The fire on the altar shall be kept burning, not to go out: every morning the priest shall feed wood to it, lay out the burnt offering on it, and turn into smoke the fat parts of the offerings of well-being. A perpetual fire shall be kept burning on the altar, not to go out (verse 5-6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This verse is most known nowadays as the source of the <\/span>ner tamid <\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>- the eternal light - placed above the ark in shuls. We will see later that the fire on the altar actually had divine origin. In fact, the two eldest sons of Aaron are thought to have died because they attempted to start the fire on the altar instead of waiting until the fire descended from heaven. Why would God command the people to keep the fire burning if the fire had a divine origin? It would have been easier for God to simply have this fire stay alight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God must have been trying to provide a special message to the people, and one that continues a theme that began from the moment of the Exodus. God does not want the people to be reliant on miracles. Miracles may be necessary at certain moments, but not as a part of the service of God. God specifically wants people to be partners in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Adding \u201clogs to a miraculous fire\u201d is the perfect metaphor for this. Seeing such a miracle could make someone complacent. Why should people work toward worship and devotion of God when there\u2019s an eternal divine flame just sitting there? Every day the priests had to bring wood to the altar as a reminder of this partnership. The Midrash even says that there was a special weather protective dome that the priests would place over the altar to protect it from the harsh weather of the wilderness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Midrash\u2019s tale of the iron dome over the fire is not about the ingenuity of the Israelites in the wilderness. It is about the care that the people took to protect something that should not have needed protecting. God could simply keep his fire lit without any help, but it is God\u2019s wish that people partner with God to keep God\u2019s flame alight eternally.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cCommand Aaron and his sons saying, \u2018this is the ritual of the burnt offering.\u2019\u201dAnd thus begins a dizzying array of prescriptions and instructions, directed at the priests who were responsible for the sacrifices. What to wear during the service, what to eat, what not to eat, where to place the blood. For non-priests in the Temple era, and for all readers since, the question of how to find one\u2019s way <\/span>into<\/span><\/em> these verses is an urgent one. How to feel included? And if I find myself without a practical application, why bother to study Leviticus at all?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the annals of ancient Midrash, these questions fueled a variety of strategies for regaining access to Leviticus. On our verse, \u201cthis is the ritual,\u201d R. Hanina bar Pappa asks: what shall Israel do now that she cannot offer the sacrifices? What need is there for these verses? And in a stunning move, R. Hanina brings God\u2019s voice in response, <\/span>Since you will occupy yourselves (in study) with them, I will consider it to be as if you offered them<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/i> God, as it were, recognizes the struggle, giving permission for Leviticus readers to abandon the practical, and to embrace a new way of reading.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In a sense, this short midrash of R. Hanina captures a key element of the rabbis\u2019 transformation of Jewish life in the centuries following the Temple\u2019s destruction. As our collective gaze shifted from the Temple, the rabbis guided us towards the Torah as the focal point. Immersion in Torah study as a primary religious act -- indeed, as a very substitute for Temple worship -- redirected our spiritual longings into the endless pursuit of textual study. With a healthy dose of religious imagination, the reader of Leviticus can create pathways to the divine center.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ashes\u2026were taken up<\/span><\/em>. One of the daily services in the Temple was \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b7\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05d3\u05b6\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05df, the removal of ashes from the altar. The altar represents the connection between God and Israel (Rashi, Ex. 20:21) and resting upon it is the ,\u05e0\u05b5\u05e8 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3, the deeply symbolic \u201ceternal flame,\u201d which is never to be extinguished (Lev. 6:6). The ashes are removed to ensure that it continues to burn well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05d4, however, does not literally mean \u201cremove,\u201d but rather \u201clift\u201d; the form evolved in rabbinic Hebrew from the biblical verb \u05d4\u05b5\u05b4\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd, see Leviticus 6:3. (A \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05d4 in the biblical usage of the form is a thing \u201craised\u201d in status from profane to holy; a gift offered to God.) The term, then, hints at a significance to the lifting of the ashes in itself, beyond the functionality of removing them; the ashes, which are the residue of the offerings brought to God, retain some worth of their own. While the removal of the ashes is performed in ordinary garments, suggesting that it is not a ceremonial service but simply a functional task, the lifting of the ashes is performed in the priestly garments, though only in two of the usual four, suggesting a service which is partly functional and partly ceremonial in its own right.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When humans do things, they can never be quite sure they are getting it right, even with commandments and instructions from God.<\/p>\r\n

In chapter 8, the priests are commanded to suit up, to dress the part of being priests. One of the tools they have, along with the four articles of clothing worn by all priests and the four vestments unique to the High Priest (the fringed linen tunic, the sash, the robe and the ephod), are the Urim and Tummim.<\/p>\r\n

The Urim and Tummim remain \u201celusive\u201d to our comprehension according to Bible scholar Baruch Levine in his commentary on Leviticus.\u00a0They seem to function as a kind of oracle to channel the word of God, but we don\u2019t have a narrative here suggesting how they are used. The description here and in Exodus 28:30, that they should be placed on the \u201cheart of Aaron\u201d are all we have to try to comprehend their possible use.<\/p>\r\n

Levine suggests that they may have been flat stones known as puru<\/em> in Mesopotamia and purim<\/em> in the book of Esther.\u00a0Later in Leviticus we will see the \u201cgoral<\/em>\u201d (a word used in the book of Esther along with purim<\/em>) used to send one goat to the wilderness and the other to slaughter (16:8).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

But we know that even when humans get a message, they can scramble the words or misunderstand.\u00a0Given all this authority, the ability to discern a message from God, the High Priest needs to continue to retain humility in the face of the immense power granted him now.<\/p>\r\n

When the slaughter of the ram occurs in Leviticus 8:23 the cantillation note above the word for slaughter is a shalshelet<\/em>, a rare note, one that indicates hesitation (also in Genesis 19:16, 24:12, 39:8).\u00a0In fact, the person doing the act of slaughtering is unclear too \u2013 we assume it is Aaron but it is possible to interpret it as Moses.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The hesitation and uncertainty illustrated by the shalshelet <\/em>note show a certain humility; even with all the power he has been granted, Aaron is hesitant to go ahead and make the incision.\u00a0Yet he does, and the portion ends on the note that \u201cAaron and his sons did all the things which the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses\u201d (8:36).<\/p>\r\n

The first ritual described in this parasha <\/em>is the burnt offering (the olah<\/em>) and the demand that the priests never let the fire on the altar die: \u201cThis is the ritual of the burnt offering. The burnt offering itself shall remain where it is burned upon the altar all night until morning while the fire on the altar is kept going on it.\u2026 A perpetual fire shall be kept burning on the altar not to go out\u201d (Lev. 6:1\u20136).<\/p>\r\n

What is the special significance of the sacrifice of the burnt offering and why is the perpetual fire mentioned in connection with the ritual for this particular sacrifice? What was the priests\u2019 role in this ritual? Why did the fire have to be kept alive?<\/p>\r\n

Avner Moriah\u2019s painting for Parashat Tsav <\/em>suggests some of these answers. To the left is an altar with a ram topped by towering yellow flames. In the center we see Aaron, the High Priest, wearing his ritual garments. He is looking straight ahead, not down at the altar. His posture is static, as is the posture of the accompanying priests who are looking in the direction of the altar. The background is black, alluding to the fact that the fire burned all night. The priests\u2019 had to perform the sacrifice of the burnt offering twice a day \u2013 in the morning and in the evening. The morning ritual was followed by other sacrifices, so it would not have been difficult to keep the fire burning throughout the day, but the evening burnt offering was the last sacrifice of the day, so it must have been a challenge to keep the fire from dying out. Nonetheless, the priests were required to \u201cfeed wood to it\u201d (Lev. 6:5) and keep the flames alight till morning, when they had to sweep out the ashes, always attired in the proper garments as they attended to the altar.<\/p>\r\n

Although the Bible does not specify the significance of the perpetual fire, we understand that it symbolized the Israelites\u2019 connection with God, as we read further on: \u201cFire came forth from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering\u201d (Lev. 9:24). In other words, the first fire on the altar came from Heaven. Thus the priests were enjoined to keep the fire alive so that all the subsequent sacrifices would be consumed by these heavenly flames.<\/p>\r\n

In the story of the Akedah<\/em>, God told Abraham to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering, but at the last moment He provided a ram for the sacrifice in place of the boy. Parshat Tzav continues the laws of sacrifices begun in the previous parsha, this time from the perspective of the Priests who are the ones performing the ritual. The laws of the burnt and grain offerings, sin and guilt offerings, and peace offerings, are discussed, each with its own specific method. How Aaron and his sons will be initiated into their roles as Priests is then described, before the inauguration (opening ceremony) of the service of the Sanctuary.<\/p>\r\n

Sometimes I want my money back, the price

\r\n<\/span>is thread-bare, and its fabric full of lice. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\r\n<\/span>The Sabbath bread I've eaten, slice by slice,
\r\n<\/span>is frozen solid, Lord, and though I try
\r\n<\/span>to taste Your honey and to sanctify
\r\n<\/span>Your Sabbath wine, all liquids turn to ice.
\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I've paid a lifetime's salary to rent
\r\n<\/span>a room within Your walls \u2014 unfurnished, small,
\r\n<\/span>unheated and unlit, as if the night
\r\n<\/span>had overwhelmed this house for which I've spent
\r\n<\/span>my savings, Lord \u2014 is this my home at all?
\r\n<\/span>Where is the hearth's fire? Where is the fire's light?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

II<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sometimes I learn that what I thought was right
\r\n<\/span>is wrong, and what I thought was plainly wrong
\r\n<\/span>is absolutely right, that noise makes song
\r\n<\/span>and melody, that darkness blazes light.
\r\n<\/span>Sometimes I learn that grayness harbors white
\r\n<\/span>while glazing white hides dismal gray, that long
\r\n<\/span>is really short, that weak is really strong,
\r\n<\/span>that dust and ashes suddenly ignite.
\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sometimes I learn a Sabbath suit is more
\r\n<\/span>than shabby cloth and thread, sometimes I learn
\r\n<\/span>a Sabbath meal is more than bits of ice,
\r\n<\/span>Sometimes I learn a room may have a door
\r\n<\/span>which opens to a court where altars burn

  1. The poetry of law<\/em>. Sometimes even legal texts sound poetic. The chorus \u201cthe fire on the altar is kept burning\u201d repeats itself several times in the chapter.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Contagious<\/em>! \u201c...the LORD\u2019s offerings by fire. Anything that touches these shall become holy\u201d (verse 11).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. A small commission.<\/em> The priest who deals with the preparation of the sin offering gets to keep the meat (verse 19).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Polishing the non-porous; breaking the porous<\/em>. Impurity has a physical presence, to which every material responds differently. Copper and bronze can be polished and purified. Clay pottery absorbs it - and so can\u2019t be purified. It much be shattered.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Eating as a criterion<\/em>.
