And dedicating some of yourself.\u00a0\r\n\r\n","post_main_content_content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Jonathan Sacks calls the episode of the spies from Numbers 13 \u201cperhaps the single greatest collective failure of leadership in the Torah.\u201d The negative report brought by the spies was born out of a fear of success \u2013 once they enter the land, they will be far more responsible for their own destiny than ever before. And that\u2019s a scary proposition. God, Himself, counters the fear by offering hope and encouragement in the context of new <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitzvot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (commandments) for the nation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mitzvah of bringing meal offerings made of varying proportions of flour, oil and wine, is prefaced in Numbers 15:1-2 with these words: \u201cThe Lord spoke to Moses saying, speak to the children of Israel and say to them\u2026\u201d Then God details a different offering: \u201cThe first portion of dough you shall separate and set aside as a gift for the Lord (15:18-19).\u201d This is the mitzvah known today as \u201cseparating challah,\u201d and observant Jewish bread and challah makers have kept this commandment alive ever since it was given, by removing a small portion of their dough and setting it aside.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi points out a linguistic difference between the commandments of separating challah and the previous offerings.\u00a0 \u201cWhen you will come in\u201d is expressed as \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ki tavo\u2019u<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d for the various meal offerings, but \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u2019voachem<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d with respect to separating the dough. The former, says Mishna Sifrei Bamidbar 110, connotes the time when the Jewish nation will have settled the land, which is yet some time in the future. But the latter, the \u201ccoming\u201d related to challah, refers to their moment of their arrival in the land. This commandment will apply not when they take possession of their respective tribal portions in Israel \u2013 the geographical areas given by God, but immediately upon arriving in the land God will bring them to.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The failure of the spies to encourage the nation to move forward \u2013 even worse, actively discouraging them - is mitigated by God offering an assurance that they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enter the land, God Himself will take them, and despite the hardships of settling the land, they will be rewarded with the opportunity of a new mitzvah the moment they arrive. But why this particular mitzvah?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challah dough taken must be the best of the dough, taken immediately upon kneading, not scraped from the dregs of the bowl. Inherent in that specification is that, from the moment we arrive in our homeland we are to give the very best of ourselves. Then we will be able to settle the land and proceed with all else we are destined for. I might also suggest one other explanation. For those who are bread bakers, or lovers of fresh home-made bread, think of the sensory experience you get from just the aroma of fresh bread, right out of the oven. It\u2019s an experience that says, \u201cAh, my home is wonderful!\u201d Perhaps upon immediately arriving in Israel, that is the experience God wants us to have. How dare you whore after your heart!<br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, as they shriek, the one blue fringe that once was one becomes two, three, four, five\u2026<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their head they know what they need is grounding, earth to plant their ever sprouting roots.<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But their heart silences the truths they think they know.<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life is not only found in the soil down below, in the finite earth upon which one stands.<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life is in the infiniteness of the bluest of blues. In the sea, in the sky, in the Heavens, in the throne of God.<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From one end of the universe to the next \u2013 from here to there to truly everywhere; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is where life is found.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the unwinding of a frayed fringe. The unbinding of the bound. The shattered, the broken, the cracked. The entire nation finds out that they will not be entering the land for forty years until almost all of the adults pass away. After such an emotional tour de force chapter 15 discusses\u2026 more sacrifices? Sacrifices given by converts? A single incident of someone gathering sticks on Shabbat? Tzitzit? Why are all of these topics mixed together now?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer begins in the second verse \u201cSpeak to the Israelite people and say to them: When you enter the land that I am giving you to settle in.\u201d The details are all about sacrifices, but the message comes first. God is telling the people not to worry. They will eventually be entering the land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, the people may have thought that with their severe punishment, that their nation will become a pariah. Not so, says God. Converts will still want to be part of the nation. That\u2019s why the second set of rules is about converts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, the people think that law and order will break down now that the older generations are doomed. Not so, says God. The legal system will still be in place and those that violate the laws will be punished accordingly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, God commands the people to wear <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzizit <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not only as a constant reminder of God\u2019s rules and laws but also to remember that \u201cI am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I, your God\u201d (verse 41). God took the people out of Egypt and he will not leave them all to die in the desert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This chapter is the perfect response to assuage the We confess our wrongs, express remorse, and resolve not to repeat, but how can we undo the past? Surely, what\u2019s done is done. The asymmetry of time means that we can affect the future but not the past. However, it is not quite so. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The release of vows that takes place through Kol Nidrei constitutes a legal precedent \u2013 the only one \u2013 for what we seek, through teshuva, to achieve for our sins. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ground on which we seek annulment of vows is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0125arata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cremorse.\u201d The fact that we now regret having taken the vow is the reason the sages were able to say that full intent \u2013 an essential element of a valid vow \u2013 was lacking from the outset.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is precisely what we do when we confess our sins and express our remorse for them.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We thereby signal retroactively that full intent was lacking from our sins. Had we known then what we know now, we would not have acted as we did. Therefore we did not really mean to do what we did. This is what Resh Lakish meant when he said that teshuva has the power retroactively to turn deliberate sins into inadvertent ones (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 86b), and inadvertent sins can be forgiven. In fact this is why, immediately after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kol Nidrei<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we recite the biblical verse that says: \u201cAll the congregation of Israel will be forgiven\u2026for they sinned without intent [<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bishgaga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]\u201d (Num. 15:26). Such a statistic calls for an explanation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get to the answer, I believe, we need to turn one page back\u2014to the concluding portion of the previous chapter. There, we see that the Israelites, demoralized by the information that they would be wandering in the desert for the better part of forty years, staged a desperate attempt to enter the land, prematurely, by force. They were routed by the Amalekites and the Canaanites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems to me that at this point they could well have despaired of ever reaching the Promised Land, as indicated by the cry they took up: \u201cLet us about face and return to Egypt\u201d (14:4). In consideration of this, perhaps, God prefaced His next remarks to them with the reassurance that this was, indeed, a setback, and deservedly so, but that it, too, would pass, and one day they and\/or their children would \u201carrive in the land\u201d which had been vouchsafed to He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. Following the story of a man punished for gathering sticks on Shabbat (15:32-36) \u2013 and to help prevent such transgressions in the future -- our Chapter concludes with the Mitzvah of Tzitzit (\u201cfringes\u201d): \u201cThe Lord spoke to Moses saying: Speak to the Israelite people and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout the ages; let them attach a cord of blue (ptil tekhelet) to the fringe at each corner\u2026look at it and recall all the commandments of the Lord and observe them\u2026\u201d (15:37-39, summarized in Deut. 22:12). <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Midrash (Tanhuma Buber, Shelah 31 and parallels) subtly ties the \u201ccord of blue\u201d \u00a0in the Tzitzit to another sort of \u201ccord\u201d that may also assist in the performance of the commandments in general. This is done by relating a parable [mashal] about a man who has been thrown into the water. The captain of the boat casts him a rope, saying: Grab this rope and hold on for dear life, for if you let it go, you are lost. Similarly, the Holy One, blessed be He, says to Israel: As long as you hold fast to the Mitzvot, then, \u201cAll of you who hold fast to the Lord, Your God, are alive today\u201d (Deuteronomy 4:4). <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In ancient times, seafaring, even on the Mediterranean, was fraught with danger (see Daniel Sperber, Nautica Talmudica, 1986, pp. 94-106). Even today, boats above a certain size and ships are generally required by law to have at the ready rescue equipment, such as life rings or lifebuoys attached to lifelines, much like the lifeline cast to the man thrown overboard in our parable. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concluding application (nimshal) of our parable, beginning \u201cSo too does the Holy One, blessed be He, say to Israel\u2026\u201d suggests the following application to our present situation. In our day, many of those drawn to a life of halakhic observance may do so because of a feeling of \u201chaving been thrown overboard\u201d from the storm-tossed \u201cship\u201d on the turbulent \u201csea\u201d of their previous lifestyle. And it is the \u201clifeline\u201d of the Torah, thrown to them by the \u201cCaptain of the Universe\u201d, that may serve to save them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: With these words, the adults realize that from this point on, when Moses speaks to Bnei Yisrael, he's speaking past them, addressing himself to the children. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story is no longer about them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this reality comes a radical, but entirely logical notion, embodied by the wood-gatherer. If the story is no longer about us, if we're no longer 'Bnei Yisrael', then there can be no more Shabbat, nor any other obligations. It's such a valid point that Moses, Aharon, and the entire congregation are left speechless. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe he's right. Maybe it's game-over for the parents? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick consultation with God reveals that it's a mistaken notion. The parents will still be held to the same standards, although it is primarily their children we're concerned with.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why? Perhaps the \"randomly\" placed parsha of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzitzit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holds some clues.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>tzitzit <\/em>remind us that, in a profound way, it is <\/span><em>always<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the children that we need to be primarily concerned with in our religious lives. The moment a child is born, a person's most important religious obligation becomes the transmission of the tradition to him or her. This obligation occupies center stage in the Exodus story (we discussed it way back in Exodus chapter 10), and in the annual reenactment of the Exodus on the Seder night, when our children are the stars of the show. Arguably the most basic religious obligation in Judaism, the learning of Torah, is actually only a derivative of the obligation to <\/span><b>teach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Torah to our children (see Kiddushin 29b).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzitzit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, associated closely with the Exodus, are a daily physical reminder of this idea. What is important is not the garment, but what sprouts, what grows (see Rashi's explanation of the word) from the edges- that is the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tachlit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the ultimate purpose.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the message that the wood-gatherer didn't, or refused to understand. Creating an environment for our children that supports their religious development is not meant to be a by-product of our own religious commitment, or an after-thought.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is every parent's greatest, holiest, How else can we explain why 12 individuals are sent to gather information about the Land, and ten are afraid while two, Caleb and Joshua, are not?<\/p>\r\n<p>What is the difference between them?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>They are told to see whether the people are strong or weak, whether the land is good or bad, the towns in encampments or fortified and whether the soil is rich or poor (13:18-20). Finally, they are told to bring fruit back.<\/p>\r\n<p>They bring back clusters of grapes so large that two of the spies had to carry them (13:23) and report that the land does flow with milk and honey, the people are strong and the cities fortified. The final and most telling detail of the account is that \u201cwe looked like grasshoppers in our eyes and so we looked in their eyes\u201d (13:33). How did they know what they looked like in the eyes of the inhabitants of the land? They didn\u2019t; they assumed that others must see them as they see themselves.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Talmud in Sotah 35a addresses this matter of perspective directly. Rava taught that God planned for the land to appear to consume its inhabitants as a good sign for the Israelites getting ready to conquer it, since people in the land dying would be a distraction from invaders. The Israelites misinterpreted this as a negative sign.<\/p>\r\n<p>And the grasshoppers? Likewise, as the Canaanites were eating their meal of mourning for their dead brethren underneath cedar trees, the spies climbed the trees to hide.\u00a0 When the Canaanites glanced upwards, seeing people in the trees they said, \u201cWe see people who look like grasshoppers in the trees.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The difference in the two groups is their perspective: do they see from above or from below? Do they perceive themselves as grasshoppers waiting to be squashed by giants, or as those free to go up to observe all that is below?<\/p>\r\n<p>The real question posed by the differing reports is: how best to proceed?<\/p>\r\n<p>A modern corollary about perspective can be found in the words of Torah teacher Rabbanit Rachelle Sprecher Frankel, director of the Hilchata program at Matan and mother of Naftali Frankel who was murdered along with two other boys in June 2014.\u00a0 Frankel told me that one can \u201cclosely focus on the wounded self\u201d and make that \u201call you see\u201d or one can use a \u201cwider lens\u201d and pull back and see \u201cso many other blessings and expectations and successes and failures.\u00a0 When you work with a wide lens there is so much blessing there.\u201d\u00a0 Even terrible tragedies need to be put in perspective.<\/p>\r\n<p>In this week\u2019s portion of Shelach the Israelites learn that their lack of perspective will mean they need to spend forty years, one for each day of the scouting trip of the spies (14: 34) so that none of those living in this generation of excessive complainers (14: 27) will enter the Ten return with an indecisive and fearful report: the land is good but the people are giants and their cities invincible. Two, Joshua and Caleb, argue the opposite \u2013 but the people ignore them because they are scared and downhearted. They say, \u201cLet us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt\u201d (14:4).<\/p>\r\n<p>God becomes angry and threatens to destroy the people and start again with Moshe. Moshe intervenes, and God decides that the people will be punished by having to spend forty years in the desert. Their children will eventually enter the land, not them.<\/p>\r\n<p>There then follows a series of laws about sacrifices, challah, and forgiveness for sins committed by mistake. This section of laws is interrupted by a short story about a Shabbat-breaker. Towards this goal, God speaks to Moshe in this parsha and tells him: Send for yourself men to spy out the land of Canaan. For this very important mission, Moshe chooses 12 spies, one from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. Before they set out he gives them some instructions. Moshe tells them to travel around the country to see what kind of land it is, whether it is \u2018fat\u2019 or \u2018lean\u2019 and if \u2018there are trees there.\u2019 God also tells them to check out the people who live there, whether they are \u2018strong or weak,\u2019 \u2018few or many.\u2019 He ends with the word It is true with the first-born, with first fruits, and also with baking: \u201cas the first yield of your baking, you shall set aside a loaf as a gift (verse 20).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What wasn\u2019t clear?<\/em> The punishment for the desecration of the Shabbat is death. So what was the question regarding the wood-gatherer (verse 34)? Perhaps the public nature of the violation necessitated a particularly public punishment so that people would <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yir\u2019u veyira\u2019u<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: they would see and fear.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Tzitzit<\/em>. The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzitzit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the fringe, the threads. From the phrasing of these verses it\u2019s clear that one was meant to put fringes on the hem of every garment. Like a memory knot, or tying a string on one\u2019s finger. A mnemonic that goes with you everywhere, at all times. Why do we need such reminders? The explanation connects to human nature: \u201cso that you do not follow your heart and eyes in your lustful urge\u201d (verse 39).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Echoes of Leviticus.<\/em> In case you felt for a moment like you were back in Leviticus, the ending of the chapter comes and reinforces that: \u201cto be holy to your God.
