It makes sense that Aaron\u2019s sons would bring a strange fire to God in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). Aaron their father is the high priest. They are priests themselves. The building and inauguration of the Mishkan, and the sewing of the uniforms and the inauguration of the priests\u2014they all come together. And at their inauguration, Aaron\u2019s sons are to stay in the Mishkan\u2014not stepping out once\u2014for a whole week. Why not, then, see the Mishkan as their home? Why not see it as their own private grounds for their own private flame?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After He strikes Aaron\u2019s sons down, God offers a new set of laws. These laws take Aaron and his remaining family far afield from the Mishkan and the pristine sacrifice. Now the priests are to teach the people the difference between pure and impure, are to help the people navigate the animal kingdom, bodies of water, bodily fluids. The priests are to serve new mothers who come bearing offerings. The priests are to visit lepers\u2019 homes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After commanding these laws, God teaches Aaron of Yom Kippur. On that day Aaron\u2014and whichever High Priest succeeds him in the role\u2014will enter the Holy of Holies: the most sacred place in the Mishkan, the most sacred place in all the universe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Enter shmita: for six years we work the soil for our food and profit. But on the seventh year \u2013 the Sabbatical year, shmita \u2013 God changes the order. He tells us to let the land fallow, for us to relinquish our crops to \u201cso the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the beast of the field shall eat\u201d (Exodus 23:11).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

You think of where you are as your own grounds. As the field where your own special saga gets carried out. But to treat it as only this is to defile it. Because what you see as your own special ground is a part of the whole world. That is the world of the animal kingdom, and of the poor just beyond your yard, and of what you owe them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What you see as your own private grounds is actually a base from which to serve the world. What you see as your own private grounds holds the soil to nourish the world.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This year is the shmita year: Shmita means a sabbatical year for the Earth but also for ourselves, our communities, and our world. In 1995, the Jesuit-trained Jack Miles published the results of a years\u2019 long project to write the biography of the Author of the World. The Pulitzer Prize winning \"<\/span>God: A Biography\"\u00a0<\/span><\/i>is one of the great religious texts of our time. We know God only from His Books, and Miles charts how the Creator creates himself verse to verse and chapter to chapter. The God of the Tanach is not Milton\u2019s God, \u201calone from all eternity.\u201d His story is linked to our history; He is detectable in the firmament and discoverable in the family. We become His memories, even as He charts our futures.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This chapter features God drafting His own autobiography. His story is relational; it coheres in the tangle of revelations and desert-intimacies shown to the patriarchs. Crucially, He tells Moses that, in the words of the contemporary Italian writer Elena Ferrante, this will be the story of a new name. If the relationship with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob establishes continuity of character, the evolution in appellation signals a new chapter. This syncopated beat of sameness and differentiation is how we write ourselves into being. We are always the same, only a little bit different, which makes all the difference in the world. It rhymes with Proust\u2019s fundamental insight in \"\u00c0<\/em><\/span> la reserche du temps purdu<\/span><\/i>,\" namely that the self is an onion of multiple selves, all gummed together by the adhesives of memory and perhaps a madeleine here or there.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The self that is clacking these words out on a keyboard, and the One who speaks to Moses conjure themselves in the present not only by recourse to the past, but through invocation of the future. Covenant in the past, revelation in the moment, and redemption in the future. These are the Divine eruptions of personality, the data points that constellate into personhood. We, created in His image, find our story in His(tory) as we go about scribbling our way to fragile eternities.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
