During Moses\u2019s description of the exodus and the miracles of the desert he reminds the people \u201cGod will send the tzir\u2019ah against them, until those who are left in hiding perish before you\u201d (verse 20). What is the tzir\u2019ah? There are two main camps in the commentators as to what this word means. Chizkuni and Ibn Ezra explain that this was a disease similar to tzara\u2019at (often translated as leprosy). The explanation most likely has to do with the similarities of the word. It is also likely that they find it odd that God would introduce something completely new into the picture that does not really appear again. Therefore, it makes sense that this word refers to something already described in the Torah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashi quotes the Talmud in Sotah 36a that the tzir\u2019ah were actually large insects that spit venom at the enemies causing castration and blindness. The insects were not allowed to enter the land, and after vanquishing the kingdom of Og, they spit their venom across the Jordan river at the nations in the land.\u00a0 Bachya explains that the tzir\u2019ah was not some major miraculous venom spitting monster fly. Instead, it refers to simple swarms of hornets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The reason Moses mentions it here is to contrast it with the previous verse, verse 19, which talked about the plagues in Egypt. These two verses describe two different types of miracles. Verse 19, the plagues, described the major environment-bending miracles that show God\u2019s mastery over nature. Verse 20 are simple swarms of hornets that are an everyday occurrence.\u00a0 God simply directed these swarms to target the enemies of Israel. These are the hidden miracles that God performs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As fantastical as this explanation seems, it\u2019s possible this thread is motivated by the phrasing of the verse. God says he \u201cwill send\u201d the tzir\u2019ah using the Hebrew word <\/span>shalach<\/span><\/em>. The same word is used during the ten plagues to describe God sending the plague of <\/span>arov<\/span><\/em> (Exodus 8:17). <\/span>Arov<\/em> <\/span>is usually translated as wild animals, but Rashi is among a group of commentators that translates it as swarms of insects. Therefore, when the Torah uses the same word here as it did there, it must also be referring to some kind of In Deuteronomy 7, we find a rationale for why the Exodus from Egypt has played a central role in Jewish commandments and liturgy. Two verses in this chapter summarize why this seminal event is to be continually commemorated by the Jewish people:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

You have but to bear in mind what your God did to Pharaoh and all the Egyptians. The wondrous acts that you saw with your own eyes, the signs and the portents, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm by which your God liberated you (verses 18-9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

While the Israelites living then were certainly not \u201ceye-witnesses\u201d to God\u2019s miracles in Egypt, the statement in Mishna Pesachim 10:5 should always be kept in mind:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In each and every generation a person must view himself as though he left Egypt, as it is stated: \u201cAnd you shall tell your son on that day, saying: \u201cIt is because of this which the Lord did for me when I came forth out of Egypt\u201d (Exodus 13:8).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

An act of imagination is required of each Jew to transcend their place and time not only on Passover, but throughout the days of the year, and consider seriously, in the words of the Haggada:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And if the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our ancestors from Egypt, behold we and our children and our children's children would (<\/span>still<\/span><\/i>) be enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Nachmanides on Exodus 13:16 summarizes the importance of keeping in mind the Exodus, within the context of the commandment of <\/span>mezuza<\/span><\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2026All these commandments are designed for the purpose that in all generations we should have testimonies to the wonders so that they should not be forgotten\u2026 He who buys a <\/span>mezuza<\/span> <\/em>for one zuz<\/em> and affixes it to his doorpost and has the proper intent of heart on its content, has already admitted 1) the creation of the world, 2) the Creator\u2019s knowledge and 3) His providence, and also 4) his belief in prophecy as well as 5) in all fundamental principles of the Torah, besides 6) admitting that the mercy of the Creator is very great upon them that do His will, since He brought us forth from that bondage to freedom\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n

According to Jeremiah 23:7-8, remembering how God freed the Jews will not be a value in the future or the world-to-come:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Assuredly, a time is coming\u2014declares the LORD\u2014when it shall no more be said, \u201cAs the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>But rather, \u201cAs the LORD lives, who brought out and led the offspring of the House of Israel from the northland and from all the lands to which I have banished them\u2026\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, in the meantime, recalling the Exodus will certainly continue to be of consequence for Jews and Judaism.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cPut them in the right environment,\u201d was the first thing I could think\u00a0of when asked for parenting advice by a father of kids much younger than my own.\u00a0In this week\u2019s portion, Ekev<\/em>, Moses too alludes to the necessity of this.\u00a0This land, he tells the Israelites, \u201cis a land which the Lord your God seeks after it, always the Lord your God keeps his eye upon, from the year\u2019s beginning to the year\u2019s end\u201d (Deut. 11:12).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The very characteristics of this land, the need to pray to God for rain and be dependent upon God\u2019s mercy rather than the constantly flowing streams of the gushing Nile in Egypt, aid in ensuring the obedience of the Israelites, part of the ways that God is educating them continuously.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

We don\u2019t know how these lessons will take effect.\u00a0After all the people have already misbehaved in myriad ways. Moses reminds them in his review of the past of their \"provoking God to anger in the wilderness\u201d (Deut. 9: 7), from the Golden Calf (Deut. 9:16) to the provocations at Taverah (first in Numbers 11:1-3 and reminder in Deut. 9:22), Massa (Exodus 17:1-7 and Deut. 9:22) and Kivrot-hata\u2019avah (Num. 11:4-34 and Deut. 9:22).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

In fact, one of the understandings in the Talmud of the verse \u201cAnd now, Israel what does the Lord your God request of you? Only to fear the Lord your God, to walk only in his paths, to love Him and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and soul\u201d (Deut. 10:12)\u00a0is that \u201call is in the hands of heaven except fear of heaven\u201d (Brachot 33b).\u00a0I believe this is expressing that even when things are foreseen, it is still our choice how we will behave in response; in other words, humans are endowed with free will.\u00a0In a paradox, despite so many aspects of life being beyond our control, what is<\/em> within our abilities is whether to behave with fear of heaven or not.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

None of us know the future or the outcome; in fact, this portion opens with a conditional statement, \u201cIf you do obey these rules and observe them carefully the Lord your God will observe for you the covenant and the kindness that he swore on oath with your ancestors\u201d (Deut 7:12). However, Moses does know something.\u00a0He knows where his words will end up.\u00a0When Moses is reviewing events of the past and discussing\u00a0how he went to fetch the commandments that God wrote \u201call the words that God had spoken to you\u201d (Deut 9: 10), the Talmud says that Moses saw all the inferences that would come of his words, even to the reading of the book of Esther (Megillah 19b).<\/p>\r\n

When Achilles was a baby, he was dipped in the river\u2019s magical, protective water, but while doing so, his mother held him by his heel which was therefore left untouched. Although he survived many wars, one day a poisonous arrow shot at him was lodged in his heel, causing his demise.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We have our own heel stories, when Jacob grabs hold of Esau, trying to catch up with his twin brother, and even earlier when God tells Adam about the animosity between him and the serpent, an animosity which would be expressed in the heel. The heel, <\/span>akev<\/span><\/i>, is \u201cpivotal\u201d. That\u2019s why his relative word <\/span>ekev<\/span><\/i> is often translated as \u201cbecause\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The snake, <\/span>Nachash<\/span><\/i>, on the other hand, shares its root with<\/span> lenachesh<\/span><\/i> \u2013 to guess, also \u2013 to use hidden tricks and magic, that is \u2013to rely on something unstable, \u201cslithering\u201d. The animosity between the snake and our heel can be therefore symbolic of us being hurt in our most vulnerable spot by doubt by something small, slippery, that we can\u2019t quite get our hands on. For example, when hiking, we most often don\u2019t trip because of a huge mountain but because of a small rock on our path. We don\u2019t make a 1000-piece puzzle beautiful because of one big piece in the middle, but because of connecting lots of small pieces. And it\u2019s so aggravating when one is missing, just one small piece!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cDon\u2019t sweat the small stuff and it\u2019s all small stuff\u201d, says a catchy phrase on a magnet in a souvenir shop, but really??<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our life is more often made of little details coming together: this minor decisions, plus that small issue; that turn in the road along with this other incident, which brought us to where we are today. It\u2019s not that I think the Torah advocates for us to be petty; it wants us to be \u201clarge\u201d and have \u201cvision\u201d and see the \u201cbig picture\u201d, but it also wants to remind us to pay attention to the details in our life. Sometimes I yearn for the simple clarity of the life described by the Torah. If you're good, you get rewarded- children, produce, livestock, the works. These are the promises Moses opens chapter 7 with. And if you're bad, you get punished: plagues, wars, exile. It would be so much easier to know if you're on the right path if you could constantly get instant Divine feedback.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But real life doesn't work that way, and the commentators already began to highlight the complexity by reading between the lines. On the phrase \"He repays those who hate Him to his face, to destroy him,\" (\u201cwho instantly requites with destruction those who reject Him\u201d) the Targum explains that God actually gives evil people a good lot in this life, so that they will not have any merits left in the world to come, so that if you look at who's enjoying blessing in this world, you can't know whether it's because they're so good or so bad. On the words 'that I command you <\/span>to do today<\/span>,\" the Gemara explains that 'today' you do them, but only in the unknowable world to come will you receive the reward, so that if you look at who's suffering in this world, you still can't really know anything about their righteousness or sinfulness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But is this situation really more complicated, or is it perhaps simpler? To act with the constant expectation of divine reward or punishment is to be in a child-like state of constantly testing boundaries with God- what will He do now, how will He react to this? This is what the end of chapter 6 refers to when it forbids 'testing' God. It's a tiresome game which is the exact opposite of the command 'be pure\/wholesome (tamim) with Hashem your God' (Deut. 18). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Ramban explains that the word '<\/span>ekev<\/span><\/i>' means twisted, roundabout (a root which gives us the name Ya\u2019akov, Jacob). When a person is constantly looking for explanations, it takes him around and around (<\/span>mi'saviv<\/span><\/i>) to find the reason (<\/span>siba<\/span><\/i>). The opposite of '<\/span>ekev'<\/span><\/i> is <\/span>'yashar'<\/span><\/i>, to be straight with God, not to look for the 'why', but rather to focus on the 'what'. 'Walk before me and be <\/span>tamim<\/span><\/i>', God commands Abraham. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rather than a crooked, convoluted path marked by impossible guesswork of the divine will, God wants us to walk the straight path dictated by our convictions. In one of his concluding addresses in Deuteronomy, Moses said: 'The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples,<\/span> for you are the fewest of all peoples<\/span><\/em>'<\/em> (Deuteronomy 7: 7). The danger in counting Jews is that if they believed, for a moment, that there is strength in numbers, they would long ago have given way to despair. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

How then do you estimate the strength of the Jewish people? To this the Hebrew Bible gives an answer of surpassing beauty. <\/span>Ask Jews to give, and then count their contributions<\/span><\/em>. Numerically, Jewry is small, but in terms of its contributions to civilization, it is vast. Somehow this small people produced an unceasing flow of patriarchs, priests, poets and prophets, masters of halakhah and aggadah, codifiers and commentators, philosophers and mystics, sages and saints. It was not once that the Jewish imagination caught fire, but in century after century, sometimes under the worst persecution known to any nation on earth. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

If you want to know the strength of the Jewish people, ask them to give, and then count the contributions. To win the Jewish battle, the battle of the spirit, the victory of heart, mind and soul, you do not need numbers. You need dedication, commitment, study, prayer, vision, courage, ideals and hope. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

You need to offer people tough challenges through which to grow.<\/span>

He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. In our chapter, Moses instructs the Israelites about what they must do when they finally enter the Promised Land (verses 1-11). At the end of this set of specific instructions, the reward for fulfilling them is stated: \u201cAnd if you obey these rules and observe (u-shmartem<\/em>) them carefully, the Lord, your God, will maintain (ve-shamar<\/em>) for you the covenant and the faithfulness (chesed<\/em>) that He made on oath with your forefathers\u201d (verse 12). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew three-letter verbal root Sh-M-R occurs hundreds of times in the biblical text, requiring different translations into English depending on the specific context of each occurrence. Our verse reflects how this single Hebrew verb can have the meaning of \u201cobservance\u201d by the people of Israel and can also refer to their reward: God\u2019s \u201cmaintaining\u201d the ancestral covenant. The Midrash (Deuteronomy Rabbah 3:4) ponders this dual use of a Hebrew verb by asking: What is implied by saying that God \u201cwill maintain (ve-shamar<\/em>)\u201d for the People of Israel the covenant made with their forefathers? All that Israel enjoys in this world is a result of the blessings with which the wicked Balaam blessed them (see Numbers, Chapters 23-24). But the blessings with which the Patriarchs blessed the People of Israel (see for example, Genesis 12:1-3) are reserved for them in the world to come, as it is said \u201cthe Lord will maintain\u201d the covenant. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Furthermore, to what might the relationship between Israel and God (in Deuteronomy 7:12) be compared? To the relationship between an orphan who was brought up in the house of a certain man who fed and clothed him and taught him a trade so that he would be able to support himself when he reaches adulthood. The orphan expected that the cost of his upbringing would need to be repaid to the man who maintained him as a child. But the man explained: The total cost of your food and clothing have already been well repaid by the service you rendered me in filling the cask of water and chopping the wood when you served as my apprentice. You deserve the full reward for your labors now. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Similarly, whatever pleasures the people of Israel enjoy is a reward for their efforts in this world. But their full reward is stored up and maintained (u-meshumar<\/em>) for them in the world to come, as it is said, \u201cThe Lord, your God, will maintain (ve-shamar<\/em>) for you the covenant and the faithfulness that He made on oath with your fathers\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0In Ekev Moses continues his speech, setting out the principles of the covenant the Israelites made with God, and what it demands of them as a chosen nation in a Promised Land. If they are faithful to the covenant, they will be blessed, both materially and spiritually. But they should not attribute their success solely to themselves or their righteousness. They must never forget that God is helping with every step along the way. Moses reminds them of the people\u2019s sins during the wilderness years, the Golden Calf, the Korach rebellion, and other similar stories. He reminds them, too, of God\u2019s forgiveness. Remembering their history, they must love and respect God and teach their children to do the same. This entire set of beliefs is summarised in the passage that became the second paragraph of the Shema (Devarim 11:13\u201321). Israel\u2019s fate depends on Israel\u2019s faith.<\/p>\r\n

  1. A trap.<\/em> The remnants of previous cultures are a potential hazard - a snare. They are a trap, which they will fall into in the future. See verses 16 and 25.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Don\u2019t let it go to your head.<\/em> The idea of chosenness and also the proscribing of the nations could easily lead to a superiority complex. It was to combat this that the following verses were written. Their central idea is that it\u2019s not you - it\u2019s Him: \u201cIt is not because you are the most numerous of peoples that the LORD set His heart on you and chose you\u2014indeed, you are the smallest of peoples; but it was because the LORD favored you and kept the oath He made to your fathers\u201d (verses 7-8).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. A beautiful blessing<\/em>. In verses 13-15 that is.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Fast or slow.<\/em> How will the conquest take place? In verses 22-24 there is more than one answer.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. The tzir\u2019ah<\/em> (verse 20). <\/em>This traditional supporting role from Ex. 13 is back.
