission is also an indication that Joshua is trying to right the wrongs of the past. He may also realize that the people will be calmer with a successful mission.

The two spies encounter Rahab, an innkeeper/prostitute. She hides them on her roof when the king of Jericho comes looking for them. This story evokes the story of the two angels who came to visit Lot in Genesis. In that story, Lot tries to confront the angry mob by offering his own daughters to save the guests. In the end, the two angels must save Lot and his family- telling them to flee to the mountainside while Sodom is destroyed. Here, Rahab is the one who saves the two visitors. She artfully distracts the local guard and tells the two men to run to the hills to safety. Rahab takes the place of the angels in this flipped story. Perhaps the message here is that in the books of the Prophets, God does not always act in an outward manner. Help may not come from obvious angels, but from the most unlikely places.

Rahab also tells the spies that she believes in God because she has heard all about the wonders God performed on behalf of the Israelites including “For we have heard how the Lord dried up the waters of the Sea of Suf before you, when you came out of Miżrayim” (verse 10). This recalls another foreigner who favored the Israelites because of what he heard about Egypt: “Jethro priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel, God’s people, how God had brought Israel out from Egypt” (Exodus 18:1). The text specifically links Rahab to Yitro to signal that she is a true believer in God and is to be trusted.

These three examples show that the books of the Prophets are carefully written with the previous books of the Torah in mind as a way to convey a deeper message or suggest a specific feeling about a character.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/isam24-Intertextuality.jpg","1536x1536-width":695,"1536x1536-height":526,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/isam24-Intertextuality.jpg","2048x2048-width":695,"2048x2048-height":526
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/isam24-Intertextuality.jpg","1536x1536-width":695,"1536x1536-height":526,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/isam24-Intertextuality.jpg","2048x2048-width":695,"2048x2048-height":526
Who Was Rahab? Joshua is sending spies to check out the land? This doesn’t sound right…isn’t this the same Joshua who went in with the spies in Deuteronomy, which resulted in a monumental calamity for the Israelites? Doesn’t he remember? Doesn’t he know the risks? How could he send spies again?!

However, a careful reading of the two stories in Tanach will notice some major differences. First the number: Moses sent 12 spies to scout out the land of Canaan. Joshua sends 2. Then there's the nature of these spies: Moses sent in the heads of tribes. Joshua simply sent spies. We have no idea of their status.

And there’s one glaring difference staring the reader in the face. The text uses an odd word to describe the spies being sent: cheresh. The meaning of this word in this verse is hard to understand. The word literally means deaf (or silent). Are we to understand that Joshua sent deaf spies? Rashi tries to understand this word and comes up with two possible readings:

He sent spies in and told them to act deaf. If people thought they were deaf, they would be more free to share information around them that they otherwise would keep secret.

He sent them in the guise of pottery sellers (playing on the similarity between the words Cheresh – deaf, and Cheres – pottery). If they came as peddlers, no one would assume their presence in Canaan was odd.

All of these differences in the mission are trying to tell us something very important. Of course Joshua was aware of the last time spies were sent to check out of the land of Israel – he was there, how could he forget! And of course he knew all the risks associated with it.

But this didn’t stop Joshua. Joshua specifically looked back on his past for guidance, but didn’t stop there. He took what worked, took the positive messages of his past, and he innovated. He changed the mission in ways that he believed could make it successful this time. He isolated the problems in the previous mission and made the appropriate changes.

Joshua’s sending spies, and really, the entire book of Joshua is teaching the reader an important lesson about how we are to relate to a troubled past. Joshua is clear – the past cannot be swept away and forgotten about entirely. We need to take a look at the past, and use it as a building block for our future, to be able to appreciate how the past has shaped our present, and be open to growing and changing because of it.

Joshua sent spies, and this time it was successful. He looked back at his past and grew with the lessons it taught him. In life, we should always strive to do the same.

Image: Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Escape from Rahab's House, as in Joshua 2, Woodcut for "Die Bibel in Bildern", 1860 / wikimedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo2-spies-Schnorr_von_Carolsfeld.png","1536x1536-width":746,"1536x1536-height":599,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo2-spies-Schnorr_von_Carolsfeld.png","2048x2048-width":746,"2048x2048-height":599
Spies? However, Rahab is told by the king of Jericho to bring forth Joshua’s spies, who have been discovered in “searching out all the land”. Courageously, Rahab hides the two spies on her roof and sends the king’s men on a wild-goose chase, telling them that the Israelite spies had already left the city after dark. Rahab explains her dangerous decision not to expose the spies: “I know the Lord has given you the land…For the Lord, your God, is He who is God in Heaven above and on earth beneath” (verses 9-11).

Rahab and the spies make a pact that in return for her help, she and her family will be dealt with kindly when the Israelites conquer Jericho (verses 12-14). Having engaged in prostitution for many years, at the age of fifty, Rahab converts to Judaism. Perhaps it is in consideration of this particular difference that the Torah defines the earlier mission as “scouting” (latur et ha`aretz) while Joshua’s agents are clearly designated “spies” (meraglim).

Regarding the intelligence gathered, there is a remarkable agreement between the information conveyed to the spies by Rahab and an implicit assumption made earlier in the Torah. Rahab hangs a red string from her window, she and her family would remain safe from the imminent Israelite invasion; if she does not, she forfeits the promise of protection. This sign bears clear echoes of the Biblical past—the sacrificial blood on the Israelite doorposts that drew God’s protection from the Plague of the Firstborn in Exodus 12, the red string around the wrist of Zerah that signaled his emergence from his mother Tamar’s womb in Genesis 38—and its echoes also continue to reverberate in modern history.

The anthropologist Elly Teman explored the role of the Rahab story in the popular mystical tradition of wearing a red string around one’s wrist as protection from the Evil Eye.

Perhaps more surprisingly, Rahab’s red string has even made an appearance in the political history of the United States. As documented by historian William R. Trotter, during the Civil War, a secret organization of abolitionist Quakers known as “the Red String Society” operated in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. They sought to sabotage the Confederate war effort by facilitating desertion among Confederate soldiers. Their goal was to bring about the ultimate end of the evil practice of American slavery.

Because the Red Strings committed treason against their erstwhile government, they took great pains to preserve secrecy. Each reportedly wore a red string on his or her lapel, a sign recognizable only to fellow saboteurs. The symbolism was unmistakable: The Union Army, by acting against the forces of enslavement, played the role of Joshua’s army carrying out the will of God. The Red Strings expected and hoped that the forces of the Union would win the war and destroy their irredeemably corrupt Southern society. The Red Strings therefore played the role of Rahab, doing their part to assist the sacred war effort and bring down the Jericho Confederacy. The red strings they wore served as a sign not only to one another but also to God above, seeking His recognition and protection from the approaching onslaught.

<span
