The first is the delineation of the borders of the land of Israel and the second is the list of the new princes. This chapter follows a simple A\/B\/B\/A structure with the beginning of the book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Numbers began 38 years ago at Mt. Sinai. Following the giving of the Ten Commandments, God tells Moses to appoint 12 princes to lead the people. These 12 princes are listed in chapter 1 of Numbers. Chapter 2 of Numbers described the set up of the camp in the desert. Each of the four sides of the Tabernacle had three tribes. In the middle was the Tabernacle surrounded by the Levites and priests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Chapter 34 discusses the same two ideas but in reverse order. The beginning of chapter 34 discusses the borders of the land of Israel. This matches the encampment structure in chapter 2. The second part of chapter 34 discusses the new princes appointed from the \u201csecond generation.\u201d\u00a0 This part parallels chapter 1\u2019s listing of the princes. Perhaps the Torah uses this same structure to explain that this was a reset of the same time after the giving of the Torah when the sin of the spies was a horrible nightmare in the future and the people were on their way to enter the land. Now, 38 years later, a new generation eagerly awaits their turn to enter the Relationships need them to maintain each person's private, safe space. Movements need them to define who is in and who is out. Countries need safe borders for security and self-definition. In chapter 34, the word used for drawing borders is v<\/em><\/span>ehit'avitem<\/span><\/em>, related to the word <\/span>ta'avah<\/span><\/em>-<\/span><\/i>desire. We yearn for clear borders. <\/span><\/p>\r\n But we Jews are just terrible at setting them. 70 years into statehood, and it's not just that our borders are not internationally recognized- within the citizenry of the state itself the borders are seen radically differently.<\/span><\/p>\r\n What we lack politically, we also lack socially. As any North American oleh<\/em> can tell you, this is a culture with serious boundary issues. Titles and formalities are disposed of. Doctors wear t-shirts, jeans and flip flops. No really doesn't mean no. It means: negotiations begin now. A person can tell you emphatically <\/span>ein davar kazeh<\/span><\/em>, '<\/span><\/i>that's impossible', and, with a little prodding, can make it happen. And you never know when a complete stranger will engage you in a personal conversation about your marital status and that of her daughters on the bus.<\/span><\/p>\r\n But maybe there's something to this. Boundaries and borders tend to depersonalize. By definition, they turn people on the \"outside\" into the \"Other\". By nature, boundaries need to be clearly defined, which can't account for the messy particulars of real life, and therefore, they always lose sight of the full complexity and humanity of the other.<\/span><\/p>\r\n You really feel it at border crossings. Never mind crossings in areas rife with tension and violence. I can feel it in the gaze of the guard when going from Canada to the U.S. What business do you have here? Do you fit in? Do you deserve to enter? Without exception, I always have an experience of becoming alien to myself, second guessing myself, wondering if perhaps I'm smuggling something, or wanted for a crime.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Similarly, discussions of movement boundaries are intensely dehumanizing. They are defined by a politics of exclusion unable to account for complexity, which has to know whether one is in or out, ignoring the thick web of beliefs, practices, associations, decisions and priorities of the individual.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The great challenge is to set boundaries without losing a sense of humanity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The borders described in chapter 34 have a notably human quality to them. \u00a0The journey of the border echoes the Jews' journey- it turns, passes, descends. And then, immediately after so clearly delineating the border, Moses undermines them by mentioning the tribes that have already managed to redefine the borders by virtue of their request. \u00a0Here, Moses does refer to this portion as their <\/span>nachala<\/span><\/em>, their inheritance, granting it full legitimacy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Borders are important, boundaries are valuable, but they're not absolute. They need to be respected, but not worshipped at the expense of the people who are behind them, around them, and especially, outside them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n image:\u00a0Etan Tal - Aeronautical Information Publication - The edges of countries have become central to their identity. Everywhere, tension is spiking in these liminal and threshold spaces that cut to the core of how we think about nationalism, liberal ideals, and global volatility. Where you stand on borders has become a heartland matter of identity. The movement of people now determines the fate of countries and continents; the stateless inflect states. This is nothing new, of course. For most of human history, wars were an affair of borders- where one tribe ended, and the next began. The dissolving of borders meant the end of old empires, and the birth of new ones.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Borders are not only cartographic conventions and the subject of surveyors; they limn what the literary theorist Guy Davenport has called the \u2018Geography of the Imagination.\u2019 Hadrian\u2019s Wall, seamed into the English countryside, not only marked the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. It suggested the outer limit of the Roman imagination. Inside Athens, the agora, the Parthenon, and Socrates asking all the right questions. Outside, barbarians massing and threatening to turn a golden age blood red. America at its most boundless didn\u2019t know where it ended, and that\u2019s how it began to imagine what it might become.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Today\u2019s chapter is a demarcation of borders, a walk-around of where Israel begins and ends. This is the beginning of particularity and specificity, where the Land of Israel becomes a place rather than an act of imagination. There is a thrill to this banality. For a people wandering in undifferentiated space for generations, the horizon blank with sand, what a joy to be told one\u2019s place in the world, the line between yours and not-yours marked clearly. Of course, Israel\u2019s boundaries remain contested, a bit that proves the point; if you want to know where someone stands, see the line they draw. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you shall not cross there\u2019\u201d (Deuteronomy 34:4) \u2026 The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses: Go and say to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: The oath which I [God] swore to you, I have fulfilled for your children. <\/span><\/p>\r\n In having Moses speak to the far earlier Patriarchs, we have here a kind of midrashic \u201ctime-warp\u201d, in line with the Rabbinic exegetical principle that there is \u201cno earlier or later in the Torah\u201d (see Mekhilta de-Rabbi Yishmael, Shirah 7). Indeed, interpreting Moses\u2019 seeing the whole of the Land as his seeing \u201call that had been and all that was to be\u201d (i.e. all of human history) suggests a kind of aggadic \u201cspacetime continuum\u201d (in which the dimensions of space and time are viewed as a continuous entity) associated in modern times with the special relativity theory of the German-Jewish theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. <\/span><\/p>\r\n If, as our midrashic tradition states, Moses was given by God to foresee \u201cevery generation\u201d, then it seems that in our generation, Moses oversees us and our deeds as he did the Israelites of his An array of names, one for each of the new leaders of the tribes, to work with Joshua and Eleazar the Priest in the apportioning of the Land for the Israelite confederation. In a fairly subtle move, the Torah lists the two familiar leaders from the previous generation, but supplements them with all new leaders from the other tribes. The astute reader will note that, as promised, the first generation of wanderers has perished. They will not enter into the Land of Promise. Only those leaders from a new generation, one that never knew slavery, never lived in Egypt, only these are fit to lead the people Israel into their new land, their new future.<\/span><\/p>\r\n But there is another subtle message flowing just under the surface as well. The tribal leaders are listed in the approximate order of their tribes\u2019 placement in the geography of the Land of Israel. Even before entering the land, people are introduced in their proper setting, their proper location. Everybody has their time, the Mishnah teaches, and every thing has its place. In the Torah\u2019s list here, we learn that each person has a place too.<\/span><\/p>\r\n We are all children of the soil, springing from the rich loam of this beautiful planet. Each person is of a place. In our busy, mobile time, it may well be true that we each have more than one place. But for all of us there is somewhere we are rooted, somewhere that calls us home. For me, the city of my childhood is one of my homes. The town of my college and of my graduate school also feel like homes to me. And as a Jew, every time I fly to Israel, a piece of me is flying home. But at the end of the day, Home (with a capital H) is where my wife and children live. That is where I breathe easiest, where I am nested and settled. Several homes; one Home. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n So the Torah reminds us that even before we\u2019ve unpacked, we each of us has a home. We are of somewhere. We belong. And someday a new generation will take up their homes in what was once ours, just as we dwell in the spot where others have dwelt before us. And life\u2019s blessing is to see that continuity as the blessing it is; to celebrate our rootedness. The lists of names in particular are ripe for creative midrashim, riffs on possible associative or symbolic meanings. <\/span><\/p>\r\n One of these is the chieftain of the tribe of Dan, Bukki ben Yogli (v. 22). I think the rabbis were as charmed as we might be by this unlikely name (that appears only here). The children of Tel Aviv certainly are, for it is the name of a small side street* near Dizengoff Center, which of course they call - Bukki ben Mowgli (a character who really should appear in the Jungle Book\u2019s sequel\u2026).<\/span><\/p>\r\n A \u201cdrash\u201d on this name (probably Chassidic, but I don\u2019t know the source) says that it is from Bukki ben Yogli that we should learn how to relate to our liquor. Yes - how to drink. Which makes it particularly apt right now in the weeks leading up to Purim. <\/span><\/p>\r\n We learn this wisdom not from his behavior, which is lost in the mists of history, but from the name itself. Bukki is reminiscent of the Hebrew word for bottle - <\/span>bakbuk <\/span><\/i>(and indeed is also Hebrew baby talk for bottle). And Yogli, leads to thoughts of <\/span>gil<\/span><\/i>, or <\/span>gilah<\/span><\/i> - joy, merriment. So the lesson is that in all things alcohol related we need to be true to the name. We should raise a glass, and down it, as a celebration of a joyous occasion or event. We shouldn\u2019t go to the bottle looking to improve our mood. Our drinking should be Bukki ben Yogli, the joy should beget the drinking, not Yogli ben Bukki - getting ersatz merriment from the depths of the bottle. <\/span><\/p>\r\n A lesson to remember - unless of course it\u2019s Purim, in which case you\u2019re allowed to drink enough for those fine points to get blurred... *What did Bukki ben Yogli do to deserve a street in his honor in the first Hebrew City? Nothing - it was the chosen pen name of Yehuda Leib Katznelson (1846-1917), Russian-Jewish doctor and publicist of Hebrew
