\u201cHe poured some of the anointing oil upon Aaron\u2019s head and anointed him, to consecrate him\u201d (verse 12). Chapter 8 of Leviticus is almost like the inauguration ceremony laid out by God at the end of Exodus. A key part of the ceremony is the pouring of the anointing oil on the vessels of the Mishkan, and most importantly, on Aaron\u2019s head. The anointing oil acts as the link between the vessels and Aaron. Just as the vessels act as the conduit between the people and the service to God, so too does Aaron connect the people and the divine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jacob is the first person in Tanach to use oil as an anointing medium. In Genesis 28:18, he pours oil over the stones that acted as his resting place when he had the dream about the angels. Jacob\u2019s action is not mandated by God but is done spontaneously. Jacob repeats this ceremony after speaking with God near Paddan-Aram. Sfrono gives two reasons for Jacob\u2019s actions in Genesis 28. Either he poured the oil to set up the pillar as a future altar or he did it so he could recognize the spot when he returned later. The first answer is a clear link between the actions of Jacob and the later actions of Moses. It is possible that this answer is anachronistic and is informed by what Moses does, as the text does not provide any indication of how Jacob knew how to do this. The second answer describes the oil as a marker. In this reading, the anointing of the Mishkan and Aaron with the oil is a way for God to mark the vessels and the kohen as important focal points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The pouring of the oil on Aaron confers a special level of holiness as well. In two chapters, Aaron is told he cannot mourn for his sons and must leave the Mishkan \u201clest you die, for God\u2019s anointing oil is upon you.\u201d (10:7). The Mishnah in Horayot 3:4 explains that a high priest who was not anointed with the special oil cannot bring the special bull offering on Yom Kippur. The oil, therefore, had a significance that was lost when the oil itself ceased to be used. The priests were not the only ones anointed with the special oil. Later in the times of the kings, the oil is also used to anoint the king. Samuel uses it to anoint Saul and David in I Samuel 10 and 16. After David is anointed, he immediately begins to experience divine prophecy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What does it mean to live a life of sacred service? To commit oneself to serve, to mediate between the congregation and God? Leviticus chapter 8 articulates a stark vision, laying bare the aspirational opportunities and acute threats of communal service. To prepare Aaron and his sons to act as priests, Moses ceremonially shows them the contours of their commitment. In extreme fashion, he teaches them to surrender their personal lives for the higher goals of the mishkan. He places special clothing on them, carefully circumscribing them in sacred garb, tying the belts around them. The same oil that Moshe sprinkles on the vessels of the mishkan, he sprinkles on the newly minted high priest. And he \u201cbrings them forward (\u05d5\u05d9\u05e7\u05e8\u05d1)\u201d to serve in the same way that he brings forward the bull and the ram as sacrifice. Finally, Moses instructs them that they must remain within the sanctuary throughout the period of ordination. Their food will be sacred; they must eat it at the opening of the tent.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is high drama, a carefully choreographed spectacle, carried out by Moses but instructed by God. And although the congregation is assembled to watch, the priests are the real audience. Moses is schooling them in the lesson he has learned on the job. To serve the congregation and to fill the critical space between the masses and God means to relinquish the hold on one\u2019s personal space, needs, and wants. It means ceding control of one\u2019s personal narrative, loosening the grip on one\u2019s family ties.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But it also means learning to live a life that is totally fused with the sacred. Where one\u2019s every move -- down to the most mundane of acts and moments-- is aligned with divine connection. Serving the community in this capacity can bridge the yawning gap between the ordinary and the sacred and help others meet their need to elevate themselves, reach out to God, and deepen their awareness of the transcendent. What an august and majestic moment it must have been! Gathering the people together at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, with Aaron and his sons in waiting, Moses brings out the anointing oil, the priestly vestments, the bulls for sacrifice, the basket of matzot and engages in an elaborate ritual of washing, clothing, and anointing the priestly family who will make the offerings on behalf of the children of Israel from that day forth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

All in silence!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Anyone who has witnessed the coronation of the Kings and Queens of England, for example, or the ceremonies launching a new Pope, or the inauguration of the President of the United States, are accustomed to a great many words. Those words make explicit the intended message of the moment \u2013 what is signified, and how we are to understand that actions transpiring before us.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But all those words, in addition to being a bit coercive (in telling us what we must think or how we ought to understand what is happening) also reveal a lack of trust. Someone doesn\u2019t have faith in the power of ritual, its capacity to enlist the imagination, its magical ability to mean for each observer something slightly different, a distinct message designed uniquely for each particular person.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Torah doesn\u2019t make that mistake. Instead, it describes without comment, the glorious and dramatic events of the initiation and consecration of Aaron and his children into the posts of High Priest and officiants for ancient Israel\u2019s sacrifices. And it respects the individuals \u2013 those in attendance then, and those reading the texts today \u2013 to bring the entire person to the moment. Each of us is given leave, indeed, is forced, to read our own meanings into this sacred transition. And in refraining from comment, the Torah expects us to step into the ritual and bestow precisely the significance we each need to derive from the moment for our own spiritual thriving.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The lesson is clear: a minimum of preaching, and a maximum of interpretation. A verbal tsimtsum<\/em> (withdrawing) to make room for expansive soul formation. That has been the genius of priestly Judaism, bestowed through its heirs, the rabbis, to the Jewish people across the ages. After the description of the Tabernacle\u2019s construction in the book of Leviticus, we are told of the ceremony that inaugurates Aaron and his sons into the priesthood (ch 8). Moses dresses them in the priestly vestments and anoints them with the sacred oil, after which they bring special inaugural offerings. They are then secluded inside the Tabernacle for a period of seven days. According to the Talmud Yerushalmi, these seven days parallel the week of Moses\u2019 ascent to Mount Sinai, as described in the book of Exodus (24:16).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

To this description of the inauguration the Torah appends the words, \u201cAs was done on this day, so the Lord has commanded to be done, to make atonement for you\u201d (Lev. 8:34). The <\/span>Sifra <\/span><\/i>(cited by Rashi) derives from this verse that there are two other situations in which these seven days of seclusion are to continue to be observed: the week leading up to Yom Kippur, and the days prior to the burning of the red heifer, which purifies one who has become ritually impure through contact with a dead body.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Mishna (<\/span>Para<\/span><\/i> 3:1; <\/span>Yoma <\/span><\/i>8a\u2013b;) states that during the week leading up to Yom Kippur, the High Priest is purified using the ashes of the red heifer, a process that takes seven days to complete. This may suggest that, besides evoking the inauguration days, this period also serves to shore against the risk that contact with a corpse may have rendered the High Priest impure, and therefore unfit for service. Should this have happened, perhaps without his knowledge, the week of separation and the ritual of the red heifer would be enough to purify him again. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. A long story.<\/em> 3 chapters! This is the longest continuous narrative in the book of Leviticus.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Moses.<\/em> Moses does everything here, or almost everything. He bathes, dresses, salughters, sprinkles - 56 different verbs are attributed to him! Note, for instance how the raising up of the sacrifice is managed: \u201cHe placed all these on the palms of Aaron and on the palms of his sons, and elevated them as an elevation offering before the LORD\u201d (verse 27). Even what is placed on the priests\u2019 hands is lifted by Moses. By the way, this is the last time that Moses will be involved in any of this.
