The older rabbi told his younger colleague, “You have to be a good actor.”

The younger rabbi had not expected it, and yet there is truth that we all need to play roles at times, just as the priest is carefully costumed for his role as atoner for the people. Perhaps Moses, who we know to be the “most humble of all men” (Numbers 12:3) felt himself unable to play a role, unable to do something not purely in his emotional range. I think of Moses as like Cordelia in Shakespeare's King Lear who was unable to “heave my heart into my mouth” (i.i.92-93). Both were unwilling to dissemble whether it accrued to their benefit or not. Aaron, who we know as a "pursuer of peace" (Pirkei Avot 1:12). was someone more He is told to take a list of ritual objects and then to bring Aaron forward: "ve-et Aharon ubanav takriv." The verb used here, takriv, means "bring closer" but is also the same one used as for offerings, as though Aaron and his sons are being offered by Moses. In Leviticus, when this ritual is carried out, the point is even sharper: in 8:1, Moses is told to take a whole list: Aaron, his sons, their clothing, the oil, the animals…

Reading Exodus 29, it is clear that Moses is the actor and Aaron and sons, the new Cohanim (priests) are the objects, just one of many new vessels of the Temple. Moses washes them, clothes them, pours oil on them. Eventually, he sprinkles the blood of the sacrifices on them. Perhaps this can serve as a warning to potential future leaders: many may seek power, but it is only suited to those who are willing to give up something of themselves to become public property.

In fact, the only active action the new Cohanim take in this chapter is to put their hands on the heads of the sacrificial animals, symbolizing a transfer of personal sin to the animal. This might even sharpen our point: our Cohanim must assume the downsides of being public property, but like others, they still have personal sins. When we reach Leviticus 10, this tragic dichotomy will be heightened by the tale of the deaths of Nadav and Avihu. Even outside that story, it reminds us all who would aspire to high office: as a public figure, you must be prepared to surrender some autonomy in order to become a vessel of the community.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud1-leadership.png","1536x1536-width":1280,"1536x1536-height":812,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud1-leadership.png","2048x2048-width":1280,"2048x2048-height":812
The Written as an accompaniment to Rabbi Sacks’ weekly Covenant & Conversation essay, the Family Edition is aimed at connecting older children and teenagers with his ideas and thoughts on the parsha. Each element of the Family Edition is progressively more advanced; The Core Idea is appropriate for all ages and the final element, From The Thought of Rabbi Sacks, is the most advanced section. Each section includes Questions to Ponder, aimed at encouraging discussion between family members in a way most appropriate to them. We have also included a section called Around the Shabbat Table with a few further questions on the parsha to think about.
