In order to expiate a sin that transpired between an individual and God, a sacrifice is required. The dedication of an animal or grain constitutes \u201cgiving\u201d something back to God, whose honor has been impugned by the actions of the perpetrator. However, it is less clear why a social crime such as theft, where another human being was victimized, in addition to restoring the object illegally obtained, and paying a fine (v. 23-4,) should <\/span>also <\/span><\/i>require an offering (v. 25.) Yet in v. 21-2, the text defines even venal crimes as \u201ca trespass against God,\u201d thus implying\u00a0 that transgressions against one\u2019s fellow are also to be viewed as theological violations:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When a person sins and commits <\/span>a trespass against God<\/em> <\/span>\u2014by 1) dealing deceitfully with another in the matter of a deposit or a pledge or 2) through robbery, or by 3) defrauding another, or by 4) finding something lost and lying about it; 5) if one swears falsely regarding any one of the various things that someone may do and sin thereby\u2026 Then that person shall bring to the priest, as a penalty to God, a ram without blemish from the flock, or the equivalent, as a guilt offering (verses 21-22,25).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashi, on verse 21, offers an insight that addresses this question:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2026Whoever lends or borrows money or does business with another [cases that do not appear among the Torah\u2019s examples] does it as a rule only in the presence of witnesses or by a document; therefore when he repudiates the matter, he repudiates the witnesses or the document.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But he who deposits something with his neighbor does not wish any living soul to know about it except the Third Being (<\/span>God<\/span><\/em>) who is between them; therefore, when he repudiates the deposit, he is repudiating the Third Being who is between them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

While the five cases that are specifically listed in above are categorized as situations where the <\/span>only<\/em> <\/span>entity corroborating the claims of the victim is the Divine, the implication is that God is also present in the other scenarios that typically feature witnesses and documents. The terminology that is used for a Jewish court bears this out (Ex. 22:7): \u201cIf the thief is not caught, the owner of the house shall depose before God,<\/span> and deny laying hands on the other\u2019s property.\u201d Rashi, there, explains \u201cdepose before God\u201d as referring to the judges, \u201cto put his case against the other and to swear unto him that he has not put forth his hands against his property.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is probably easy for someone with criminal intent to overlook the participation of an incorporeal God when there are neither witnesses nor documents. The Torah emphasizes that God\u2019s ubiquitous presence in all legal procedures should never be taken for granted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Those who attempt to suggest that a strict dichotomy exists between commandments regarding God, as opposed to one\u2019s fellow man, should think \u201cBut if one\u2019s means do not suffice for a sheep, that person shall bring to God as the penalty for that of which one is guilty, two turtledoves or two pigeons\u2014one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering\u201d (verse 7).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The ability to bring a sin offering was an essential part of asking for forgiveness in ancient Israel. The proper animal to bring is a sheep, but God does not want anyone to feel priced out of the sin offering. Therefore, someone who cannot afford a sheep is allowed to bring two turtle doves. Someone who cannot afford even the two doves is instructed to bring a tenth of an ephah of flour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Working backwards- why does someone bring a tenth of an ephah? Ibn Ezra explains that this was the measurement of one day\u2019s worth of flour. Therefore one was required to at least give up a day's meal for the sacrifice. Why two birds? Ibn Ezra explains here that one bird is for the offering itself and the second bird is for the fats that were burned on the altar. This way the two birds make up for the two sacrifice functions derived from the one sheep and one is burnt entirely and one is the gift to the priest. The Sifra explains that if a person only had a sheep at home, but if they used it for the sacrifice they would have to borrow money for daily expenses, then they can bring the doves instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rabbi Soloveitchik explains that the two birds are linked. Even though one actually is sacrificed as a burnt offering and one as the sin offering, they are considered a pair. Therefore, if someone pledged the first bird as a burnt offering and then died before designating the second bird as a sin offering, the heirs must still bring the second bird. Normally, we do not require that heirs bring a sin offering for a deceased person as the offering could no longer atone for sins. In this case, however, the two birds are considered one single offering split into two types.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sometimes, when we have strayed from our core values, we know it right away. We can feel it in the moment: as the words tumble out, as we cross over a threshold, or make a commitment to action. But often, deep self-awareness comes in waves and stages. We may discover it on our own, in retrospective reflection; or we may be called into awareness by another\u2019s accusation or revelation. If we are lucky, we learn this truth by another\u2019s loving, gentle nudging; when they hold up a mirror for us to see ourselves. And then we can acknowledge where we truly want to be. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The \u201cguilt offering,\u201d the <\/span>asham<\/span><\/em>, was the closing moment for this process. The public but intimate ceremony to acknowledge where you may have failed to live up to your values. More significant, perhaps -- the chance to commit to better self-alignment in the future. To close the gap between our values and our behavior.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In exquisite fashion, the Bible takes pains to emphasize how important this moment can be-- and to make sure that no Israelite was excluded from its healing power. Twice, accommodations are made for those who could not afford the (expensive) offering of a sheep or goat. If a goat was beyond your means, you could offer less costly pigeons or turtle-doves. And if that exceeded your budget, a meal offering was more than enough. When the hard work of self-reckoning is done, there is no room for exclusion or stigma in the sanctuary.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What distinguishes an <\/span>Adam<\/span><\/em> from a <\/span>Nefesh<\/span><\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A curious dichotomy appears throughout <\/span>Leviticus<\/span>. Some activities connected to the sacrificial order (<\/span>korbanot<\/span><\/em>) feature the noun <\/span>adam<\/span><\/em>, while others\u2014our chapter in particular\u2014utilize <\/span>nefesh<\/span><\/em>, inviting the question: What distinguishes one from the other?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Philologically speaking, <\/span>adam<\/span><\/em> derives from <\/span>adamah<\/span><\/em>, earth, while <\/span>nefesh<\/span><\/em> means breath\u2014as in the verb <\/span>vayinafash<\/span><\/em> (Exodus 31:17); literally, to take a breather. The two come together most notably in Genesis 2:7, which describes God\u2019s creation of humankind from earthly matter into which He then inspired a breath of life. (The biblical\u00a0<\/span>nefesh<\/em> <\/span>is synonymous with both <\/span>neshama<\/span><\/em> and\u00a0<\/span>ru\u2019ah<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/i>)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps this is the distinction we see: <\/span>Adam<\/span><\/em> signifies the physical dimension of man, while <\/span>nefesh<\/span><\/em> designates his spirituality.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When addressing the voluntary offering of sacrifice (1:2), bodily impurity (5:3, 7:21, 13:2), or the infliction of corporal injury (24:17, 21), the Torah speaks of <\/span>adam<\/span><\/em>; however, when speaking of the human proclivity to sin (4:2, 27; 5:1), swear falsely (5:4), or embezzling from the tabernacle (7:27) \u2014 all spiritual failings\u2014it utilizes <\/span>nefesh<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Just as body and soul unite at birth, they separate at death, each returning to its point of origin. The leading voice of political commentary at the beginning of the 21st century was probably Jon Stewart (and Rush Limbaugh on the right - but with noticeably less cultural sway). If the core message of his nightly searing commentary had to be boiled down to a few words, it would be this: \u201cthe following people are hypocrites,\u201d and then they would cue their patented video clips demonstrating the hypocrisy of said individuals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The jarring contradictions were hilariously head-spinning but were also instructive about the necessity for the electorate to hold their representatives accountable. These segments resonated so fiercely with audiences across the country because hypocrisy cuts against our most basic sensibilities about the importance of honesty; for our words to match our\u00a0<\/span>actions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Fast forward 18 years and pretty much the only thing that this divided nation can still agree on is that the biggest contemporary sin is: hypocrisy. Yet this is not a new phenomenon; loathing insincere words that don\u2019t match actions goes back 3,000 years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Leviticus 5:23-25 talks about an individual that unjustly took for himself the property of his fellow. What is this man to do when he is ready to repent? He has to return the property to the owner, and he must also bring a sin-offering to the Temple for expiation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It makes sense why the property needs to be returned to the aggrieved party, but why the necessity to also bring a sin offering on top of that?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As it is stated in Job: \u2018A hypocrite shall not come before\u201d God. God cares about actions that demonstrate the heart of a person, not the words that are used to paper over their backsliding.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The book of Exodus dedicates half of its chapters to the Israelites building the Mishkan from scratch, the abode to house the presence of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Leviticus, on the other hand, focuses on the importance of the internal work that must be done, first and foremost, before one can even consider entering into that newly-built presence of   1. Impurity and oath-breaking<\/em>. This is the common denominator of all the instances where a sin offering of varying value (<\/span>oleh veyored<\/span><\/em>). Are they somehow connected? Perhaps in both behaviors there is a violation of a value that is relevant to a relationship with God. Impurity violates the purity\u00a0 that is the entryway to holiness. And violating an oath is to violate the name of God, since the essence of a vow is a promise made in God\u2019s name.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Forgetfulness.<\/em> Does the obligation to bring a sacrifice for what we may have forgotten send the message that \u201cforgetting is no excuse\u201d or rather, the message: \u201cyou forgot? Don\u2019t worry - you can atone!\u201d?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. No additives<\/em>. As opposed to the offerings (<\/span>menachot<\/span><\/em>), the vegetable sin sacrifice is as basic as possible, just <\/span>solet<\/span><\/em>, \u201cchoice flour,\u201d\u00a0 \u201che shall not add oil to it or lay frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering\u201d (verse 11).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Trespass (me\u2019ilah<\/em>); a sin which demands a guilt offering<\/em>.
