Consequently, it is quite jarring to use \u201csalt\u201d as a sign of an everlasting covenant regarding the sacred significance of sacrifices, a practice that Jewish sources insist are one of the fundamental pillars of the world (see Avot, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethics of the Fathers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> 1:2)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brit melach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first appears in Lev. 2:13, \u201c\u2026You shall not omit from your meal offering the salt of your covenant with God\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Nachmanides explains that the comparison with \u201csalt\u201d has both positive as well as negative elements:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 Salt is derived from water, and it is through the power of the sun which shines upon it, that it becomes salt. Now the nature of water is that it soaks into the earth and makes it bring forth and bud; but after it becomes salt, it destroys every place and burns it..<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Since a covenant is inclusive of all attributes, water and fire come into it \u2026 The Kingdom of God, (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) just like salt which seasons all foods and helps to preserve them, but destroys them when they are over-saturated with it. Thus, salt is like the covenant\u2026 Therefore, He says in connection with the offerings\u2026 \u201cthe salt of the world,\u201d and by virtue of it (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the world<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) exists or may be destroyed\u2026\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although a person should devote his every waking effort to worshiping God (\u201cIn all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths smooth,\u201d Proverbs 3:6), sources are rife with the dangers inherent in \u201cover-applying\u201d religion or utilizing it incorrectly:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is taught that Rabbi Bena\u2019a would say: Anyone who engages in Torah for its own sake, his Torah study will be an elixir of life for him, as it is stated (Proverbs 3:18): \u201cIt is a tree of life to them who lay hold upon it\u201d \u2026 And anyone who engages in Torah not for its own sake, it will be an elixir of death for him, as it is stated (Deut. 32:2): \u201cMy doctrine shall drop (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ya\u2019arof<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ) as the rain,\u201d and \u201c<em>\u2018arifa\u201d <\/em>means nothing other than killing, as it is stated: (Ibid. 21:4) \u201cAnd they shall break the heifer\u2019s neck (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arefu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) there in the valley.\u201d (Ta\u2019anit 7a)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referring to the sacrifices as \u201ca covenant of salt\u201d then becomes a cautionary At first this chapter seems to repeat what the Torah has dictated many times before- that the priests work in the Mishkan and the Levites help as well. But this time when God explains that the Levites and priests do not get any land, God also dictates the special gifts that they should receive. The priests get <em>trumah<\/em>, first fruits, and first-born animals, and the Levites get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>maaser<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201ctithe\u201d)- 1\/10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of certain produce. These gifts are given to the priests and Levites because they are not given any specific property in the land, and as a gift for working in the Mishkan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>maaser<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had come up before, but it was never designated as a gift for the Levites. In Leviticus 27:30-32 God commands that 1\/10 of all grains and fruits and flocks should be \u201choly for God.\u201d Why does God only dictate now that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>maaser<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should be given to the Levites? Perhaps this is another gift given to mollify those who partook in the rebellion by the Levites under Korach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another possible answer is that it links the Levites to the people. The priests are given the task of performing the sacrificial rites, so they have constant contact with the people who bring the sacrifices and other offerings. These gifts given from the sacrifices are personal in nature as the priest and the penitent share the same animal. This creates a bond between the priests and the people. In the case of the Levites, they perform perfunctory jobs. They sing, blow the trumpets, carry the Mishkan, and guard it. There is not as much interaction with the people. God is concerned that a rift may be created between the Levites and the people. God gives the Levites the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>maaser<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to create a symbiotic relationship between the people and the Levites. The Levites are given a leadership role in the Mishkan, but they are reliant on gifts from the people. The Levites cannot cross those that help sustain them. You can ascribe dirty political self-interest to Korach, you can doubt the sincerity of his motivations, but you can't deny that he led a movement, and a movement doesn't form without authentic concerns and feelings behind it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that there were no small number of people who felt lorded over by the Kohanim and Levites, who had been given a great centrality and importance in the organization of the camp. In all likelihood, these feelings were reinforced by Kohanim and Leviim who felt and acted superior to the average Jew.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the choosing of the Levites actually had precisely the opposite intention, as \u00a0I have suggested in previous chapters, as does much of the legislation regarding the Kohanim. Korach's popularity highlights that these messages were not necessarily fully internalized, and so chapter 18 comes along to reinforce them once again.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike in Spiderman, where first comes great power, and with it, great responsibility, chapter 18 emphasizes that the order is reversed. First comes the responsibility: the Korach fiasco left the Jewish people requesting the responsibility to guide the Jewish people to a safe encounter with the Divine. The Levites are responsible for the people, and the Kohanim are also responsible for the Levites. In both cases, the text emphasizes that those who have been charged with the responsibility will be held personally accountable for any misdeeds on the part of the people who they are meant to guard.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is only on account of their personal accountability for the people's sins that the Levites have the privilege of receiving their gifts. Instead, they will serve God in the Temple and God will be their portion. The people of Israel will bring them the sacrifices and the fruits of their assigned portions of land as gifts (18:20).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this difference \u2013 this specific destiny \u2013 something to be celebrated by the Levites? Their closeness to God, the freedom from working the land and tending the livestock, their centrality among the children of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or is this difference something to be mourned? \u00a0No land that belongs to the Levites alone; none of the satisfaction in sowing and reaping, bringing first fruits; all the demands and the responsibilities attendant on the service of God in the Temple?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this difference between the Levites and the other tribes merely descriptive, or is value-laden? What do we make of social difference?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last few chapters have been deeply concerned with differences and what they amount to. Miriam and Aaron speak about Moses, and God becomes angry, reproving them for not understanding that Moses is different, his order of prophecy is different, he cannot be judged as any other prophet.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Korach and his party then come to challenge the authority of Moses but this time, the confrontation positions Aaron on the side of privilege and power, the very same Aaron who had just been positioned on the other side of this debate. \u201cThe entire assembly is holy,\u201d Korach argues, \u201cwhy are you elevating yourselves above them?\u201d (16:3) Why is it that Aaron should be High Priest and that the Levites have claimed such power for themselves?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuses of power are one thing. Fair to say that they are wrong and should be curbed. But what if we are not looking at an abuse? What does it mean to be distinguished for a different path? To be selected for something? What does it mean not to be selected for something?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron asks this about Moses; then Korach turns around to ask it about Aaron. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we, the children of Israel, contemporary Jews, might ask it of ourselves. A people separated: what does this mean? What is to be celebrated? What is a covenant of salt?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century Hasidic master Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev explains that this covenant is connected to the deeds of Korach, who argued that everyone was holy, and therefore everyone should be priests.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The priests, he writes, represent the divine attribute of \u201c<em>chesed<\/em>\u201d (lovingkindness), whereas the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levites represent the divine attribute of \u201c<em>din<\/em>\u201d (justice, or <em>gevurah<\/em> in the sefirotic tree) the quality of boundaries and strength. The problem with Korach\u2019s rebellion was that it left no room for <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">din<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He wanted everyone to be pure <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but in truth, the world needs judgment and justice, boundaries, and strength too. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centuries earlier Ramban explained salt as a combination of fire and water, which is to say, justice and lovingkindness. He says it's the combination of those two, the appropriate balance of those two, which sustains all the worlds. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rav Levi Yitzchak thus teaches that the covenant of salt (representing the balance of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>chesed<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">din<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) came as a response to Korach's actions, in order to remind us of what's wrong with Korach's imbalanced view. The world needs an appropriate balance of lovingkindness and justice.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading this passage, I marvel at how contemporary and real it feels. I've been in contexts where people want everyone and everything to be all-<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-all-the-time, and they are not healthy at all. Love that flows without boundaries is a flood, destructive and damaging. When we over-privilege <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the expense of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">din<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are no appropriate roles or boundaries... and a community in which roles and boundaries are not honored is a community that will inevitably be rife with ethical violations and abuse. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Lennon may have written that \"all you need is love,\" but on a spiritual level, he was wrong. The world needs judgment, discernment, and justice every bit as much as it needs unbridled or unbounded love -- indeed, as Ramban notes, a world that has only one half of that critical binary cannot The terumah (\u201cheave-offering\u201d given to the priests) is extensively discussed (verses 8-28). At the end of this discussion, we read \u201c\u2026you shall bring the Terumah for the Lord to Aaron the priest\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This biblical phrase does not seem a likely candidate for inclusion in discussion of a major question of Jewish belief. But, according to the Talmud (Bavli Sanhedrin 90b) Rabbi Yohanan said: From where in the Torah can we learn about the Resurrection of the Dead? [From where] it is said: \u201c\u2026you [Levites] shall bring the Terumah for the Lord to Aaron the priest\u201d. But does Aaron live forever?! For he never entered the Land of Israel (see Numbers 20:28; 33:38), where they would be giving him Terumah -- a commandment that was only observed once the Israelites entered the Land of Israel). \u00a0But, [this apparent contradiction] teaches that Aaron will live in the Future\u201d [i.e. he will be resurrected in bodily form, for he will consume Terumah]. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This demonstrates that Resurrection can be learned from the Torah. The Mishnah [Sanhedrin 11:1), on which this Talmudic tradition elaborates, states that \u201cAll Israel has a portion in the World to Come\u201d, but with a few exceptions, the first of which is, quite understandably, one who claims that Resurrection cannot be learned from the Torah. It certainly makes sense that a person cannot take advantage of something whose very existence he denies. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud continues [90a-92b] with an extensive discussion of the Rabbinic doctrine of physical Resurrection, which was not accepted by all Jews already in their time, and until our day, when it continues to be a \u201cbone of contention\u201d among Rabbis and laypeople. But, to this day the text of the traditional Amidah prayer (\u201cThe Eighteen Benedictions\u201d), affirms belief in Resurrection, in the conclusion of the second benediction, which celebrates It is this quality above all others that enables God to communicate with Moses in a manner different from conversation with other prophets.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Korach\u2019s manner and message are the opposite of humble and his arrogance and hubris lead him and his followers to the abyss, literally, as the earth opens up to swallow them (16:32).\u00a0Korach is certain of his message, \u201cwe are all holy\u201d (16:3) and its impact \u2013 Moses should be deposed as leader in his favor.\u00a0The men of \u201crepute,\u201d (literally \"men of name\") those who are \u201cprinces of the group, called to the\u00a0assembly\u201d (16:2) are the ones who join with him. These are men from the highest levels of society, supposedly the most respected.\u00a0The term \u201cname\u201d is used ironically, however, as they are not named. Yet, these are the 250 men who blindly follow this leader \u2013 and are killed.<\/p>\r\n<p>Moses, in contrast, waits and asks when he does not know something.\u00a0The cases of the wood gatherer on the Sabbath (15:32-36), the blasphemer (Lev 24:10-23), the inheritance possibilities of the daughters of Zelophehad (Num. 27:1-11) and how those unable to observe Passover in its time should behave (Num. 9:6-13) are all examples of the humility to ask a question when uncertain rather than act rashly and with haste and commit an error.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Moses and Aaron show their humility in this episode by pleading for the lives of those who want to disenfranchise them and remove them from leadership.\u00a0They say, \u201cO God, source of the breath of all flesh.\u00a0 One man sins and you will be wrathful with the whole clan?\u201d (16: 22).<\/p>\r\n<p>One of the lessons we learn from Korach\u2019s confrontation with his cousin is that, in the absence of divine knowledge, human leaders are best sticking with what they know, and remaining As Ramban points out, it could only have happened because after the sin of the spies and the resulting punishment that the generation who left Egypt would not live to enter the land, the people were bitterly disappointed. Building on their unrest and shattered hopes, Korach assembled a rabble of troublemakers \u2013 some from his own tribe, some from the tribe of Reuben, and others who had leadership positions elsewhere \u2013 and challenged the leadership of Moses and Aaron.\u00a0 The rebellion failed \u2013 the ground opened up and swallowed the chief rebels \u2013 yet the complaints of the people continued. They ended only when Aaron\u2019s rod, alone among the rods for each tribe, blossomed, and brought forth almonds, a message of peaceful conflict resolution. and the further away one is, the more foreign. The Kohathites prevent all those who are not Kohathite from drawing news to the Temple vessels. Priests are permitted to enter the precinct which is forbidden to disbarred priests and to Levites. And the Levites prevent the entrance of Israelites\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A service of dedication.<\/em> This is a lovely phrase - <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avodat matanah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - from verse 7 that perhaps indicates the sense of selfless service among the priests - a privilege rather than a chore.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Holy means holy<\/em>. The gifts of the priests are taken from what the Israelites have consecrated to God. Holy means holy, and needs to be treated as such. For instance, \u201ceveryone of your household who is clean may eat it\u201d (verse 11). But is that an instruction (just) for the priests?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A covenant of salt<\/em>. Verse 19. What\u2019s the connection between salt and the covenant?
