Rashi famously asks - since this is the very first mitzvah given to the Israelite nation - why was this verse not the first verse of the Torah? Rashi’s answer is that Genesis until now was setting the stage to show that God was the true custodian of the world and therefore could give the Land of Canaan to the Israelites.

What Rashi’s answer does not address is why this was the first mitzvah given to the nation. To answer this question, we must go back to Abraham and the covenant of the parts. In chapter 15 of Genesis, God promised Abraham two things. The first is that his descendants would be slaves in a foreign land and the second is that they would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. The connection with the promise that they will be slaves in a foreign land is clear with this chapter. Now, following slavery in Egypt, the Israelites are ready to leave and become a nation.

What is the connection of the stars? The answer to that is a little bit of astronomy. The new moon, which is the beginning of the month, is when the moon is just a sliver in the sky. Without the bright moonlight, stars shine even brighter. The new moon is usually the best time to do stargazing. Therefore, when God promised Abraham that his descendants, the Israelites, would be as numerous as the stars, it must have happened at the first of the month. This would provide Abraham with the most dramatic effect of the promise.

But why stars? By picking the first of the month when the moon is least visible and the stars are shining the brightest, God is also sending a message to the Israelites. For the past year he had been showing them the strength and power of God in order to get them out of Egypt and now they were becoming a nation. God‘s message is that sometimes, like with the plagues, God will be the one who shines bright. However, now that the Israelites will be a nation, it is their job to shine brightly as well and not always rely on the bright moon to shield Free people often work long hours doing arduous tasks. The difference lies in who controls time. A slave works until he or she is allowed to stop. A free person decides when to begin and end. Control over time is the essential difference between slavery and freedom. Control over the calendar gave the Israelites the power to determine when the New Moon occurred, and thus when the festivals occur. They were given authority over time. The first command to the Israelites was thus an essential prelude to freedom. It said: learn how to value time and make it holy. “Teach us rightly to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Ps. 90:20).

<p style="direction: ltr; On the tenth of Nisan (the first month) a lamb is set aside which is to be slaughtered on the 14th of Nisan at dusk. The blood of the sacrificial lamb is to be used to mark the doorposts and lintel of the house. This marking will distinguish the Israelites' houses from the Egyptians', protecting them from the slaughterer who will come to kill the Egyptians' firstborn males.

The sacrifice itself is to be eaten "with Matzot and bitter herbs" (12:8. The distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites was a recurring motif throughout the plagues. What's new here is that in the plague of the firstborn this distinction isn't automatic - the people had to do something. Slaughter a lamb. Mark their houses. By doing so, saying: I belong to this people. And being rescued from the plague.

And I will pass over you. This is the source and the meaning of the Passover offering - "and I will see the blood and I will pass over you and there will be no plague upon you to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt" (12:13).

A night to remember.
