Perhaps they are motivated by a combination of a doomed generation and seeing Moses throw up his hands in the face of constant complaining. Korach was Moses’s first cousin- the son of Moses’s uncle. Moses’s father Amram was the first born of Kehat, Levi’s son, so the complaint is not about a first born right. Korach probably felt that he was at least from the tribe of Levi and should have had a bigger leadership role.

The 250 are a mystery. This is the fourth group of “leaders” introduced in Numbers: the 12 princes of the beginning of the chapter, the 70 elders who were appointed to assist Moses, and the spies. This group does not even match a number from Yitro’s judges. Some commentators try to work out a mathematical split to say that Korach selected 23 from each tribe as 23 counts as the minimum number for a high court to assess capital cases.

Others say that this group was mostly from Levi and Reuben, the two tribes of the main conspirators. They must have felt they should have a larger leadership role as descendants of the first born. This leads the midrash to explain that On either got cold feet or his wife got him drunk to keep him out of trouble later. The Torah must have named him in order to teach a lesson in teshuva. Datan and Abiram give the most chutzpah to Moses and Aaron by even refusing to meet with them when Moses summons them.

Who are they? They do not appear anywhere else in the Torah. The midrash speculates that they were the two Israelites whom Moses tried to stop from fighting and who ratted Moses out for killing the Egyptian. They were also responsible for much of the rabble rousing so far in the wilderness. The midrash also explains that they were worse then Korach because at least Korach’s sons are saved and are included in Psalms. Datan and Abiram’s entire families are killed. This gives the midrash license to blame all of the troubles of the past two years on these two They are all holy; the mitzvah of tzitzit just given testifies to that. In fact, when you look carefully, even the first test devised by Moses supports Korach's thesis. You might have expected that the result of the test was supposed to be something akin to the result of the test of the staffs in chapter 17, in which Aaron's staff is treated uniquely. Presumably, 'the one whom God chooses' would be represented by the one for whom heavenly fire descends.

Truly, all the congregation is holy, and heavenly fire descends for all of them. As Rabban Gamliel expresses it when offering a job to two rabbis: "It is not lordship I offer you, it is servitude!" Of course, it is lordship as well; it is power, and privilege. But when that is a person's goal, or if it turns into their primary motivation, leadership becomes self-destructive. Barely a week goes by without a headline which proves that, eventually, hubris brings this about even absent heavenly fire.

If you read the text closely, you'll notice that it never says that Aaron himself offers incense. For all the community are holy, all of them, and the Lord is in their midst. To say that someone is not a Tallit she-Kulah Tekhelet suggests that they are not as righteous as they make themselves out to be. Unbeknownst to most Hebrew speakers today, this modern usage of a Talmudic expression is, in effect, a colorful midrashic description of the biblical Korah. Korah is depicted as having made himself out to be even more halakhically observant than Moses, by suggesting an impractically strict interpretation of the Torah.

Korah’s misuse of Talmudic reasoning to further his rebellion against the authority of Moses ultimately failed miserably. Korach and his Levite followers formed a coalition with other dissatisfied groups, Dathan, Aviram, and On from the tribe of Reuven and “two hundred and fifty Israelites, chieftains of the community chosen in the assembly, men of repute” (16:2).

Each group had its own grievance. Korach resented Moses for selecting Aaron and his sons for the priesthood rather than his family. The Reuvenites were angry because their tribe was deprived of the status and privileges of the firstborn. The chieftains of the community were bitter because God appointed Moses as the sole leader of the Israelites, as they were certain that they, too, were capable of leadership: “Why then do you raise yourselves?” (16:3).

“When Moses heard this, he fell on his face” (16:4). He approached each of the rebelling factions to try to resolve the various disputes. When all his attempts failed, God took a hand, and told Moses and Aaron: “Stand back from the community that I may annihilate them in an instant” (16:21). Moses and Aaron pleaded with God: “When one man sins, will You be wrathful with the whole community?” (Num. 16:22). God then said: “Speak to the community and say: Withdraw from about the abodes of Korah, Dathan, and Aviram” (Num. 16:24).

How did God punish the rebels, and what can we learn from that about their sin?

The painting conflates all the rebels into one large and complex scene. Moses, standing to the right holding his rod, is figured against dark burgundy-colored hills that seem to reflect his stormy emotions. The artist depicts the elders of Israel aligned behind Moses, using a blue arrow-like design to suggest their cohesiveness. On the far left we see the round-topped tents of Korah, Dathan, and Aviram.

As they were protesting God’s choice of Moses as their political and spiritual leader because they wanted to enjoy the earthly benefits that they imagined would come with leadership, their punishment was to be of the Earth, which would open up and swallow them. Moses had barely finished speaking when the ground under them burst asunder: “They went down alive into Sheol with all that belonged to them; the Earth closed over them” (16:32–33).

The picture shows Korach and his followers and the rebellious group from the tribe of Reuven falling helplessly into the chasm and the Israelite chieftains who aspired to reach Heaven by becoming self-appointed priests as being engulfed by a fire that came from Heaven. Along the right side of the chasm we see yellow flames devouring very small sketched figures with incense pans in their hands.

The conflation of This verticality also suggests reversal; the powerless ascendant, the powerful brought to their knees, Moses falling on his face. A polemic, the glint of a blade, an overturned table, the last made first. Revolt, rebellion, insurrection- perhaps we have so many words for the same phenomena because there is always the fear of, and attraction to, upending the order of things. The world might be made anew, but it is terrifying to contemplate the implications of rampaging change. The pull of the current might surprise even the strongest swimmers.

Today’s chapter is a carefully staged account of rebellion. It features Korach, a member of the elite, fluently speaking the language of populism. If the episode of the spies in chapter 14 is an earthquake from below, spoken in rough accents, Korach’s efforts are the suave instigations of the upper classes, those privileged enough to know just how close to power they stand. Unfortunately, grasping makes one vulnerable to falling, and Korach’s tumble into the pit is a riposte to his ambition to ascend the mountain top.

Moses has the benefit of bolstering his leadership with the ballast of signs and wonders. His election is ratified by Divine Election. This does not entirely mute Korach’s voice- his challenge still stands, millennia later. But we have it harder. Discerning the pretenders from the leaders, the sophists from the visionaries has never been more difficult, or more necessary. The ambition to lead blurs into the hubris to control and command. If we are all holy, why are some holier than others? And how truly are any of us, really, when we incline our ear to the haunting melody of glory?

image: The Punishment of Korach, Sandro Botticelli, (1445–1510), photo: Attilias,

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num16-Korah_Botticelli.jpg","1536x1536-width":620,"1536x1536-height":599,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num16-Korah_Botticelli.jpg","2048x2048-width":620,"2048x2048-height":599
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num16-Korah_Botticelli.jpg","1536x1536-width":620,"1536x1536-height":599,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Num16-Korah_Botticelli.jpg","2048x2048-width":620,"2048x2048-height":599
Korach - The argument of Korah and all his company” (Mishna Avot 5:17).

Following Meiri and other medieval commentators, the sages are here distinguishing between an argument for the sake of truth and one for the sake of victory. Hillel and Shammai were arguing for the sake of truth, the determination of God's will. Korach, who challenged Moses and Aaron for leadership, was arguing for the sake of victory: he too wanted to be a leader.

In argument for the sake of truth, if you win, you win, but if you lose, you also win, because being defeated by the truth is the only defeat that is also a victory. Judaism rejects this idea, not because it is never true – in the case of an argument not for the sake of heaven, it is – but because we can always tell when it is and when it isn't.
