The Jewish people are a holy nation, with the Levites representing the holiest of tribes, and the Kohen Gadol the holiest of Levites. Our festivals are holy days, but the holiness of Shabbat trumps the festivals, and Yom Kippur is the holiest day of all. The land of Israel is a holy place, with Jerusalem the holiest city in the land and the Temple the holiest place in the city. So, it is no surprise that this holiness hierarchy extends to the Tabernacle (and later the Holy Temple) itself.

Rabbi Avi Billet, in a commentary on Parshat Ki Tisa, pointed out that the phrase Kodesh Kodashim – Holy of Holies, is used in Tanach mostly in reference to some part of the Tabernacle. The vessels, the showbread, the sacrificial fire, and some sacrifices were called Kodesh Kodashim. But the instance of the phrase in Exodus 26:33 is different. Here the commandment is to make a curtain to separate ha’Kodesh, the Holy, from “Kodesh Ha-Kodashim” - the Holy of Holies. The Tabernacle and everything in it were holy, but this room – the Holy of Holies – surpasses the holiness of all else. The use of “Kodesh Ha-Kodashim” is only applied to this room of the Tabernacle.

So, why the curtain? The 19th century commentator, the Netziv, asks why are the words “for you” included in the commandment to Moses to make a curtain that will “separate, for you, between the Holy and The Holy of Holies”? In answer, the Netziv refers to two ways in which biblical text denotes a division. One is with the use of the letter lamed which denotes a clear division, as in the creation story and the separation “Bayn mayim l'mayim – between water and water.” The other is with the duplication of the word “bayn” as in this context – “Bayn ha’Kodesh u’bayn Kodesh ha’Kodashim.” The latter, contends the Netziv, indicates a middle ground rather than a definitive separation; an area that has qualities of both things it is separating.

Why was this middle ground necessary? Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein points out a thorny problem. On the day the Tabernacle was inaugurated, Moses was prevented from entering it because the cloud of God was hovering above. But God’s cloud was persistently over the Kodesh ha’Kodashim, so how was Moses ever able to enter it? The answer lies in the middle ground. We know from 1 Kings 8:8 that the poles of the Ark protruded somewhat into the area of the main sanctuary, which would effectively push the dividing curtain back from the Kodesh ha’Kodashim. By standing just inside the curtain, Moses could straddle the middle ground, separated from the Holy, inside the Holy of Holies, but not within the perimeter of the Ark over which the cloud of God hung, for even Moses was not allowed that close.

-62724c78b3d69--62724c78b3d6bex15- milim kodesh And the Ark was entirely missing from the Second Temple, so that when the High Priest was to encounter God on the Day of Atonement, he entered into an utterly bare Holy of Holies.

One of the more infamous, baffling possibilities pursued by mid-twentieth century artists was the art of nothingness. The paradox of the Ark that occupies no space, and which is absent from the Temple teaches us that God is to be found precisely in the cacophonous hush of empty, holy things.

Illustration, used with kind permission of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation:
Robert Rauschenberg: White Painting, 1951,
Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches (121.9 x 121.9 cm)
©Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
RRF Registration# 51.003

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Secunda-Rauschenberg.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1167,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Secunda-Rauschenberg.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1556
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Secunda-Rauschenberg.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1167,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Secunda-Rauschenberg.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1556
Does God Need Bling? Is the use of precious materials a divine affirmation of their value?

One element common to most of the construction of the Tabernacle is that it is gilded or layered. Except for the Menorah, all of the vessels, including the carrying poles, are made of wood covered in gold or silver. In chapter 26, this theme carries over to the fabrics of the Mishkan as well, with simple goat skins surrounded by lavishly colored coverings above and below. What is the significance of all this? Why have a goat skin covering? Why use wood, rather than making everything from pure gold like the menorah?

The dynamic of inside and outside is central to the Tabernacle, with sanctity increasing as you move inwards. If this is the case, then perhaps the inner layers of the Tabernacle are the holiest as well. The Midrash on these verses expounds on the idea that God speaks to us not in strict accordance with the truth of His existence, but rather according to our own strength and capacity to receive and understand. This idea is a reflection not of weakness, of course, but of God's humility. God greatness is not threatened by confining it to human standards. Where you find God's strength, the rabbis teach, there you find his humility.

Perhaps the source of the glitz stems from the same idea, reflecting not divine affirmation, but simply human appreciation of all that glitters. What God needs is no more than a simple shepherd's hut of wood and goat skin, and in truth, not even that. But the radical message of the Torah is that this home is built to fit people's standards, not God's, and what people need in order to relate with awe and respect is gold, silver and other precious materials. It's a message we've already seen (in Exodus chapter 19), but one which bears frequent review: to create covenantal relationships means listening to the other even when we know they're wrong.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/shutterstock_51485890.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":960,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/shutterstock_51485890.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1279
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/shutterstock_51485890.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":960,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/shutterstock_51485890.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1279
E Pluribus... This wisdom became clear when we assembled the shelves for my new apartment and found that one panel came up short. Anyone who has ever worked with limited material on a carpentry project or when mending clothes knows the ramifications of hasty work. To avoid an unfortunate snafu, we rely on clear instructions to guide our work.

Manufacturing is a central motif of Exodus 26, as the Torah lays out the designs of the tabernacle. In exquisite detail, we read about the means of assembly, the colors, materials, and dimensions. Everything must be done just so, or else the Holy of Holies might be wholly hole-y. Instructions of this nature feel devoid of meaning, yet the product described is of utmost importance to the religious practices of our tradition. As a result, this chapter is somewhat of a paradox; though the plot of our heritage tale is not developed by this section, the verses are vital for understanding the stage on which future events occur.

Looking beyond the physical arrangements described, a more relevant message emerges. These blueprints evoke the importance of careful planning. The unusual materials described - acacia wood, dolphin skin, colorful threads, and precious metals - suggest bringing together diverse elements in a unified product. Furthermore, these materials require artisans of many backgrounds to collaborate. Ultimately, the precision of construction yields a strong structure readily transported to serve a nomadic populace. A close look at the explicit details in this chapter uncovers an emphasis on intentionality and diversity in our modern Jewish community. With each measure and cut, the fabric of our people unfolds.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/ps115-diversity.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/ps115-diversity.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/ps115-diversity.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/ps115-diversity.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
Bible on the Bench: Only Connect! This Sanctuary was not for the sake of God, but for the Israelites so that they would be able to sense His Presence among them. The Ark of the Covenant was the first of the Tabernacle’s furnishings.

Why was the Ark of the Covenant accorded such importance? What was its function? Why were the stone tablets given at Mount Sinai placed inside the Ark and sealed under its cover? What were the roles of the cover and the cherubim above it?

From among all of the Tabernacle’s furnishings described in this parasha the artist chooses to portray only the Ark of the Covenant, which he sees as a powerful symbol of God’s Presence among the people of Israel. Moses was to “deposit in the Ark the tablets of the Pact” (Exod. 25:16), so that the Ark with the tablets given at Sinai would be an ever-present extension of the theophany. Concealing the tablets within the Ark underscored their spiritual importance, as opposed to their physical appearance.

The artist’s rendition of its gold overlay highlights the sanctity imparted to the Ark, as gold, being a pure material, mirrors holiness. We also see the two golden poles that were permanently attached to the Ark on both its sides by which it was carried from place to place, as the Ark itself was so holy it was not itself to be handled: “The poles shall remain in the rings of the Ark; they shall not be removed from it” (Exod. 25:15).

The artist portrays the Ark as it is described in the text: a deep chest trimmed around with a gold molding and topped with a golden cover, and two cherubim cast onto the cover: “The cherubim shall have their wings spread out above, shielding the cover with their wings. They shall confront each other, the faces of the cherubim being turned toward the cover” (Exod. 25:20). This configuration reflected a concept known in the ancient Near East and also found in the Hebrew Bible wherein winged cherubim guarded and carried the Divine Throne. We find references to the Ark of God as being the Ark of the “Lord of Hosts enthroned on the cherubim” (1 Sam. 4:4; 2 Sam. 6:2), and it was regarded as the throne of a king or the footstool of God.

The artist portrays the cherubim atop the Ark as representing a continuing theophany: “There I will meet with you and I will impart from above the cover from between the two cherubim that are on top of the Ark of the Pact…” (Exod. 25:22). As the Lord spoke to Moses from a cloud when he stood on top of Mount Sinai, now He will speak with him from between the cherubim.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/19-Terumah.jpg","1536x1536-width":1491,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/19-Terumah.jpg","2048x2048-width":1987,"2048x2048-height":2048
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/19-Terumah.jpg","1536x1536-width":1491,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/19-Terumah.jpg","2048x2048-width":1987,"2048x2048-height":2048
Yakov Azriel, who lives in Israel, has published five books of poetry in the USA and hundreds of poems in journals and magazines.
