After the curses and blessings, the book of Leviticus ends with what seems like a pretty technical chapter. Chapter 27 discusses different cases when someone promises to donate something to the Mishkan or Temple. After chapter 25, it seemed like the book had moved beyond the Mishkan and shifted back to general topics and moved towards the next step of entering the land. Why is this the last chapter of the book? If anything, this chapter should have appeared earlier on after the discussion of the sacrifices. To answer this question, return to the very beginning of the book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Leviticus opens with the specific rules regarding bringing a sacrifice.\u00a0 One must select from a specific animal that is a certain number of years old, etc. Each sacrifice had its own rules and regulations. But what if someone did not want to follow those rules? What if someone wanted to give their own sacrifice? God answered that question with the death of Aaron\u2019s two eldest sons in the middle of the book. As strict as these rules are, God knows that sometimes one cannot help but want to contribute in their own way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

That\u2019s what this last chapter is about. After all of the rules set out in the entire book, the text ultimately allows for any type of gift. No matter what that gift is, it has value to God. One could even offer to donate the equivalent of their \u201cself-worth\u201d to the temple and there is a formula for that. God wants the people to contribute in any way they can. They may want to give a specific rule-based sacrifice, but they also may want to give freely of what they have. Everything has worth. Everything has value to God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

That message is highlighted by the last two verses of the chapter:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One must not look out for good as against bad, or make substitutions for it. If one does make substitution for it, then it and its substitute shall both be holy: it cannot be redeemed. These are the commandments that God gave Moses for the Israelite people on Mount Sinai.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God does not need the people to go searching for the best of the best. God is happy to accept the gift as it is designated. The end of chapter 26 was more specific \u201cThese are the laws, rules, and instructions that God commanded\u2026\u201d (26:46), but this final chapter is simply about the <\/span>mitzvot<\/span><\/i>, commandments The mitzvot are the ones that allow the people to express their love for God in their own way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So, we have arrived at the end of the book of Leviticus. The nation of Israel is poised to finally move on from <\/span>Har Sinai<\/span><\/i> (Mount Sinai) and set out on their long journey through <\/span>Midbar Sinai<\/span><\/i> (the Wilderness of Sinai)<\/span>. <\/span><\/i>For 27 chapters we have been instructed in the details of how to offer the various sacrifices, as well as in dietary laws and laws of marriage and ritual purity. But one important reminder is given before we go:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cThese are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the people of Israel in Mount Sinai\u201d (v. 34).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

With these words Leviticus, the <\/span>torat kohanim<\/span><\/i>, draws to a close. This last verse reminds us that the mitzvot, commandments, were given <\/span>by <\/span>God <\/span>to <\/span>the children of Israel: God is the <\/span>Commander<\/span><\/em>, we the <\/span>commanded<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/i>In commenting on this verse, Rabbeinu Bahya quotes R. Ilah in the Talmud Yerushalmi (Shabbat 13:3): \u201cIf the people of Israel will perform these commandments . . . as commandments, then they are <\/span>mitzvot<\/span><\/em>;<\/span><\/i> if not they are not counted as <\/span>mitzvot<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span> In other words, the <\/span>mitzvot<\/span> take on the nature of commandedness only in the context of our relationship with God. When the Israelites are able to acknowledge, both individually and collectively, that our observance of the commandments is a vital component of the covenantal relationship that was sealed at Sinai, then, and only then, does that observance take on any meaning for us. Without that acknowledgement, the mitzvot are mere words and their observance nothing more than an empty, hollow performance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During 1993 he was Visiting Associate Professor at Yale University, and during 1996 he was the Stroum Professor of Jewish Studies and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle. During 2005, Bregman served as the Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. The Book of Leviticus concludes with commandments concerning vows and tithes and their fulfillment or redemption. The final verse of Leviticus provides an apt conclusion to the whole book: \u201cThese are the commandments that the Lord gave Moses for the Israelite people on Mount Sinai\u201d (Leviticus 27:34). The rabbinic sages often preferred to conclude their midrashic-aggadic homiletical compositions on a positive note, usually with the promise of the future messianic redemption. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Midrash Leviticus Rabbah (37:4) concludes its extensive and detailed elaboration of the Book of Leviticus with just such a \u201cmessianic peroration\u201d. \u201cRabbi Yaakov bar Avina\u2019 said: Anyone who makes a vow and fulfills (<\/span>meshalem, <\/span><\/i>literally \u2018pays\u2019) it may be assured that his prayer shall be heard. What is the Scriptural basis for this? \u2018Praise befits You in Zion, O God. Vows are paid to You. All mankind comes to You -- You who hear prayer\u2019 (Psalms 65:2-3). Rabbi Aha said: Anyone who makes a vow and fulfills it, will in the Future merit to fulfill his vow in Jerusalem, for this is what is written in Scripture: \u2018I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people\u2019 (Psalms 116:18). Where? \u2018\u2026in the courts of the house of the Lord -- in the midst of Jerusalem. Hallelujah!\u2019 (verse 19). \u2018Hallelujah! Praise the Lord for He is good. His steadfast love is eternal\u2019 (Psalms 106:1). Concluded is the Aggadah of Leviticus Rabbah!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\r\n

What better way to conclude our study of the Book of Leviticus? Hallelujah!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This portion contains one of the most vivid imprecations upon the Israelites if they do not behave as God expects, with\u00a0a powerful\u00a0description of fear: \u201cas for those of you who survive, I will bring a softness to their hearts in the land of their enemies and the voice of a leaf blown away shall pursue them and they shall flee as one flees a sword, they shall fall though there is no pursuer\u201d (26:36).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

This verse is describing sheer terror, that can\u2019t be escaped because it is everywhere, particularly in the mind.\u00a0The imaginary noise, something faint, as small as a leaf blowing can create as much of a panic as a larger and more threatening enemy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Though the causes of the fear described in this verse are illusory the fear itself is genuine and describes a terrible living situation of constant worry that one is in mortal danger.\u00a0 Is there a way to counter it?<\/p>\r\n

We can find a parallel verse. Ibn Ezra points out in his commentary to Lev 26:36\u00a0 that there is a verse which parallels it in Deuteronomy; the root of the word \u201cmorech\u201d in this verse he believes is \u201crach\u201d or \"soft\" and is used in a similar way.\u00a0 Deuteronomy 20:8 is in a section of the text discussing reasons why individuals should not go to war.\u00a0 The officers are instructed to ask the group, \u201cis there anyone who is afraid and soft of heart?\u00a0 Let him return to his home so the hearts of his brethren do not flee <\/em>as his heart does\u201d (Deut 20:8). \u00a0Not only is the term soft of heart used in both places, the term \u00a0\u201cyemas,\u201d the melting or fleeing which describes the heart in Deuteronomy but the fleeing from the sword in Leviticus showcases another similarity.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The concern in Deuteronomy seems to be that if a group includes some members who are fearful, their fright will infect the whole assembly.\u00a0Better to separate them so those who remain can stay brave and ready to fight.\u00a0However,\u00a0besides winnowing out those too fearful to be able to fight, this section contains another injunction: the necessity of calling out in peace to a city before proclaiming war on it (Deut 20:10).\u00a0Calling out in peace can only be done when there are none in the group who are fearful; peace itself seems the opposite of fear.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The beginning of the portion Behukotai describes the situation of what will be if the Israelites observe God\u2019s laws, \u201cI will grant peace in the land and you shall lie down and no one shall trouble you and I will cause respite from evil beasts in the land and the sword shall not pass over your land\u201d (Lev 26:6).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

In essence, observing the laws is a way of calling out in peace, of creating peace, of evading fear.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Parshat Bechukotai is dominated by the passage in which God speaks of the blessings that will be experienced by the Israelites if they are faithful to the covenant, and the curses they will encounter if they are not. This belief in Divine involvement in history forms the basis for the Jewish principle of hope. The choice between blessing and curse lies at the heart of Judaism as an ethic of responsibility \u2013 the opposite of a victim culture. The remarkable statement at the end of the curses \u2013 that whatever happens, God will not reject His people, explicitly refutes the Christian argument against Judaism, that God had rejected the \u201cold\u201d covenant in favour of a new one..<\/p>\r\n
