Chapters 3 and 4 comprise one long story detailing the crossing of the Jordan river. The story parallels the story of the Israelites crossing the Sea of Reeds. This time, however, instead of two walls of water, the Jordan only halts on one side. Joshua introduces the crossing in similar fashion to Moses, namely, that the splitting will show that God will lead the people to victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cBy this,\u201d Joshua continued, \u201cyou shall know that a living God is among you, and that He will dispossess for you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites (verse 10);\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Moses said to the people: Do not be afraid! Stand fast and see <\/span>God\u2019s<\/span> deliverance<\/span>,<\/span> which he will work for you today, for as you see Egypt today, you will never see it again for the ages! God will do battle for you, and you\u2014be still\u201d (Exodus 14:13).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Instead of Moses raising his staff above the water, this time the waters split by the touch of the feet of the priests carrying the Ark. It is this last part that seems to be emphasized the most in the chapter. The phrase \u201cthe priests who bear the Ark of the Lord\u201d appears six times in this chapter. Why would the text need to repeat this phrase so often? After the first time, the text could have simply said the priests or the Ark.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The answer may have to do with the last difference between the two stories. Moses was from the tribe of Levi and his brother Aaron was a priest. Joshua is from the tribe of Ephraim. Throughout much of the Torah, following the sin of the Golden Calf, the tribe of Levi and the priests play an outsized role in the text. But now their leadership role takes a back seat to Joshua, and eventually many other leaders and judges who are not from the tribe of Levi. The tribe of Levi will also not play an obvious role in the conquest of the land. The emphasis here on the connection between the priests and the Ark is a reminder of the role that the priests will play in this next phase of the Israelite story. It may not be in the forefront as it was in the Torah, but the tribe of Levi and the priests are intrinsically linked to God and act as protectors of the literal Ark as well as the spiritual Ark in the new land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Joshua 2:1, we read that \u201cJoshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men as spies from Shitim\u201d in order to collect intelligence about the land of Israel. The text does not mention how these men were able to cross the Jordan River. This unexciting description of the spies\u2019 travels from one side of the Jordan to the other is just a single word, <\/span>vayelchu<\/span><\/i>, \u201cthey went.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This brief description of the spies\u2019 journey in Joshua 2 stands in contrast to the dramatic crossing of the Jordan river by the people of Israel in Joshua 3. Almost an entire chapter is devoted to this second crossing. Joshua 3 explains in tremendous detail the many steps it took to cross the river. First, the people of Israel encamped next to the Jordan river for three days. Then, they were given elaborate directions for following the ark of the covenant. Next, they were instructed to make themselves holy so that they would be ready for the wondrous feats that would happen the following day. God assures Joshua that the miracles that will transpire will demonstrate to the people of Israel that God supports Joshua as their leader, just as God supported Moses before him. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Finally, Joshua predicts that as soon as the soles of the priests\u2019 feet will enter the water, the river will split, so the people of Israel can cross on dry land. After all this preparation and fanfare, they do. The text even tells us the following spectacular detail: \u201c<\/span>While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the <\/span>Lord<\/span> stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan\u201d (Joshua 3:17).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why is there such a discrepancy between the one-word first crossing of the river in Joshua 2, and the chapter-long second crossing of the river in Joshua 3?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One answer is practical. Perhaps the spies crossed the river at the end of the summer, when the waters were low and the river was easier to cross. By the time the Israelites were ready to cross as a nation, it might have already been winter, when the river was high and they couldn\u2019t cross easily without divine intervention. Likewise, it\u2019s a lot easier for two people to cross the river undercover, than it is for an entire nation to march through, and so the nation\u2019s crossing was a bigger feat. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Theologically, the miracle of crossing perhaps wasn\u2019t a practical necessity, but a way of demonstrating to the people God\u2019s power and reassuring them that God would assist them. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Or literarily: the nation\u2019s crossing of the Jordan into the land of Canaan mirrors the nation\u2019s crossing of the Red Sea out of the land of Egypt. This crossing of a river marks the ending of a journey that began with a crossing forty years earlier. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is a nice way to conclude a miraculous story with a miraculous ending. \u00a0<\/span>

Joshua\u2019s crossing of the Jordan recalls Moses\u2019s crossing of the Red Sea in some respects and differs from it in others.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In both cases, the ordinary course of the water was interrupted to provide the opportunity to cross on dry land. A \u201cferocious easterly wind\u201d that blew at the Red Sea all night (Exodus 14:21) caused \u201cthe flow to stand as still as a column\u201d (<\/span>ned<\/span><\/i>), and the Jordan\u2019s waters, too, \u201cstood as still as a column\u201d (<\/span>ned<\/span><\/i>) (3:16).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The interruptions, however, were initiated in dissimilar manners. While Moses (simply?) raised his arm and waved his staff, Joshua was instructed to send the priests bearing the Ark out into the Jordan. Only when \u201c[their] feet are immersed in the water\u201d (verse 15) at the eastern bank of the river, did the waters stand still.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This distinction is somewhat reminiscent of a Midrash that credits Nahshon ben Aminadav with effecting the crossing of the Red Sea by being the first (and only?) person willing to risk entering it on the sole strength of God\u2019s assurance that it would split. Here, too, the priests had to immerse their own feet in the Jordan as a sign of their commitment to act solely on the strength of God\u2019s command.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And as the staff was to Moses a tangible reminder that he acted at God\u2019s behest, so had the Ark become, to the priests, the symbol of their dedication.<\/span>

A human life is often defined by its transitions. \u00a0The experiences of growing up, changing schools or jobs, and finding a partner are some of them. Sometimes these transitions are more dramatic, like joining a people or coming out of the closet. In each case, however, we must consider how we will approach our transitions, how we will enact them, how we are changed by them, and what we carry with us from them. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

So, too, is the transition of the Israelites from wandering in the desert to dwelling in their homeland. When arriving at the Jordan, the camp of Israel stops overnight, as if savoring the imminent crossing and preparing for it. \u00a0With some instructions and collaboration, Joshua leads the people to split the Jordan, and to cross it together into the Land. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joshua and the Israelites have to take something with them from their crossing, though. One person from each tribe carries a stone from the bed of the Jordan into the Land with them, with which they will build a monument. In other words, they were not allowed to merely cross the threshold without looking back. Something of that liminal space needed to be with them as they entered their new reality. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is similar to transitions in our own lives. No one merely crosses the threshold from one state of being into another. Something about that crossing\u2014an emotion, a memory, or perhaps even something physical\u2014remains with us even after we cross, to remind us of where we have come from as we move toward where we are going. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is not enough to get through a moment of transition. Our Chapter tells of the crossing of the Jordan River into the Promised Land. This momentous event is depicted in miraculous terms:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When the people set out from their encampment to cross the Jordan, the priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant were at the head of the people \u2026 as soon as the bearers of the Ark reached the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the Ark dipped into the water at its edge, the waters coming down from upstream piled up in a single heap a great way off \u2026 So, the people crossed near Jericho. The priests who bore the Ark of the Lord\u2019s Covenant stood on dry land exactly in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel crossed over on dry land, until the entire nation had finished crossing the Jordan\u201d (3:14-17, compare Ex. 14:29). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

The rabbinic sages elaborated on this wondrous episode by adding miracle upon miracle: When Joshua said to people crossing the Jordan, \u201cCome closer and listen to the words of the Lord your God. By this you shall know that a living God is among you\u201d (Joshua 3:9), miraculously all the Israelite myriads were able to assemble together in the small space between the staves by which the priests carried the Ark of the Covenant (Genesis Rabbah 5:7).This was a sign that in the future, in the Temple in Jerusalem, there would miraculously be ample room for all the thousands of assembled people to stand and even prostrate themselves (Mishnah Avot 5:5 and parallels). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

A Talmudic tradition (Sotah 34a) interprets the biblical description of the waters of the Jordan \u201cpiled up in a single heap a great way\u201d to mean that the waters were heaped up to a height of more than three hundred miles! This cast terror in the hearts of the kings of the East and the West, as it says: \u201cWhen all the kings of the Amorites on the western side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites near the Sea, heard how the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the sake of the Israelites until they crossed over, they lost heart, and no spirit was left in them because of the Israelites\u201d (Joshua 5:1). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Regrettably, the waters of the Jordan are again being dried up, much to the dismay of many in Israel and its neighbors. Ninety-six percent of the Jordan\u2019s once impressive flow has been diverted for domestic and agricultural use. In places, the Jordan sometimes may seem a mere polluted trickle compared to what it was from biblical times until only fifty years ago. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Let us hope that Ezekiel\u2019s vision (47:7-12) will yet be realized: \u201cI saw trees in great profusion \u2026 where the river flows everything will live \u2026 fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river \u2026 because its waters go forth from the Temple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After nearly forty long years it is finally time for the people to cross the Jordan. Joshua reveals that the people will follow the priests and ark, but they must do so at 2,000 cubits, \u201csince it is a road that you have never travelled before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Despite the many hesitations of entering Canaan in the past, the Israelites blindly follow the ark, trusting that God knows what best and most suitable road for them is to travel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Blindly following is something that we are all doing at an alarming rate today, often without even knowing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Nearly every day we are \u2018crossing the Jordan\u201d into unknown territory. Bill Gates extolls the virtues and potential of robot dexterity. Researchers are employing AI, and robots are mastering the necessary dexterity to perform everyday tasks. But as some have claimed regarding some of Boston Dynamics robots-are we engineering our robot overlords?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Billions of people have embraced social media, but then the technology that was transforming the world into a closer and kinder place by connecting people from different walks of life has seemingly transformed into a behemoth that erodes privacy, allows bots to harass activists, attack journalists, and spread terrible misinformation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It certainly appears that we are in the early stages of the current technological revolutions. The world wide web just celebrated its 30<\/span>th<\/span> birthday last month, not even a Biblical generation, and hopefully in time most of the detrimental aspects of this new medium will subside or be eliminated, but until then perhaps we should listen to the age-old wisdom of our chapter-\u201ckeep a distance of 2,000 cubits,\u201d that is to say: Tread cautiously, futurists, before all of us dive headfirst into a rabbit hole that we can\u2019t get out of. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles.<\/em> The main goal of a miracle is - the miracle: \u201ctomorrow the LORD will perform wonders in your midst\u201d (verse 5), and the strengthening of faith for things to come, \u201cBy this,\u201d Joshua continued, \u201cyou shall know that a living God is among you, and that He will dispossess for you the [land]\u201d (verse 10). It also strengthens Joshua\u2019s standing: \u201cso that they shall know that I [God] will be with you as I was with Moses\u201d (verse 7), and the overall way, overcoming the crossing of the Jordan, \u201cNow the Jordan keeps flowing over its entire bed throughout the harvest season\u201d (verse 15). It is after all, a river - as we saw in the story of the spies in the previous chapter - with natural crossing spots.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Closing the loop<\/em>. The miracle of the crossing of the Sea began the journey. The miracle of the stopping of the waters of the Jordan, closes it, and begins a new chapter in the history of Israel.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Joshua and Moses<\/em>. God\u2019s words to Joshua in verse 7: \u201c\u201cThis day, for the first time, I will exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they shall know that I will be with you as I was with Moses,\u201d remind us that the Splitting of the Sea, 40 years and 126 chapters ago (Ex. 14) also was not just a technical solution to a physical impediment, but also a lesson in faith in God and Moses, \u201cAnd they believed in God and in his servant Moses\u201d (Ex. 14:31).<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>","post_main_content_image":{"id":86314,"alt":"","title":"Points to
