The nasty remark we made to our spouse right after we stopped recording that smiley video of our vacation. All the times we trash-talked our friends behind their backs, or lied to our bosses to cover up our mistakes.

…In some cosmic sense, all of that has been recorded, along with every other moment of our lives over the past year. And the prayers insist that we sit down, watch these tapes, and ask ourselves: What parts do I wish I could edit out? When would I have acted differently if I had known I was being watched? What moments do I never, ever want to repeat?

“This is how God is different from Big Brother, who also knows everything we do and say, but who uses it against us,” explains Rabbi Alan Lew. “God watches the whole video with a boundless, heartbreaking compassion.”

What would it feel like to stand before such a God and say, “Yes, I did these things, and yes, I feel awful about that, and I don’t ever want to act this way again.” What would this God say to me? I imagine it might go something like “Dearest, I know. Those things you did are not you. And I feel quite confident of that because I created you, and I am intimately familiar with your pure soul. So really, sweetheart, stop tormenting yourself and just focus on doing whatever reflecting/apologizing/resolving-to-be-better that you need to do to come back to me and return to your pure soul/truest self.”

I imagine that coming before such a God would make it a lot easier for me to confront what’s on those tapes.

Like many other prayers, Unetaneh Tokef includes a number of quotes from the Hebrew Bible—and guess which book it draws most heavily from? Believe it or not, it’s the Book of Job, in which God unfairly punishes a righteous man named Job—an extreme example of bad things happening to good people. When Job confronts God, God basically replies, “You have no idea what it’s like to create and rule the universe, so back off.” Not exactly the biblical book I would advise quoting from if you’re trying to promote a clear-cut reward-and-punishment theology.

…We can’t always control what happens to us, but we do have some control over how we react. When bad things happen, we can cultivate a spiritual practice so that we feel less isolated. We can engage in self-reflection, and do teshuvah if necessary, to help us grow. And we can get some perspective by helping others who are worse off. These actions may not change our circumstances, but they may change us, giving us what we need to cope and even thrive.

Excerpt from Sarah Hurwitz, Here All Along: Finding Meaning, On the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe, we can almost feel God’s presence and sense His closeness. For although we know that God is always close to us, we do not always feel close to Him. He is always to be found, but we do not always seek Him out. The atmosphere in the synagogue is intense and serious. Yet this year, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, many of us will be prevented from experiencing this intensity. The challenge will be finding the spiritual energy to replicate this atmosphere in our own homes.

On Rosh Hashanah God judges the whole world and decides on their fate for the coming year. It is as if the world has become a courtroom. God Himself is the Judge. The shofar announces that the court is in session, and we are on trial, giving an account of our lives. If taken seriously, this is a potentially life-changing experience. It forces us to ask the most fateful questions we will ever ask:• Who am I?
• Why am I here?
• How shall I live?
• How have I lived until now?
• How have I used God’s greatest gift: time?
• Whom have I wronged, and how can I put it right?
• Where have I failed, and how shall I overcome my failures?
• What is broken in my life and needs mending?
• What chapter will I write in the Book of Life?

These are days of reflection and introspection when we stand in the presence of God and acknowledge how short and vulnerable life really is, and how little time we have here on earth.

There is no time to waste to become the very best people we can be!

Download the Family Edition for Rosh Hashanah Thoughts as a PDF

ps150-hillel smith - This makes sense. The people are about to enter a land filled with local idol-worshiping nations. Also, unlike in the wilderness, the Israelites are not passing through; the “influencers” are there to stay. But outside influence is not the only potential touchpoint. Chapter 13 details three other possible problem points; the false prophet, the family member, and the wayward city. Each one of these represents a different type of internal negative influence.

The false prophet is the stranger Israelite. This is someone who is part of the Israelite nation, but not the immediate city or relative of the individual. Because they are not part of the community, they must work a little harder to influence the people. They do this by performing signs and wonders. The text seems to indicate that these signs are real, and that they are a test from God. The people should know this is a false prophet because of the message. God will never send a prophet to tell the people to worship idols.

The next level jumps inward to a family member. The family member does not need signs and wonders because they have the trust built-in as a member of the family. The Torah lists brother, offspring, wife or even closest friend. All are very close to the individual.

The next level is a city. It takes a village to raise someone, and the Torah warns that it could take a village to corrupt someone. Here, the influence of the city comes from peer pressure. This is the third type of influence that Torah warns about. The first two must be stoned; a public punishment that is also interactive. The people who were meant to be influenced help rid the world of the influencer. The wayward city is treated like an enemy town. The entire city must be wiped out, its people killed and the city burned. Certainly this action takes more than just a court and the individuals targeted. The strength of peer pressure can only be defeated by a more powerful group. This is why the city's downfall must come at the hands of the nation as a whole.

-632da29d8b572--632da29d8b573deut13-domino So, it is fitting that, in our chapter, Moses should detail how to identify and deal with any false prophet. “If there appears among you a prophet or a dream-diviner and he gives you a sign or a wonder, saying, ‘Let us follow and worship another god’ —whom you have not experienced—even if the sign or portent that he named to you comes true, do not heed the words of that prophet or that dream-diviner. According to the Talmud Yerushalmi (Berakhot 9a), a rabbinic sage would have more authority than even a true biblical prophet. This is illustrated with a parable of a king who sent two imperial agents to a city. One was only to be accepted as the king’s authentic representative upon showing that he bore the king’s seal and signet. But the other agent was to be accepted without showing any such signs of having a royal commission. Similarly, the prophet must show a “sign or wonder” (13:2). But the Rabbinic Sages required no such proof of their authority, other than the midrashic application to them of the verse: “You shall act in accordance with the instructions given you and the ruling handed down to you. You must not deviate from the judgement that they announce to you either to the right or to the left” (Deuteronomy 17:11).

The Babylonian Talmud (Baba Batra’ 12a) records this ascendency of the sages over the prophets in the pithy statement: “A [rabbinic] sage is preferable to a [biblical] prophet (hakham 'adif mi-navi’)”.

In our day, there are those who, like the biblical prophets, claim to speak for God. To whom should we listen and from whom should we learn to become as knowledgeable and understanding as possible? that we have free will and agency to decide which path we will go on. The portion opens with the verse, “See, this day I set before you blessing and curse: blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I enjoin upon you this day; and curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn away from the path that I enjoin upon you this day and follow other gods, whom you have not experienced” (Deut. 11:26-28).

The Talmud in Sotah 37b teaches on these lines, “And furthermore, the verse comes to juxtapose the blessing with the curse,” both are in the world. The importance then is the “reiya” the perception. This passage in Sotah states that the blessings and curses in the portion of Re’eh are connected with the two mountains Gerizim and Eval mentioned in Deuteronomy 27:12-13 as places where the blessings and curses are recited for the people.

A comment by 19th century German rabbi and scholar Samson Raphael Hirsch on these verses that my spouse, Rabbi Jonathan Perlman directed me to, illustrates this concept. Hirsch says about blessings and curses and these mountains that “Both of them rise from the same soil, both are watered by the same rain and dew. The same air passes over them both; the same pollen is blown over them both. Yet Mount Eval remains starkly barren, while Gerizim is covered with lush vegetation to its very top. In the same way, blessing and curse are not dependent on external circumstances, but on our inner receptivity to the one or the other, on our attitude toward that which brings blessing.” Hirsch is saying that how we take things in and perceive them, whatever those external circumstances may be, can make the difference in the way in which we experience the world.

This Sabbath, when we read Re’eh, we will also be celebrating the new month of Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah. We have choices in how to use our time this month, to ready ourselves with patterns we hope to follow over the course of the entire new year. Let us use this time to foster attitudes within ourselves and those in our communities, that will bring us blessings and not Written as an accompaniment to Rabbi Sacks’ weekly Covenant & Conversation essay, the Family Edition is aimed at connecting older children and teenagers with his ideas and thoughts on the parsha. Each element of the Family Edition is progressively more advanced; The Core Idea is appropriate for all ages and the final element, From The Thought of Rabbi Sacks, is the most advanced section. Each section includes Questions to Ponder, aimed at encouraging discussion between family members in a way most appropriate to them. We have also included a section called Around the Shabbat Table with a few further questions on the parsha to think about. The final section is an Educational Companion which includes suggested talking points in response to the questions found throughout the Family Edition.
Covenant & Conversation: Family Edition is a new and exciting initiative from The Office of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CCfamilylogo-693x457.jpg","1536x1536-width":693,"1536x1536-height":457,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CCfamilylogo-693x457.jpg","2048x2048-width":693,"2048x2048-height":457
"type_929":"2

Moving on from the general principles of the covenant, Moses now focuses on specific details, and begins with presenting the choice that lies before Bnei Yisrael: blessings if they are faithful to God’s laws, curses if they are not.
