During the exodus there is a reference to the elders. It is possible that these individuals were the elders that accompanied Moses to Pharaoh and they maintained some sort of leadership role. Rashi explains that they were the Israelite taskmasters responsible for the slaves in Egypt. Whenever the Israelites underperformed, the taskmasters would be beaten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Numbers ch. 1, they are referred to as \u201cThose are the elected of the assembly, the chieftains of their ancestral tribes: they are the heads of the contingents of Israel\u201d (verse 16). This implies that they were elected to lead the tribe - it was not a hereditary position. It also might undermine Rashi\u2019s explanation, although it is possible they were chosen because of the sacrifice they made in Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 2 describes them as both heads of ancestral homes and chieftains of the tribes. What is the difference between these two things? It\u2019s possible that the Torah is describing their rise to prominence from simply heads of households to chieftains of entire tribes. Sfrono explains that each of these titles represented a function of leaders. They were heads of the tribes so received the prestigious job of giving the dedication sacrifices, but they were also representatives of the people and gave the sacrifices as atonement for their tribesmen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are also described as chiefs of the enrollment. What is the enrollment? Rashi explains that they were the chief representatives to Moses during the census count. Chizkuni adds that because a census is frowned upon, they had to bring these sacrifices as atonement. The enrollment could also have to do with the different levels of judges that Moshe established at the behest of Jethro. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. The midrashic collection known as Pesiqta de-Rav Kahanah begins with a type of midrashic homily known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petikhta\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cProem\u201d), which typically opens with a verse from the Prophets or Writings and concludes with the first verse of the relevant holiday or sabbath Torah portion. Here the opening verse is \u201cI have come into my garden, my sister, my bride\u201d (Song of Songs 5:1). This is followed by a parable about a king who sent away his consort. When he sent for her to return, she sent back, \u201cLet him make a new arrangement for me and then I will return\u201d. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is compared to God, who received Noah\u2019s sacrifice from on high (Genesis 8:21), but \u201cnow\u201d (according to Numbers, Chapter 8) He receives sacrifices \u201cfrom below\u201d, by having His Shekhinah descend into the Tent of Meeting on earth to receive the sacrifices detailed in our chapter. This core idea is further elaborated by a detailed discussion of how the Shekhinah (i.e. God\u2019s \u201cdwelling presence\u201d) initially was manifest in our world, as suggested by Adam and Eve having heard the \u201cvoice of the Lord walking in the Garden\u201d (Genesis 3:8). But because of human sin the Shekhinah ascended by stages to the \u201cseventh heaven\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, the Shekhinah was brought back in stages to our world by seven righteous biblical figures beginning with Abraham.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it was Moses who merited bringing the Shekhinah back to dwell again on earth, as suggested by our chapter, which begins \u201cOn the day that Moses finished erecting the Tent of Meeting\u201d (Numbers 7:1) and ends with God speaking to Moses from down on earth: \u201cWhen Moses went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with Him, he would hear the Voice addressing him from above the cover that was on top of the Ark of the Covenant between the two cherubim; Knowing that the Torah is generally pretty sparse with its words, assuming that less is more, we have to ask about any unnecessary phrase we find. In this case, if the Torah is going to tell us that this is how God spoke to Moses, why does it also need to add that Moses would hear the voice addressing him. Don\u2019t we know that if God speaks, Moses will hear?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What, exactly, is added by this seemingly unnecessary addition?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThus God spoke to him.\u201d Okay, God spoke to him. But what is \u201cthus,\u201d the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">way<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that God speaks? Apparently, that is what the Torah means to convey when it says that \u201cMoses would hear the voice addressing him.\u201d Turns out that hearing the voice is a decision, a choice, a willful turning toward the message, and choosing beyond that to perceive the message as \u201caddressing him\u201d is a second choice: to know that the message isn\u2019t an abstraction, to whom it may concern. No, it is meant for me, right here, right now.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses was willing to hear himself as addressed. The moment demanded of him presence, responsibility, response. It demands that of us as well, all the time, everywhere. And when we turn toward the message with our full presence, our full responsiveness, then that is precisely when God speaks to But then again, maybe not. The Torah indeed tells of the completion of the Tabernacle\u2019s construction three times, but each is from a different perspective.<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first version in Exodus 40 is from the perspective of Bezalel and skilled artisans. It includes a description of the Tabernacle and all its vessels, which were created at God's command, as well as an accurate accounting of how they used the materials donated by the people. It emphasizes the physical splendor of the building, the Tabernacle as a place where the Divine Presence dwells among the people. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Tabernacle according to Bezalel, God and humanity meet when people work using the divine wisdom and talent within them. This aspect of the Tabernacle elevates the spirit not only of the creators but of everyone who looks at or experiences it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Leviticus 9, the perspective is that of Aaron and the priests, with a focus on sacrifices. The Tabernacle is filled with smoke and the smell of burnt flesh. Rabbi Yehoshua Shapira even imagines an argument between Bezalel and Aaron, in which Bezalel is furious that his beautiful Tabernacle is being dirtied so. But from the priestly perspective, the fire and smoke that fill the Tabernacle express the aspiration to elevate the most material and violent aspects of life in Divine service.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Numbers 7, the princes each bring the same gift, an inventory of items needed \u00a0for the continuous functioning of the Tabernacle. They represent the majority of the people, they work together without competition, and care about the daily functioning of the community. Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi (quoted in the introduction to Ein Ya'akov) claimed that the command to bring regular sacrifices is the most important verse in the Torah. For some, they are insufferably long, hours and hours of waiting to snap that one fuzzy picture of that one special person among hundreds or thousands that you came for. Does everyone really need their name called? Can't we cut to the chase here?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar feeling of futility might fill you as you read today's chapter. Do we really need all this repetition, everyone asks? Are we going to go through that whole list again?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both cases, the frustration is a question of perspective taking. Prince #8 wasn't bored by his own gift- for him, it was the moment he had been waiting for. He wouldn't give up on it for the world. For Prince #2, though, it already seemed rather redundant. At graduation, no one would want their own loved one's moment cut short. Just those of all those other guys.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, as Rabbi Hanoch Teller pithily puts it, to the other guy, YOU are the other guy. The ability to recognize and honor that insight is an essential part of creating a community. Ideally, every member of a community would feel genuine joy at the joy of another. But even when that's not possible, the most minimal requirement of community building is the willingness of each member to suffer boredom so that another can celebrate. If you're not willing to do that, you don't have a community. You have a large group of very fidgety individuals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Jewish people ready their camp, this is the lesson we learn from the longest, most repetitive, most boring chapter in the Torah. So take a deep breath, sit back, and savor your boredom.
