But instead of discussing the incense altar at the end of ch. 25, the text waits to mention this important component of the sacrificial cult until ch. 30! The altar was located inside the Mishkan structure in between the table and the menorah right in front of the Holy of Holies. Why is the altar discussed here after the clothing of the high priest and well after all the other vessels are discussed?

Ramban explains that the altar is connected to the penultimate verse in the previous chapter where God proclaims that he will dwell amongst the people in the Mishkan. The incense altar is what allows God to dwell amongst the people, because the incense represents the attribute of justice. Later on in the text, Moses will burn incense to halt a plague. Ramban’s interpretation does not fully explain why the altar is listed last. It could have been listed after the other vessels, but not after the whole ceremony for the priests.

Sforno has the exact opposite opinion. He looks at the penultimate verse in the previous chapter as a conclusion of the previous section, and not as a link. Everything else in the Mishkan was meant to make it a location for God to dwell amongst the people. The incense altar was there to thank God for dwelling and connecting with the people. That is why it comes after everything else. The problem with Sforno’s explanation is that the seventh verse links the menorah to the altar: “On it Aaron shall burn aromatic incense: he shall burn it every morning when he tends the lamps” (verse 7).

It is possible that the golden altar is here to bookend the description of the Mishkan. Among the mandated procedures is the priest’s regular burning of incense at twilight, when he ascends to light the lamps of the menorah.

The great Kabbalist and mystic of sixteenth century Safed, Rabbi Isaac Luria, pointed out that the when we look at the opening letters of the words “the lamps at twilight” - אֶת־הַנֵּרֹ֛ת בֵּ֥ין הָעֲרְבַּ֖יִם - it forms the acronym Ahavah the Hebrew word for love. Each and every day, the great mystic teaches, if Aaron wants his service to ascend to the heaven he must do it with feeling, with emotion, with love.

The Chasidic master R. Chaim of Chernowitz writes that the idea is true our daily rituals as Jews. When we just follow the daily procedures dictated by God as simply habits, then we are acting like lifeless individuals, and the mitzvot we perform have no effect upon the Almighty.

I believe that the R. Luria’s idea has a more pressing application, one desperately needed today.

The reality of the world is that there are many “pungent odors,” many bad actors performing various evil deeds. But like Aaron the priest, each of us has the ability, indeed the responsibility, to dispel those bad smells with the “fine aromas” of kindness and good deeds. that, is not by posting our beliefs on Facebook (has anyone ever changed their political beliefs from a Facebook post?) or “enlightening” those with whom we disagree that our views are morally superior…but rather by the performance of good deeds rooted in love.

cover art: Hate Has No Home Here, Steven Luce and the Hollywood-North Park Community Association (used Evidently, it is dangerous to count Jews. Why?

I once offered the following explanation. Nations normally take a census to estimate their strength: military (the number of people who can be conscripted into an army), economic (the number from whom taxes can be raised) or simply demographic (the numerical growth or decline of the nation). The assumption behind every census is that there is strength in numbers. The more numerous a people, the stronger it is.

That is why it is dangerous to count Jews. Jews are a tiny people. The late Milton Himmelfarb once wrote that the total population of Jews throughout the world is smaller than a small statistical error in the Chinese census. Jews constitute a fifth of a per cent of the population of the world: by any normal standards too small to be significant. Nor is this something new.

In one of his concluding addresses in Deuteronomy, Moses said: 'The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you are the fewest of all peoples' (Deuteronomy 7: 7). The danger in counting Jews is that if they believed, for a moment, that there is strength in numbers, they would long ago have given way to despair.

How then do you estimate the strength of the Jewish people? To this the Hebrew Bible gives an answer of surpassing beauty. Ask Jews to give, and then count their contributions. Numerically, Jewry is small, but in terms of its contributions to civilization, it is vast. Somehow this small people produced an unceasing flow of patriarchs, priests, poets and prophets, masters of halakhah and aggadah, codifiers and commentators, philosophers and mystics, sages and saints. It was not once that the Jewish imagination caught fire, but in century after century, sometimes under the worst persecution known to any nation on earth.

If you want to know the strength of the Jewish people, ask them to give, and then count the contributions. To win the Jewish battle, the battle of the spirit, the victory of heart, mind and soul, you do not need numbers. You need dedication, commitment, study, prayer, vision, courage, ideals and hope. You need to offer people tough challenges through which to grow. I learned this when I was a child.

From: Future
