\u201cGod disposed Egyptians favorably for the people. Moreover, Moses himself was much esteemed in the land of Egypt amongst Pharaoh\u2019s servants and among the people\u201d (11:3).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Up until this point God\u2019s emotional control was centered on Pharaoh. God hardened Pharaoh\u2019s heart to display God\u2019s might, as a way to show the Israelites that God was present for them, and as a way to punish the Egyptians. The plagues had done the job on the Egyptians. Initially, Pharaoh\u2019s wizards had been able to replicate the first two plagues.\u00a0 When it came to the third one, they could not replicate it. They told Pharaoh that it was the finger of God. Later the wizards could not even come before Pharaoh because of the plague of boils.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Later, in the plague of hail, certain Egyptians had begun to fear God. They placed their animals inside their barns to protect them. God allowed these animals to live. They also approached Pharaoh to plead with him to stop the madness and not let the country be destroyed.\u00a0 Now, on the eve of the final plague, God tips the scales in favor of the Israelites, making sure the Egyptians find favor in their eyes. This will allow the Israelites to ask for and receive booty to take out of Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The second part of this verse is what is really interesting. Moses has become famous in Egypt. Note that he is not famous because of any intervention by God. Instead, Moses is famous on his own. Why would the text need to distinguish between the two? Moses\u2019s fame clearly came from the acts of God, even if God did not have to directly intervene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The answer probably has to do with the turnaround for Moses. Moses began the book as the adopted son of Pharaoh, and possible brother of the current Pharaoh. He then kills an Egyptian and runs away. When he returns he\u2019s not loved. But now, as a result of the plagues, the people of Egypt respect him: <\/span>ha\u2019ish Moshe gadol me\u2019od<\/em> <\/span>- \u201cmuch esteemed\u201d - <\/span>be\u2019eretz mitzrayim<\/span><\/em>. Perhaps the people are longing for a different timeline, one where this \u201cson\u201d of Pharaoh becomes king, frees the Israelites, and saves the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As I read Exodus 11 in this cultural moment, from the epicenter of the #MeToo movement, everything I look at is through the lens of trauma. Through the relived trauma of nearly every woman speaking out or bearing witness today.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But I have not only been thinking of trauma; I have been thinking of spectacle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Exodus 11, God promises that every first-born in the land of Egypt shall die if Pharaoh does not set the Israelites free. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The narrative we have inherited is one in which God delivered us from bondage in Egypt. But when we press against that narrative, we must remember that the same God who freed us<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>was the God who sent us into slavery in the first place. And when we are told that God sent the curse of the first-born son so that Pharaoh might finally let our people go, we must remember that God hardened Pharaoh's heart so that he would not set us free. \u201cPharaoh will not heed you,\u201d God tells Moses, \u201cin order that My marvels may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The curse of the first-born has never sat easily with me. I cannot help but wonder how the<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>Israelites, grieving the loss of their own infant sons, would have experienced \u201ca loud cry in all the land of Egypt, such as has never been or will ever be again.\u201d Did the Hebrews relive their own trauma when the Egyptians lost their children, just as women throughout the world are reliving theirs today?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The death of every first-born child in Egypt was a foregone conclusion, and it was all for show. A spectacle so that God might display power. It seems to me that we are also experiencing a historical moment in which justice only conveys the trappings of legitimacy. That all across the world survivors are suffering, and greatly, so that the marvels of those in power might be \u201cNow the Lord had said to Moses, \u201cI will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely. Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.\u201d (11:1-2)\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why the silver and gold? The Israelites were in such a hurry to leave, and the Egyptians so hasty in urging their departure, that they did not even have time for the dough to rise. Why then was God so insistent that they take the time to ask for these parting gifts? What conceivable use did they have for them in the long journey across the wilderness?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A people driven by hate are not \u2013 cannot be \u2013 free. Had the people carried with them a burden of hatred and a desire for revenge, Moses would have taken the Israelites out of Egypt, but he would not taken Egypt out of the Israelites. They would still be there, bound by chains of anger as restricting as any metal. To be free you have to let go of hate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There is a fundamental difference between living with the past and living in the past. Judaism is a religion of memory. We remember \u00a0the exodus annually, even daily. But we do so for the sake of the future, not the past. \u2018Do not oppress the stranger\u2019, says the Torah, \u2018because you know what it feels like to be a stranger.\u2019 In other words: what you suffered, do not inflict. Memory is a moral tutorial. In Santayana\u2019s famous words: those who do not remember the past, are destined to repeat it. Israel remembers its past precisely in order not to repeat it. Moses\u2019 message is: remember, but not in order to hate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

That means drawing a line over the resentments of the past. That is why, when a slave went free, his master had to give him gifts (Deut. 15: 12-15). This was not to compensate for the fact of slavery. There is no way of giving back the years spent in servitude. But there is a way of ensuring that the parting is done with goodwill, with some symbolic compensation. The gifts allow the former slave to reach emotional closure; to feel that a new chapter is beginning; to leave without anger and a sense of humiliation. One who has received gifts finds it hard to hate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why does the artist choose to illustrate all ten plagues here even though the parasha<\/em> relates only the last three?Why does he picture Egyptian gods?<\/p>\r\n

We can answer these questions by reviewing the story of the eighth plague. Moses and Aaron come to Pharaoh demanding, in the name of God, that he let the Israelites leave Egypt to worship Him in the desert. They warn Pharaoh that if he refuses, there will be a plague of locusts \u201cthat shall cover the surface (ein<\/em>) of the land so that no one will be able to see the land\u201d (Exod. 10:5). The Hebrew word \u201cein<\/em>\u201d refers to the \u201csun\u201d (eye of the land) that will be covered, so the land will not be seen.<\/p>\r\n

Pharaoh refuses, but his servants, feeling threatened, urge him to let the Israelites go. He calls Moses and Aaron back and agrees to let the men go but not the women and children, saying, \u201csee ye that evil (ra\u2019ah<\/em>) is before your face\u201d (Exod. 10:10). As the Hebrew word \u201cra\u2019ah<\/em>\u201d is also one of the names of the Egyptian sun-god, scholars see that statement as a portent of a bitter struggle between Ra\u2019ah and the locusts. Pharaoh then voices a connection between a plague and a particular Egyptian god, so the artist pictured all the plagues here, juxtaposing them with the relevant Egyptians deities.<\/p>\r\n

The first plague, which caused the Nile\u2019s water to turn into blood, was an attack against the Nile god Hapi.<\/em> The frogs of the second plague defy the goddess of fertility, Hekat, shown with a human body and a frog\u2019s head, and is associated with frogs. The third plague of lice confronted the god Khepri, <\/em>a human figure with a beetle-shaped head, who represents rebirth out of the sand. The fourth plague, the blood-sucking dog fly, a creature that was abhorred, was seen as the manifestation of the fly god Uatchit. The fifth plague, the pestilence that attacked the cattle, was linked with the goddess Hathor, who has the form of a large cow. The sixth plague, the boils, was associated with the goddess of epidemics, S<\/em>ekhmet, a woman with a lion\u2019s head. The seventh plague, the hail storm was an attack against Seth, the god responsible for wind and storm. The ninth plague, the darkening of the sun, defied Horus, the god of light, a personification of the life-giving power of the sun, usually pictured as a falcon-headed man wearing a sun disk as a crown. The darkness and its obstruction of the sun proved God\u2019s supremacy. The tenth plague, killing of the first born, assailed Osiris, the king of the dead, pictured as a bearded figure with white mummy wrappings and a crown, holding the symbols of supreme power.<\/p>\r\n

With just one plague left the preparations for the Israelite escape begin. The first step, well before the command of the paschal lamb or the unleavened bread, is the need to gather silver and gold from the Egyptians.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Talmud views this command as some sort of recompense for the horrors inflicted upon the Israelites. It imagines a conversation between God and Moses: God requests that Moses tell the Israelites to ask the Egyptians for silver and gold, \u201clest Abraham argue that the exile and enslavement of his descendants was fulfilled, but the promise of leaving with great wealth was not.\u201d (see Genesis 15)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This silver and gold, the attainment of wealth, in many ways becomes the litmus test and arbiter for the escaped slaves in the book of Exodus.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When Moses gathers the people and asks them for gifts to build God\u2019s Temple they respond incredibly generously. They donate silver, and gold, and copper, and fine linens, and yarns, and precious stones, and woods. So much is donated that the artisans come running to Moses and report \u201cThe people are bringing more than we need to complete the work.\u201d Moses sends out a message telling everyone to stop donating. (Less surprising is their immediate compliance to this message)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet in the middle the story of the building of the tabernacle, we are told of a devious use of wealth: the fashioning of the golden calf. With Moses whereabouts unknown, Aaron instructs the unruly people to go and gather the gold earrings from their wives, sons, and daughters. But instead of heading home and returning with the necessary gold, they immediately remove their own gold rings and give them to Aaron. He then fashions the materials into the golden calf.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Is the function of the gold and silver just the fulfillment of the prophecy in Genesis 15, or is it intended as a challenge to the runaway slaves? Srulik left last night.
\r\n<\/span>A hasty hug; a quick good-bye;
\r\n<\/span>And he\u2019s gone.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We belonged to the same master
\r\n<\/span>Who hit us and whipped us and cursed us both,
\r\n<\/span>\u201cJewish dog.\u201d
\r\n<\/span>Which really brought us together,
\r\n<\/span>Two half-moons lighting up our dark \u2014
\r\n<\/span>He the Jew, I the dog.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I was leashed to the gate to guard the slaves,
\r\n<\/span>To make sure they couldn\u2019t leave the ghetto;
\r\n<\/span>But me and Srulik would sneak out
\r\n<\/span>Under the fence in the evenings
\r\n<\/span>To play hide-and-seek by the river.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

My master never, never gave me enough to eat,
\r\n<\/span>So me and Srulik would go fishing.
\r\n<\/span>If we caught a fish with the little net he made,
\r\n<\/span>We\u2019d share it \u2014 half for me,
\r\n<\/span>Half he\u2019d save for his sisters.
\r\n<\/span>Once, we hid in the reeds and bulrushes,
\r\n<\/span>Watching herons feed in the still waters,
\r\n<\/span>Then rise and fly away in flocks of white and pink.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But afterwards the Bad Times came,
\r\n<\/span>When the cradle of the Holy Infant Horus cracked
\r\n<\/span>And His sacred mother, our Blessed Lady Isis the vulture-headed,
\r\n<\/span>Flew away like the herons;<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ra, the mighty sun-god, was swallowed by the moon;
\r\n<\/span>The eye of the earth turned white-blind,
\r\n<\/span>And even my master\u2019s staff shattered.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When the river turned to blood,
\r\n<\/span>Srulik gave me his water.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When lice attacked me, wave after wave,
\r\n<\/span>A living, crawling, biting sea,
\r\n<\/span>Srulik spent hours combing and brushing my fur.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When boils covered me, even my nose, even inside my ears,
\r\n<\/span>Srulik found herbs to soothe my itching.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Then came the hail \u2014 that was the worst \u2014
\r\n<\/span>Arrows of ice with pointed swords of white fire inside;
\r\n<\/span>But Srulik ran out of his hut to find me;
\r\n<\/span>He carried me back to his home
\r\n<\/span>Where I slept next to him on his mat.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And when darkness enveloped us,
\r\n<\/span>A black fog suffocating us alive,
\r\n<\/span>Srulik was my light.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

They\u2019re burying my master\u2019s first-born son this morning.
\r\n<\/span>But I \u2014 I mourn my Srulik.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One Last Plague<\/b><\/p>\r\n

\"One last plague\" (11:1) and it's over. The plague will actually only take place in the next chapter, but here we get the promo as well as a sneak peek at preparations for the Exodus.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Borrowing vessels<\/b>. The Exodus from Egypt is approaching, and with it, the following instructions to Moses: \"Speak to the people and let them ask every man of his neighbor and every woman of her neighbor vessels of silver and gold\" (11:2). Why do the Egyptians let them have them? Because God \"gave the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians,\" and also because, after everything that took place in the previous chapters, Moses was very highly respected (11:3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Warning of the upcoming plague of the firstborn<\/b>. The tenth and most devastating plague of all doesn't come as a surprise. Moses is sent to Pharaoh with a detailed message about what is going to happen: \"Around midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt... and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die\" (11:4-5), but, as expected, \"and the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart and he did let the Israelites go out of his land\" (11:10).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What will happen in the next chapter? The plague of the firstborn, as was promised. But not only that...<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \r\n\t
  1. Borrowing with no intention to return<\/b>. Do you find this embarrassing? The Bible doesn't seem to. But in the Talmud (Sanhedrin 91:A) is an opinion that addresses this matter and sees the gold and silver vessels as fair payment for the years of slavery.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. The promise is fulfilled<\/b>. In Chapter 3, at the Burning Bush, before all this began, God promised: \"And I will give the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians and when they leave they will not leave empty-handed\" (3:21), and now it actually happens (11:3).<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n

    3. <\/span>From... to... and even<\/b>. The plague of the firstborn is to strike all the firstborn males of every class. Even the firstborn animals.
