This census happens after the plague in chapter 25. After another mass death, God wants another census. There are a few unique features about this counting that help explain why this census happens now. This counting is done by families, and there are four death narratives that are mixed in with the names. These four narratives are: Datan and Aviram who were swallowed up by the ground during Korach’s rebellion, Korach himself and the 250 leaders who were burned to death (although not Korach’s sons), Er and Onan who died back in Genesis, and Nadab and Avihu who died in Leviticus.

Why are these stories included? There were plenty of other deaths over the many years. Perhaps the answer comes at the end of the chapter:

Among these there was not one of those enrolled by Moses and Aaron the priest when they recorded the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai. For God had said of them, ‘They shall die in the wilderness.’ Not one of them survived, except Caleb son of Jephuneh and Joshua son of Nun” (verses 64-65).

Each one of the stories listed is a lesson about questioning God’s authority and leadership. Datan, Aviram, Korach, and the 250 directly confronted Moses and Aaron and questioned their authority. Nadav and Avihu decided to go against the commandment of Moses and Aaron by bringing a foreign fire into the Mishkan. And Er and Onan refused to continue the leadership lineage of their father. Finally, the generation in the desert questioned God’s ability to bring them into Canaan.

This chapter is the first count of just the individuals that will be able to enter the land. God promises that “the land, moreover, is to be apportioned by lot; and the allotment shall be made according to the listings of their ancestral tribes” (verse 55). But in order for the people to be ready to enter the land they must remember why their parents were not able to enter the land. God’s authority cannot be questioned. This is also why in the next chapter, God commands Moses to appoint Joshua and the new leader. The older rebellious generations have died out, and now it is time for the new generations to accept God’s authority.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam24-census.jpg","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":549,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam24-census.jpg","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":549
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam24-census.jpg","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":549,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam24-census.jpg","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":549
Abe Mezrich wants to know what our sacred texts say about our world right now. The entrance to the cave closed behind the king and he was caught there in the dark for several days. Then the king suddenly saw emerging out of the dark a beautiful maiden, a woman warrior with her female soldiers. She called the king to come to her. She asked the king: Do you recognize me? He said: No. She said: I am the doe that you were chasing who jumped on your head and you were unable to catch. I want to know -- Why have you made laws against the Jews?

The king then asked her: Who are you? She answered: I am Serah bat Asher, the granddaughter of Jacob, the Jewish patriarch. The king promised her that he would revoke the laws against the Jews and she released him from the dark cave. The king kept his word and gave the Jews beautiful clothes, so they could celebrate all their holidays.

The king told the Jews what had happened to him and asked them if there was in their books someone called Serah bat Asher. They answered: Yes, she was blessed by our father Jacob with immortality. And then the king built a big synagogue where he had entered the cave, so that the Jews could pray on all their holidays as a memorial to Serah bat Asher.

Indeed, a memorial to Serah bat Asher still stands today in the Jewish cemetery at Pir Bakran in Iran.

Image: View of Sera bat Asher cemetery at Pir Bakran (formerly Linjan) near Isfahan; By Kipala

https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num26-Serah_bat_Asher_cemetery_Pir_Bakran-150x150.jpg
https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num26-Serah_bat_Asher_cemetery_Pir_Bakran-300x169.jpg
https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num26-Serah_bat_Asher_cemetery_Pir_Bakran-768x432.jpg
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num26-Serah_bat_Asher_cemetery_Pir_Bakran.jpg","1536x1536-width":794,"1536x1536-height":447,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num26-Serah_bat_Asher_cemetery_Pir_Bakran.jpg","2048x2048-width":794,"2048x2048-height":447
https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num26-Serah_bat_Asher_cemetery_Pir_Bakran-746x420.jpg
Serah Bat Asher - Among those counted now by Moses and by Aaron’s son, Elazar, (Aaron, who had been Moses’ partner in the first count is no longer living), there is not a single man who was counted also in the second year because God had said about them: “they will die in the desert.” Only Caleb Ben Yefuneh and Joshua Bin Nun remained from that number (26:63-65).

Now the count has a very different feel. With this ending, it becomes a count that foregrounds absence perhaps even more than presence. As much as the people has grown, there are no longer the elders, those who left Egypt. It is an utterly new generation, with two survivors in their midst: Caleb and Joshua. And Moses.

For Caleb and Joshua, what is it like to outlive the people with whom you have undergone a miraculous historical transformation? What is it like to be all that is left? To look around and to see only those who have replaced their predecessors? What does it mean to know that you are the only figures who will have been on both sides of history? There and here, then and now. They must reckon with leaving behind the life of slavery but recognizing its shadow in inaugurating a meaningful, intentional freedom.

Moses, too, looking at the tribes, is looking at shadows. Shadows of those who came out of Egypt. He sees the absences of Miriam and Aaron, and the certainty of his own death. He, of all the children of Israel, is truly alone in this counting.

Perhaps now the intense emphasis on remembering the exodus takes a new poignancy. We must remember -- daily, weekly, yearly -- because the event of exodus has been structured so that the memory, rather than the experience of slavery and the first stage of redemption, will be what marks the life of mitzvot in the land of Israel.

image: Michal Ben Hamu

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num14-MichalBenHamu.jpg","1536x1536-width":900,"1536x1536-height":386,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num14-MichalBenHamu.jpg","2048x2048-width":900,"2048x2048-height":386
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num14-MichalBenHamu.jpg","1536x1536-width":900,"1536x1536-height":386,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num14-MichalBenHamu.jpg","2048x2048-width":900,"2048x2048-height":386
A Harvest of Normal: Boring and Wonderful! A second census is called for, and instead of just letting us know that it was successfully concluded, the Torah decides to share each and every name from every single tribe, down to the clans, the families, the individuals.

Every year, I resolve to read more slowly, to pour over every word of every parashah, and this is the one that defeats me each time. However noble my intention, by the third or forth clan, my eyes glaze over, my attention drifts, and I find myself skimming quickly just in case the Torah smuggled in something interesting in this smothering blanket of endless names.

In a book that is famous for its sparse descriptions and its tight use of words, why do we need an entire chapter that reads like roll call?

Years ago, one of my teachers, Rabbi Burton Visotzky, offered a pithy piece of wisdom: he said that this parasha was boring, unless your name was one of the names listed. I think about that now as a rabbi. Plaques with the names of the deceased seem endless and dreary, unless you are looking for the plaque of your loved one’s name. Honor rolls of prize winners are dull and repetitive, unless one of those prize winners is you, and any fundraiser can recount how very important it is to each donor that their name and gift be properly enumerated in any public donor recognition.

So, answer number one is that the detailed names matter for those who know and love the individuals listed. Life isn’t all glamor and glitter. As we age, we come to cherish days in which there is nothing to report – no big headliner of news, good or bad. Just a day filled with the blessings of simply living: same breakfast, same tasks, same companions, same dinner, same evening, same bedroom and bedtime.
