A perpetual fire shall be kept burning on the altar, not to go out (verse 5-6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This verse is most known nowadays as the source of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ner tamid <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>- the eternal light - placed above the ark in shuls. We will see later that the fire on the altar actually had divine origin. In fact, the two eldest sons of Aaron are thought to have died because they attempted to start the fire on the altar instead of waiting until the fire descended from heaven. Why would God command the people to keep the fire burning if the fire had a divine origin? It would have been easier for God to simply have this fire stay alight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God must have been trying to provide a special message to the people, and one that continues a theme that began from the moment of the Exodus. God does not want the people to be reliant on miracles. Miracles may be necessary at certain moments, but not as a part of the service of God. God specifically wants people to be partners in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding \u201clogs to a miraculous fire\u201d is the perfect metaphor for this. Seeing such a miracle could make someone complacent. Why should people work toward worship and devotion of God when there\u2019s an eternal divine flame just sitting there? Every day the priests had to bring wood to the altar as a reminder of this partnership. The Midrash even says that there was a special weather protective dome that the priests would place over the altar to protect it from the harsh weather of the wilderness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Midrash\u2019s tale of the iron dome over the fire is not about the ingenuity of the Israelites in the wilderness. It is about the care that the people took to protect something that should not have needed protecting. What to wear during the service, what to eat, what not to eat, where to place the blood. For non-priests in the Temple era, and for all readers since, the question of how to find one\u2019s way <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these verses is an urgent one. How to feel included? And if I find myself without a practical application, why bother to study Leviticus at all?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the annals of ancient Midrash, these questions fueled a variety of strategies for regaining access to Leviticus. On our verse, \u201cthis is the ritual,\u201d R. Hanina bar Pappa asks: what shall Israel do now that she cannot offer the sacrifices? What need is there for these verses? And in a stunning move, R. Hanina brings God\u2019s voice in response, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since you will occupy yourselves (in study) with them, I will consider it to be as if you offered them<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> God, as it were, recognizes the struggle, giving permission for Leviticus readers to abandon the practical, and to embrace a new way of reading.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a sense, this short midrash of R. Hanina captures a key element of the rabbis\u2019 transformation of Jewish life in the centuries following the Temple\u2019s destruction. As our collective gaze shifted from the Temple, the rabbis guided us towards the Torah as the focal point. Immersion in Torah study as a primary religious act -- indeed, as a very substitute for Temple worship -- redirected our spiritual longings into the endless pursuit of textual study. With a healthy dose of religious imagination, the reader of Leviticus can create pathways to the divine center.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>illustration: Alexander Dvorak \/ One of the daily services in the Temple was \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b7\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05d3\u05b6\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05df, the removal of ashes from the altar. The altar represents the connection between God and Israel (Rashi, Ex. 20:21) and resting upon it is the ,\u05e0\u05b5\u05e8 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3, the deeply symbolic \u201ceternal flame,\u201d which is never to be extinguished (Lev. 6:6). The ashes are removed to ensure that it continues to burn well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05d4, however, does not literally mean \u201cremove,\u201d but rather \u201clift\u201d; the form evolved in rabbinic Hebrew from the biblical verb \u05d4\u05b5\u05b4\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd, see Leviticus 6:3. (A \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05d4 in the biblical usage of the form is a thing \u201craised\u201d in status from profane to holy; a gift offered to God.) The term, then, hints at a significance to the lifting of the ashes in itself, beyond the functionality of removing them; the ashes, which are the residue of the offerings brought to God, retain some worth of their own. While the removal of the ashes is performed in ordinary garments, suggesting that it is not a ceremonial service but simply a functional task, the lifting of the ashes is performed in the priestly garments, though only in two of the usual four, suggesting a service which is partly functional and partly ceremonial in its own right.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><br \/>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: One of the tools they have, along with the four articles of clothing worn by all priests and the four vestments unique to the High Priest (the fringed linen tunic, the sash, the robe and the ephod), are the Urim and Tummim.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Urim and Tummim remain \u201celusive\u201d to our comprehension according to Bible scholar Baruch Levine in his commentary on Leviticus.\u00a0They seem to function as a kind of oracle to channel the word of God, but we don\u2019t have a narrative here suggesting how they are used. The burnt offering itself shall remain where it is burned upon the altar all night until morning while the fire on the altar is kept going on it.\u2026 A perpetual fire shall be kept burning on the altar not to go out\u201d (Lev. 6:1\u20136).<\/p>\r\n<p>What is the special significance of the sacrifice of the burnt offering and why is the perpetual fire mentioned in connection with the ritual for this particular sacrifice? What was the priests\u2019 role in this ritual? Why did the fire have to be kept alive?<\/p>\r\n<p>Avner Moriah\u2019s painting for <em>Parashat Tsav <\/em>suggests some of these answers. To the left is an altar with a ram topped by towering yellow flames. In the center we see Aaron, the High Priest, wearing his ritual garments. He is looking straight ahead, not down at the altar. His posture is static, as is the posture of the accompanying priests who are looking in the direction of the altar. The background is black, alluding to the fact that the fire burned all night. The priests\u2019 had to perform the sacrifice of the burnt offering twice a day \u2013 in the morning and in the evening. The morning ritual was followed by other sacrifices, so it would not have been difficult to keep the fire burning throughout the day, but the evening burnt offering was the last sacrifice of the day, so it must have been a challenge to keep the fire from dying out. Nonetheless, the priests were required to \u201cfeed wood to it\u201d (Lev. 6:5) and keep the flames alight till morning, when they had to sweep out the ashes, always attired in the proper garments as they attended to the altar.<\/p>\r\n<p>Although the Bible does not specify the significance of the perpetual fire, we understand that it symbolized the Israelites\u2019 connection with God, as we read further on: \u201cFire came forth from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering\u201d (Lev. 9:24). In other words, the first fire on the altar came from Heaven. Thus the priests were enjoined to keep the fire alive so that all the subsequent sacrifices would be consumed by these heavenly flames.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the story of the <em>Akedah<\/em>, God told Abraham to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering, but at the last moment He provided a ram for the sacrifice in place of the boy. Where is the fire's light?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">II<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes I learn that what I thought was right<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is wrong, and what I thought was plainly wrong<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is absolutely right, that noise makes song<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and melody, that darkness blazes light.<br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes I learn that grayness harbors It much be shattered.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Eating as a criterion<\/em>.
