Most translate the word as leprosy, although modern leprosy does not match most of the symptoms listed in this chapter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another mystery about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara'at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that the Torah never mentions why someone would get the disease. There are a few people in Tanach that get <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara'at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Moses exhibits it as one of the early signs he\u2019s told to show to Pharoah. Miriam becomes white-faced after she and Aaron gossip about Moses in Number 12. In II Kings 5, a commander of the Aramean army has <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara'at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the prophet Elisha heals him, only to curse his steward Gehazi with the disease after Gehazi demands payment from the officer. King Azariah of the Southern Kingdom is afflicted by God, but it is unclear why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most commentators point to the Miriam story to link <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara'at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with spreading gossip. While that may link Miriam\u2019s affliction, it does not explain why the other biblical characters got the disease. Some of the rules do match modern ideas of medicine, including the idea that one who shows symptoms must go into quarantine for a certain period of time. Quarantine, though, does not seem to match the idea that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara'at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be a \u201cmoral\u201d disease caused by speaking gossip. How could such a disease be contagious?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible that the quarantine is not meant to protect other people from the disease, but rather to punish the individual by excluding them from the community. One part of the ceremony following an all-clear by the priest involves placing oil on the ear lobe, finger, and toe of the person. This action mimics the ceremony performed for the priests during their inauguration. Perhaps this is a special reminder to the healed individual that they are once again a sacred member of the community, just like a priest, and must therefore conduct themselves accordingly. So perhaps the bodily symptoms are a physical manifestation of something else.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The rabbis suggested that one who has leprosy, a \u201cmetzora,\u201d is a \u201c<em>motzei shem ra<\/em>\u201d one who \u201cbrings out an evil name\u201d (Talmud, Arachin 15b). According to that approach, we need to think about why people say bad things about others.\u00a0Sometimes, it is in an effort to call attention to themselves by bringing others down, if they don\u2019t see a more positive means to gain the interest of the community.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>So the things that are done to cure the disease must be things that will act as an antidote to the negative desires that led to the disease.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The constant repetition of the verb \u201cto see\u201d may be suggesting to us that being examined by the priest is really an opportunity for the leper to allow another human to view them, and enter into a therapeutic relationship.\u00a0<br \/>\r\nTherapist\u00a0Lori Gottlieb describes the experience of therapy in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/02\/books\/lori-gottlieb-maybe-you-should-talk-to-someone.html\">discussion of her book<\/a>: \u201cWhat they discover in therapy is that the truth of who they are \u2014 warts and all \u2014 is what\u00a0<em>draws\u00a0<\/em>people to them. That\u2019s the glue, because in that truth lies connection.\u00a0<em>I see you. You see me.<\/em>\u00a0That\u2019s a delicious feeling.\u201d Though she wasn\u2019t thinking of this portion, I imagine, the image resonates: the priest, like a therapist, sees, understands and aids the diseased, warts and all, through examination of the physical symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Part of the cure is for the priest to examine the <em>metzora<\/em> and part is to enable the afflicted to learn to reconnect with others in a healthier manner than gossiping about them.\u00a0When the person with tzara\u2019at has his clothes torn, head uncovered and lips covered they should call out \u201cunclean unclean\u201d (13:45) to warn others of their approach.\u00a0The Talmud suggests in Niddah 66b that in fact this declaration is \u201cto let the public multitudes know of his suffering so they implore in prayer mercy on his behalf.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Once the person is seen, that individual is able to ask others for what he or she needs in order to become reintegrated into the community.<\/p>\r\n<p>When the needs of the <em>metzora<\/em> become visible externally, that person can let others see them and be assisted, knowing that even when they act inappropriately, others will care and help them to change. And, frankly, boring. And yucky, and most mysteriously, utterly needless. Who needs all this information about skin, clothing and house ailments? It\u2019s tempting to suggest that this is an early beta version of WebMD, democratizing medical knowledge, allowing your average Joe Jew to be empowered with information about his condition. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the empowerment is severely limited by the Torah\u2019s insistence that the status of a \u2018<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metzora<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not so much diagnosed by the Kohen as it is created by his decision. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tzara\u2019at<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not something that can be self-diagnosed; it doesn\u2019t exist halachically until it is so declared by a licensed professional (more on this tomorrow).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rambam didn\u2019t write 59 verses about <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara\u2019at<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He recorded its laws over a span of <\/span><b>sixteen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (!) chapters. For the very courageous few who make it to the end (or those like me who skip to it), in the very last halacha, Rambam the physician explains that the hundreds of detailed laws of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara\u2019at<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which at most, theoretically, have relevance only to priests, have nothing to do with physical, medical occurrences. Even the arch-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>pashtan<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(literal, contextual interpreter) Rashbam, who almost always prefers to lay aside rabbinic Midrash in order to explicate the simple meaning of the text, admits that here, there is no such thing here as \u2018<em>pshat<\/em>\u2019. There is no credible, logical explanation other than what is offered by the rabbis (See his commentary to 13:2).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That explanation is at once well-founded and deafeningly absent in the text. A <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metzora<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains Resh Lakish, is a fellow with a social disease, a physical reflection of the moral repugnance of the \"<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">motzi shem ra\"<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Humankind\u2019s first task was to look at God\u2019s good world and to name it. The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018motzi shem ra<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does precisely the opposite, looking with narrow, jealous eyes at the world. And so gossip, idle chatter, recreational character assassination, a daily or hourly activity for many, the topic of countless posts, emails, and amusing messages of various forms, are treated by the Torah to an exorbitant level of attention, verses upon verses, laws upon laws, forcing us to spend time and pay attention to the plagues and destruction this behavior brings, and the ways to repair it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe [<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzara\u2019at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-]afflicted house never was and never will be. Why was it written? Nowhere, however, does Leviticus explain why a person might contract <em>tsara\u2019at<\/em> in the first place. On the contrary, <em>tsara\u2019at<\/em> is presented as the kind of skin condition that could just appear on the skin to anyone, at any time. The real concern is teaching the Israelites-- and the priests -- the proper ritual response to <em>tsara\u2019at<\/em>; the gradual stages of identification, quarantine, and re-entry to the community.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Midrash on Leviticus, radically redirects our focus away from the body, towards human behavior. Leviticus may not itemize the catalyst for <em>tsara\u2019at<\/em>, but elsewhere in the Bible, people who have contracted <em>tsara\u2019at<\/em> are often characters who have behaved improperly. Most famous, of course, is Miriam who seems to speak ill of her brother, engaging in <em>lashon hara'<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Midrash deepens the connection between <em>lashon hara'<\/em> (gossip, evil speech) \u00a0and <em>tsara\u2019at<\/em> and constructs <em>tsara\u2018at<\/em> as a symbol of ethical failure, emptying it of its ritual content or practical value, and instead focusing on abuses of speech and their corrosive effects on society. Whereas levitical ritual impurity laws (including <em>tsara\u2018at<\/em>) govern or protect divine holiness from human mortality, the rabbinic homilies on <em>tsara\u2018at<\/em> advocate for attention to the holiness of the human community. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harmful speech is emblematic of human actions that rupture the social fabric; it is the quintessential act with no quantifiable or visible consequences but which nevertheless wreaks havoc on the body politic. First, the condition described in the Torah simply does not fit the symptoms of leprosy. Second, the Torah applies it not only to various skin conditions but also to mildew on clothes and the walls of houses, which certainly rules out any known disease. The Rambam puts it best: \u201c<em>Tsaraat<\/em> is a comprehensive term covering a number of dissimilar conditions. Thus whiteness in a person\u2019s skin is called <em>tsaraat<\/em>. The falling off of some of his hair on the head or the chin is called <em>tsaraat<\/em>. A change of colour in garments or in houses is called <em>tsaraat<\/em>\u201d (<em>Hilkhot Tumat Tsaraat<\/em> 16: 10).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeking to identify the nature of the phenomenon, the sages sought for clues elsewhere in the Torah and found them readily available. Miriam was smitten by <em>tsaraat<\/em> for speaking badly about her brother Moses (Num. 12: 10). The Torah later gives special emphasis to this event, seeing in it a warning for all generations: \u201cBe careful with regard to the plague of <em>tsaraat<\/em> . . . Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Egypt\u201d (Deut. 24: 8-9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was, in other words, no normal phenomenon but a specific divine punishment for <em>lashon hara,<\/em> evil speech. The rabbis drew attention to the verbal similarity between <em>metsora<\/em>, a person afflicted by the condition, and <em>motzi shem ra<\/em>, someone guilty of slander<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a poetic justice Jewish tradition attributes to one of the least poetic of biblical passages, the laws relating to skin diseases and mildew. The slanderer spreads his lies in private, but his evil is exposed in public. First the walls of his house proclaim his sin, then the leather objects on which he sits, then his clothes, and eventually his skin itself. He is condemned to the humiliation of isolation:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Unclean! Unclean!\u2019 he must call out . . . Since he is unclean, he must remain alone, and his place shall be outside the camp. (Lev. 13: 45-46)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said the rabbis: Because his words separated husband from wife and brother from brother, his punishment is that he is separated from human contact and made an outcast from society (Arakhin 16b).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never say or do in private what you would be ashamed to read about on the front page of tomorrow\u2019s newspapers. His challenging quest is to inspect the wound, and not the individual. Upon seeing the discolored skin, we are told \u201che shall pronounce it unclean. <\/span><b>The flesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is unclean, it is <em>tzara\u2019at<\/em>.\u201d(v. 15) Conversely when the skin is cleared the verse tells us \u201cthe priest shall pronounce the <\/span><b>discoloration pure, it is pure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (verse 17)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The priest must have the bedside manner of the greatest physician. He is not there to judge the person for any wrongdoing, whether speaking ill of another (like Miriam who is punished with <em>tzara\u2019at<\/em>, when she criticized Moses) or many of the other sins that the Talmud mentions as resulting in <em>tzara\u2019at<\/em>. A great physician is not just one who can cure the disease, but also a person who can provide healing to a person\u2019s soul, by not judging them for the decisions that resulted in the sickness. This idea is encapsulated in the <em>Misheberach<\/em> prayer for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when we ask for both<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Refuat hanefesh urefuat haguf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(healing of the soul and healing of the body).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, even though the priest is not to act as judge and jury to the <em>metzora<\/em>, it is a solitary experience. We are told later in the chapter that as long as a person is afflicted \u201calone he shall dwell, outside of the camp.\u201d Anyone who has faced illness is ultimately alone in his\/her illness - existentially outside the camp. A wise Russian taxi driver once said to me \u201cWhen you are healthy you have many problems, when you are sick, you only have one problem.\u201d The afflicted would be happy to face the usual daily problems that he knew prior to his illness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The job of all those \u201cstill in the camp\u201d is to try to follow the Torah\u2019s challenge to the priest, and help the sick realize that she is not defined by her illness. Whether it be a visit, a call, a get-well card, or even a short text message, like the priests of old we can venture into the void and help those facing illness to feel like a regular person, with a One of the key roles of the Priest was to distinguish\u00a0<em>tahor<\/em>\u00a0from\u00a0<em>tamei<\/em>, pure from impure. Impurity meant an individual was forbidden from entering the sacred space of the Sanctuary.<\/p>\r\n<p>These categories show us the contrast between God and human beings. God is immortal, humans are mortal. God is spiritual, humans are also physical, and whatever is physical can become diseased or decayed. The things that make a person\u00a0<em>tamei<\/em>\u00a0are connected to our mortality and physicality. People who have been reminded in this way of their own mortality may not enter holy space until they are healed and purified.<\/p>\r\n<p>The parsha begins with the laws relating to childbirth \u2013 the impurity it brings, and also the command to circumcise a male child on the eighth day. It continues with laws relating to\u00a0<em>tzara\u2019at<\/em>, often translated as leprosy, but which refers to something larger than a disease, because it affects not only people but also clothes and houses. It was the task of the Priest to examine the symptoms, and to declare the person clean or unclean, or to be separated until a clearer diagnosis could be made. Maybe that\u2019s a clue as to the nature of the disease, from the point of view of the one who has it, and what sort of internal journey it\u2019s meant to be.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Leprosy of clothes?!<\/em> A lot of potential here for sermons and interpretations of all kinds.
