Only certain animals can be sacrificed, and among these animals there were certain rules as to the ages and genders. Notably, God instructs that sacrifices must be without blemish:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offering is a burnt offering from the herd, you shall make your offering a male without blemish. You shall bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, for acceptance in your behalf before God\u201d (verse 3).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hebrew word for \u201cwithout blemish\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The word first appears early in Genesis describing Noah: \u201cThis is the line of Noah.\u2014Noah was a righteous man; he was without blemish in his age; Noah walked with God\u201d (Gen. 6:9). There is a famous dispute whether Noah was righteous and without blemish for his generation or was he independently righteous and without blemish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps God is presenting a similar quandary for the sacrifices themselves. Are the sacrifices the ultimate expression of holiness and connection with God or are they simply the right venue for the Israelites in that generation? On a more practical level, the Torah may be using the word for these sacrifices as Noah was the first person in the Tanach to build and bring sacrifices on an altar: \u201cThen Noah built an altar to God and, taking of every pure animal and of every pure bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar\u201d (Gen. 8:20). It was therefore a particularly challenging Biblical book on which to compose an entire work of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">midrash aggadah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, literary elaborations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, toward the end of the classical rabbinic period in the Land of Israel, in the 5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century CE, some daring <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>darshan<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compiled the homiletic work that has come to be known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>VaYikra\u2019 Rabbah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Leviticus Rabbah). This compilation of 37 separate, highly structured, homilies represents a new departure in the genre of midrashic literature that came to be known in modern times as the \u201cliterary homily,\u201d to distinguish it from the pre-literary, oral traditions from which it was apparently composed. This clearly literary form of the midrashic homily may also be referred to as the \u201ccomposite homily,\u201d since its primary defining characteristic is that it is composed of clearly defined, composite parts arranged in a generally standardized order: Proems (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petihta\u2019ot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), body of the sermon (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guf ha-derashah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and peroration (s<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iyyum<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proem was apparently originally an oral homiletical form of the synagogue sermon that preceded and introduced the Torah reading, which it leads to and concludes with, having begun with a \u201cverse from afar\u201d usually taken from the Prophets or Writings. The \u201cbody of the sermon\u201d is an exegetical section usually interpreting the first verse of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Scriptural lection on which the homily is based, according to the \u201cTriennial Cycle\u201d of Torah Readings that was customary in the Land of Israel until the early Middle Ages. The peroration provides a kind of \u201chappy ending\u201d to the entire homily. When mentioning the messianic future it is referred to in contemporary research as a messianic peroration.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The composition of the first \u201cliterary\u201d or \u201ccomposite\u201d homily in Leviticus Rabbah is composed of five proems (sections 1-6), and a part beginning \u201cWhat is written prior to the Biblical pericope (on which the homily is based) \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah Ketiv Le-Ma\u2019alah Min Ha-\u2018Inyyan<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>?\u201d<\/em> (sections 7-8). This links the beginning of the Book of Leviticus with what came before, the Building of the Desert Tabernacle (Ex. 38:21 to the end of Exodus). This is followed by a more standard \u201cbody of the sermon\u201d (sections 9-13), and finally a \u201cmessianic peroration (section 14): \u201cFor in this world the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shekhinah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is revealed only to individuals, but in the World to Come, what is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.40.5?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">written<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Why the repetition, and why should it matter so much?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The previous books of the Torah, like religious literature the world over, are filled with grand drama, huge breakthroughs in which cosmos is mustered out of chaos, the divine erupts amidst pervasive evil, and a series of history changing miracles birth a new nation who see themselves as called into being to serve the Divine in intimate relationship. Like any young love, there is a maximum of passion and deed, and not a whole lot of room for words.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the flush heat of passion subsides. If we\u2019re lucky, and if we work hard at it, then the real blossom of love comes in a cooler shade: words, information, shared insights and aspirations. Love is built in the prosaic valleys of life, seeking to hold on to the sparks gleaned on the heights, but at the same time, fashioning a connection more enduring and less dramatic.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter the Torah\u2019s most core book. Our ancient rabbis, when they wove midrashim around Leviticus, just called it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sifra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the book. Because it is the book par excellence, of The Book itself. It offers the cool practice that allows the embers of Sinai to remain smoldering, allows the intense bond between God and Israel to simmer in the daily offerings of morning, midday and night. In the waning and waxing of the moon, we see the radiance of God\u2019s love, and in the swirling cycles of the calendar, we act out the seasonal manifestations of our journey toward the Promise.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t stay on the peak forever, can\u2019t remain eternally teenagers in love. But we can speak the words that keep our memories alive and strong, shape our values, and point us toward eternity, one day at a At first glance, God\u2019s speech is an uneventful beginning to the book, one of many such occurrences in the life of Moses. And yet, the verb \"He called\u201d is highly unusual as far as divine utterances go. Here, God does not just speak (more common); He <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calls<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He does not communicate to all, but to Moses alone. And He does not project the divine voice outwards, but keeps it inside the tent, an intimate whisper into Moses\u2019 ear.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rabbis of the Midrash on Leviticus read this verse with a full stop before the particular legislation that follows. Never mind for now the laws of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offering; the primary wisdom is hidden in that opening moment when God reaches out to Moses. One midrash inflects the verse as a kind of nudge on God\u2019s behalf, as if to say, \u201cNu, Moses! Enough with the humility! For too long, you have stood off to the side rather than step up to the plate. At the sea, I had to coax you to raise your staff. Even at Mount Sinai, you needed an invitation to ascend. I am calling to you now inside the tent of meeting, because it is you and only you who can hear My voice. Step up, please. Come closer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This midrashic reading startles because we are accustomed to valorizing Moses\u2019 humility. We regularly learn from his example how to think a bit less of ourselves, how to wear our accomplishments with less fanfare, how to take up less space in a room. And we will always need this lesson, as human nature goes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, the Midrash reminds us that humility can run in excess. A healthy awareness of our limitations-- if nourished unchecked-- can slide into self-criticism, self-doubt, and in the realm of leadership, failure to act. Assuming timely leadership means showing up, taking action and hearing the call \u2014 even when we may not feel like we are the expert, or even the best person for the job. \u00a0Ultimately, acting as a leader should not be an exercise of the ego but seizing the opportunity to fill a niche demand just when it is needed. This portion is not for the faint of heart. God explains that you \u201cshall slaughter it on the northern side of the altar... shall dash its blood upon the altar, around... cut it into its [prescribed] sections, with its head and its fat, and the kohen shall arrange them on top of the wood...\u201d (Leviticus 1: 11-13). Leviticus continues, explaining the detailed steps for disposition of the sacrifices\u2019 entrails, and how to incise a sacrifice without tearing it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If God only wanted the Israelites to sacrifice animals as sin offerings, why jump through multiple hoops to get the job done? Did God truly care about which side of the alter the animal was slaughtered on? Or that it was important to lean \u201cforcefully\u201d upon the head of the burnt offering? (Leviticus 1:4) Undoubtedly, just killing the animal would be much easier.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By mandating these time-consuming, manually intensive, emotional steps for animal sacrifice, God teaches that repenting of sin is not merely about checking off a to-do list. Just as Glinda required Dorothy to learn through her journey, God teaches through Leviticus' detailed Korbanot instructions that it is not about a means to an end, but rather that there is value in the journey.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we obviously no longer practice animal sacrifice. However, Leviticus' lessons still elucidate the meaning of being a Jew. When we pray the V\u2019Ahavta, \u201cyou shall love,\u201d he paragraph after the Shma\u2019 prayer, it is insufficient to mouth the words; instead, we must focus on what we do each day to love God with \u201call our heart, all our soul, and all our might.\u201d It is not enough to affix a mezuzah to the doorpost of your home; instead, we must make an effort to bring the words of God into our daily lives inside of our homes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May we continually remember to appreciate, not the end goal, but rather our mindful journey on that yellow brick Where once our ancestors offered animals, now, lacking a Temple, we offer words. Yet the essential act is the same in both cases: a giving of self to God. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Judaism, to love is to give. Jewish marriage is consecrated by the gift of a ring. It is not that the recipient needs to receive. It is that love is emotion turned outward. Love is the sacrifice of self to other, and the result is k-r-v, the \u201ccoming close\u201d that is the root of the word <em>korban<\/em>, \u201csacrifice.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of Leviticus, the book containing many of the details of the sacrifices, the Torah states, \u201cWhen a person offers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of you <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an offering to the Lord\u201d (Lev. 1:2). The Hebrew name of Leviticus, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vayikra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, means \u201cHe called unto\u201d, but it can also mean \u201cHe read\u201d, as if the name itself is an invitation to read new meaning into old texts and practices. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacrifice, on its face, is an ancient practice that has very little relevance to our life today. It is usually referred to as an almost pathetic effort made by mortals to appease the great forces of the universe with their meager offerings. But the notion of sacrifice is much more sophisticated and interesting. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacrifice is a way for us, mortals, to gain a sense of agency. It is a tool for cosmic intervention, a way in which we do our share in restoring the cosmic balance. The seemingly strict and endless rules governing which animals, which gender, and even where on the altar they may be brought, can seem frustratingly purposeless. In his introduction to his commentary on Leviticus, the Provencal exegete, Joseph Ibn Kaspi (c. 1280-1340), announced an extended (eighteen chapter-long) hiatus, since, following Maimonidean rationalism, the entire order of the sacrifice was merely a concession to Israel\u2019s pagan ways, so the particulars do not really matter. And yet, the Torah presents verse-upon-verse of sacrificial detail and sacrificial structure, for readers to contend with.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the details of the Levitical sacrifice order can be exhausting, there is a striking message in its structure. The Priestly Torah, as its wont, demands that the regulations are immutable. Sacrifice is a serious business and not a free-for-all: One cannot just bring female cattle for a burnt <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offering if that is what happens to be in stock, nor can the priest offer the he-goat \u2013 another option for the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 on the altar\u2019s south side, merely because it is more convenient.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text conveys a strong sense of order, but it is a certain kind of modular order, where there are options to choose from, based on economic bracket and other criteria. If there is any defining feature of Leviticus, it is not an unbending insistence for details, but a menu in which to build a sacrificial meal. Remember the cloud that covered the Tabernacle at the end of the book of Exodus? Moses, who was prevented then from entering the Tabernacle, is called to it now.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Small alef<\/em>. The last letter of the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayikra<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e7\u05e8\u05d0, is an <em>alef<\/em>, and it\u2019s written smaller than the other letters. It\u2019s a special phenomenon - a change in the form of a letter - though by no means unique, first in the manuscripts, which then followed in print. What\u2019s the reason? Good question - there are all sorts of answers.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He shall lay his hand<\/em>. The person who brings the offering lays their hand on the head of the sacrifice, and thus designates it to be their sacrifice, or if you prefer, makes it a \u201csubstitute,\u201d or a messenger, as it were, who will bear their sins and grievances.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>If there\u2019s no sin - then why atone<\/em>? The burnt offering was not brought in response to sin, but bringing it does atone for its owner, \u201cHe shall lay his hand upon the head of the burnt offering, that it may be acceptable in his behalf, in expiation for him\u201d (verse 4). Perhaps the key is in the word \u201cacceptable\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nirtza<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The offering gives its bringer an experience of being acceptable, and close to God.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Pleasing odor<\/em>.
