The encampment was set up like a giant plus sign. The Mishkan was in the middle surrounded by the Levites. To the north of the Mishkan were the tribes of Dan, Asher, and Naphtali. To the east was Judah, Issaschar, and Zebulon. To the south was Reuben, Simeon, and Gad. To the west was Ephraim, Benjamin and Menashe.

The breakdown of the tribes seems a little off. The sons of Leah were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issaschar and Zebulon. Zilpah had Gad and Asher, Bilhah had Dan and Naphtali, and Rachel had Joseph and Binyamin. The breakdown needed to be split into four groups of three to reach twelve. The grouping of Rachel was easy as she had three tribes- Benjamin, and Joseph's two sons Ephraim and Menashe. The other groupings were a little more complicated with Leah having five kids and the two concubines with two each.

Reuben as the initial first born could not be juxtaposed with Judah, the eventual leader of the people. They are split up. Levi is not included in the count, so he is left out. So the first group starts in age order with Reuben and Simeon, skips Levi and cannot have Judah. It would be odd to leave Judah with sons of a different mother, so he gets to be with his younger brothers Issaschar and Zebulon, continuing the age order. Reuben still needs one more, so Gad, the first born of Zilpah, goes to his group and Asher is split off with his other two brothers from Bilhah.

Why do Bilhah’s children stay together,and Zilpah’s are the ones that are split? There are two possible answers. The first is that Zilpah was Leah’s maidservant, so it makes sense that one of her sons goes with a group of Leah’s children. Her other son then matches with the other maidservant children. Another possible answer is that Bilhah is Rachel’s maidservant. Because Rachel was Jacob’s favorite, her maidservant’s children are given the honor of being kept together.

If this is only ordered in the second year- how did the people march before? The structure of the tribes is now part of the transition into moving to the land. The tribes will be split when they enter, so God is starting the process by splitting them up now.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo16-camp.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1226,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo16-camp.jpg","2048x2048-width":1907,"2048x2048-height":1522
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo16-camp.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1226,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo16-camp.jpg","2048x2048-width":1907,"2048x2048-height":1522
Ruth Fogelman was born in England and has lived in Jerusalem’s Old City for most of her life. Precisely in this silent, unmarked place, the voice of God will resound.

image: kamin Jaroensuk/shutterstock

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/shutterstock_419101156.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":594,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/shutterstock_419101156.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":791
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/shutterstock_419101156.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":594,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/shutterstock_419101156.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":791
Ruth Fogelman was born in England and has lived in Jerusalem’s Old City for most of her life. Abraham Lincoln captured this very sentiment when he said, “Standing as I do, with my hand upon this staff, and under the folds of the American flag, I ask you to stand by me so long as I stand by it.” Jews around the world are moved by the blue and white on thousands of tiny Independence Day flags, the flag that lays on the shoulders of an Israeli Olympic medalist, or one draped on the coffin of a hero. It is no wonder, that each tribe had a flag on the ancient wilderness journey.

The flag not only demarcated where to camp, it also created a sense of purpose, stability and togetherness, especially when times were difficult. Perhaps there were times when the Jews of the ancient desert community saw their flags as reminders of a punishment that seemed to last indefinitely. One wonders, at these times, why each tribe had a flag but there was no flag for the entire camp to offer a sliver of hope and direction? The clouds of glory may have been the ephemeral flag of the community, a reminder in the sky of transcendence.

image: <a
