Chapter 10 presents a shift in the messaging of the plagues. In the introduction to the Plagues, God explains to Moses that: \u201cthe Egyptians shall know that I am God, when I stretch out My hand over Egypt and bring out the Israelites from their midst\u201d (7:11). In the very first plague, Moses tells Pharaoh \u201cSee, I shall strike the water in the Nile with the rod that is in my hand, and it will be turned into blood\u201d (7:17). By doing so. Pharaoh will know that God is God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Next, in chapter 8, before the plague of wild animals\/swarms of flies, Moses again explains to Pharaoh that \u201con that day I will set apart the region of Goshen, where My people dwell, so that no swarms of insects shall be there, that you may know that I God am in the midst of the land\u201d (8:18). For the next plague, pestilence, Moses tells Pharaoh: \u201cFor this time I will send all My plagues upon your person, and your courtiers, and your people, in order that you may know that there is none like Me in all the land.\u201d (9:14). After Pharoah begs Moses to stop the plague of hail, Moses responds: \u201cas I go out of the city, I shall spread out my hands to God; the thunder will cease and the hail will fall no more, so that you may know that the earth is God\u2019s\u201d (9:31).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Notice the progression: a general introduction that both the Egyptians and Pharaoh will know that \u201cGod is God;\u201d then that \u201cGod is God in the midst of the land;\u201d then that \u201cthere is none like in God in all the land.\u201d Finally, not only is God present in the land and that no one in the land can match God, but that the very land itself is owned and controlled by God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In chapter 10 the messaging shifts: \u201cthat you may recount in the hearing of your child and of your child\u2019s child how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and how I displayed My signs among them\u2014in order that you may know that I am God\u201d (10:2). Now that the Egyptian people realize that God is master of the land, it is time for God to set sights on the Israelites themselves. Recall that the Israelites did not believe Moses when he came to tell them that God had sent him. Now, before the final three plagues, the purpose of the plagues is no longer about convincing the Egyptians, instead, it is about convincing the very people Moses is there to The main focus of Exodus 10 is the plague of locusts, (v. 1-20). Although the Creation of the world features God merely \u201csaying\u201d things into existence (Genesis 1:3,6 9,11,14-5, 20.24,26-7,) the locusts do not occur via a Divine utterance, but rather due to a \u201cnaturalistic\u201d phenomenon:\u201d... and God drove an east wind over the land all that day and all night; and when morning came, the east wind had brought the locusts\u201d (17), and later: \u201cGod caused a shift to a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and hurled them into the Sea of Reeds\u201d (19).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This identical methodology was also employed at the Sea of Reeds: \u201cGod drove back the sea with a strong east wind all that night, and turned the sea into dry ground\u201d (14:21).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One commentator suggests that this indicates how God will interact with His creation: \u201cAnd this is what He planned, that the miracle(<\/span>s<\/span><\/i>) should occur as a result of natural aspects of the world, to demonstrate that He can smite even via nature\u201d (Haemek Davar,\u00a0<\/span>Naftali Tzi Yehuda Berlin,<\/span>\u00a0on Exodus 10:13).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Prior to, and following, the plague of locusts, God\u2019s omnipotence was on display as a result of His <\/span>suspension <\/span><\/i>of the laws of nature. The locusts and splitting of the sea were intended to demonstrate that even nature, hitherto presumed to be a neutral part of our environment, could be subscripted to God\u2019s purposes, should He so desire.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The concept of God working through nature is incorporated by the Talmud into Luleyanus\u2019 and Pappas\u2019 talmudic \u2018trolling\u2019 of Trajan:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When Trajan sought to kill Luleyanus and his brother Pappas in Laodicea, he said to them: If you are from the nation of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, let your God come and save you from my hand, just as He saved them from the hand of Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 3).
\r\n<\/span>Luleyanus and Pappas said to him: Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were full-fledged righteous people, and they were worthy that a miracle should be performed for them, and Nebuchadnezzar was a legitimate king who rose to power through his merit, and it is fitting that a miracle be performed through him. But this wicked man, Trajan, is a commoner, not a real king, and it is not fitting that a miracle be performed through him. \u2026 And we are not wholly righteous, and have been condemned to destruction by the Omnipresent for our sins. And if you do not kill us, the Omnipresent has many other executioners. And if men do not kill us, the Omnipresent has many bears and lions in His world that can hurt us and kill us. Pharaoh finally relents \u201cGo and worship the Lord your God, who are the ones to go?\u201d Moses\u2019 responds, \u201cwith our young and our old we will go, with our sons and our daughters we will go.\u201d Pharaoh quickly takes back the offer. He simply doesn\u2019t believe them. Everyone must go for your three days festival? He, correctly, believes the Israelites will not return, that they are clearly \u201cbent on mischief.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet, Moses\u2019 words were not words of mischief, they were just novel and revolutionary. The worship of the Lord is not limited to a segment of the population. It is not a group of priests or prophets alone that perform the service. Each and every person is obliged and obligated to be present and participate. \u00a0The democratization of worship is a theme that will be repeated in numerous other instances in the Torah: all (men, women, the young and old\u2026) are present at Sinai, in the aftermath of Sinai \u201cAny place where my name is mentioned I will come and bless you.\u201d Towards the end of Deuteronomy, we are introduced to the monumental \u201cHakhel\u201d gathering that would occur every seven years. \u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe men, the women, the children and the stranger gather to hear, to learn, to revere the Lord, and to faithfully observe every word of this teaching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sadly, the idea didn\u2019t fully take hold. Whether it be the childless Hannah in the book of Samuel, an outsider viewed as a drunkard by the Prophet Eli, a woman who aspires to lead a major Jewish organization, a deaf person who has nowhere that he feels comfortable praying, or a convert who wants to sit as a judge on a conversion court, it is not only Pharaoh who refuses the democratization of Jewish worship and leadership.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Interestingly there are a series of lovely Hasidic ideas that add a layer of meaning to the words in an individual\u2019s spiritual journeys to God. When you approach God bring your youth, that is to say, your sense of wonder curiosity and excitement. Bring your old, meaning, your wisdom and experience\u2026The desire to bring your full range of emotions in the worship of God is commendable, but as Moses said the need to include all in the service of God is required.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the midst of darkness, the houses of the Israelites were filled with light (Exodus 10:23).\u00a0In a land where the ruler is unfeeling to the sufferings experienced by those he rules, to the point that he promulgates edicts that continue to worsen the suffering of all, there is a group of people who are still glowing with light.<\/p>\r\n

In fact, the light is so powerful that they, unlike anyone else in the land,\u00a0protest the unjust regulations and the corruption in the system so much that if they are unable to reform it they will exile themselves from the land, to found a society devoted to principles of justice.<\/p>\r\n

And in fact, by the end of the portion of Bo (Exodus 10:1- 13:22), the light has continued to illuminate their path so brightly that \u201cthe Lord freed the Israelites from the land of Egypt\u201d (Exodus 12:51).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Not only are the Israelites the only group to successfully resist the tyranny of the Pharaoh and overthrow him with his chariot in the sea [spoiler alert: next week in Exodus 14:28], they create a commemoration of this event, a way to retell it each year.\u00a0Jews still discourse once a year on \u201cwhat the Lord did for me when I went free from Egypt\u201d (Exodus 13:8) at an elaborate meal, a symposium on the meaning of freedom.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

That divine power behind the freedom is perhaps the source of the enduring light that is used to create the world (Genesis 1: 3,4,5, 15, 17), the light transmitted from the sanctified priests to the entire people in the priestly blessing (Numbers 6:25) whose words are used by Jewish parents to bless their children each Sabbath and which accompany them in a pillar of fire (Exodus 13:21 and 14:20) to radiate a path for them through the desert.\u00a0The light is commemorated in the Tabernacle when a menorah is set up to project light outward (Exodus 25: 37).<\/p>\r\n

Light is an embodiment of God in numerous verses in the Bible, such as the verse quoted in the Friday night Lecha Dodi hymn: \u201cArise my light, for your light is coming\u2026the Lord shall shine upon you and his glory be seen upon you\u201d (Isaiah 60:1-2) and \u201cin your light we shall see light\u201d (Psalms 36:10).<\/p>\r\n

The light in the houses is the motif of the Israelite resistance, their fealty to a divine law and system of value that supersedes the cruelty of the Pharaoh whose intransigence makes him harden his own heart ten times (Ex 7:13, 14, 22; 8: 11, 15, 28; 9:7, 34, 35 and 13:15).\u00a0The hardness of the heart of the Pharaoh is the very opposite of light which has the property of being able to shine through and around objects.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Against all odds in this portion, Bo, the light shines through in the homes of the Israelites.\u00a0Let us hope we can continue to use the light to defeat any Pharaoh who would attempt to extinguish it.<\/p>\r\n

When Moses threatened locusts, Pharaoh caved:

So God brought swarms of locusts o\u2019er the land
\r\nSo thick they blocked the sun, like an eclipse
\r\nSaid Pharaoh: Stop this plague! I must demand!
\r\nThought Moses: It is getting old, this script.<\/p>\r\n

The locusts went, and darkness came instead
\r\nA dark so black and thick it could be felt
\r\nThe men of Egypt couldn\u2019t move their heads
\r\nBut there was light wherever Israel dwelt.<\/p>\r\n

Said Pharaoh: \u201cLet me never see your face!\u201d

The parsha <\/em>of Bo details the last three of the plagues and the institution of Passover, both at the time of the exodus itself and as it was subsequently to be celebrated. God sends the eighth and ninth plagues, locusts and darkness, but Pharaoh still refuses to free the Israelite slaves. God tells Moses that the tenth plague will be the killing of all the firstborn Egyptians and commands each Israelite home to slaughter a lamb and spread the blood on their doorposts, in order to protect their firstborns. After the death of the firstborns, Pharaoh demands that the Israelites leave. The long exile is at an end. The Israelites have begun their journey to freedom.<\/p>\r\n

The plague of darkness, beyond its role as the ninth in the series of ten plagues, was a decisive stage in the departure of Egypt, a stage of decision-making for both sides. This was no ordinary darkness that could be softened by a glimmer of starlight, or to which human eyes might adjust; rather the darkness was so thick it could be felt, and for three days the Egyptians could neither see each other nor move from their places (Exodus 10:23).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The commentator Sforno (Italy, early 16<\/span>th<\/span> century) explained: When Moses reached out his hand he \u201cremoved the natural darkness of the night\u201d and replaced it with darkness that was \u201cunwilling to accept light.\u201d Beyond his Renaissance physics, Sforno expresses an important idea: before darkness can give way to light, before any change is possible, we must be open and willing to accept that change is possible. Almost paradoxically, unyielding darkness facilitated the necessary receptivity. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Previously, Pharaoh had summoned Moses to ask that a plague be lifted (see the previous plague, locusts in verses 16-17), but now specifies that the Israelites will be allowed leave (Ex. 10:24). When the lights came back on, Pharaoh recants, but what happened in the dark?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For three days, the Egyptians were nearly paralyzed in place. Pharaoh, too, was alone with his thoughts, isolated from the advisors who quite likely presented him with conflicting perspectives on every issue. Moreover, no one could see him, allowing Pharaoh a chance to break free from any concern about how changing his mind and releasing the Israelite slaves would damage his reputation. The clarity he achieved in the dark helped Pharaoh came to the correct conclusion that he had met a Higher Power, and letting people of Israel go was the right things to do.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Not only Pharaoh made an important decision in the three days of darkness. Until now, the Israelites had done little if anything to facilitate their freedom. Soon that would change, and the time without concern for what Egyptians might see, say or do gave them an opportunity to decide with whom to cast their fate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Living in darkness is indeed a plague, something to be studiously avoided. The ninth plague \u2013 darkness \u2013 comes shrouded in a darkness of its own.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We would expect the ninth plague to be very serious indeed, something that threatened, even if it did not immediately take, human life... Darkness is a nuisance, but no more. The phrase \u201cdarkness that can be felt\u201d suggests what happened: a khamsin, a sandstorm of a kind not unfamiliar in Egypt, which can last for several days, producing sand- and dust-filled air that obliterates the light of the sun. A khamsin is usually produced by a southern wind that blows into Egypt from the Sahara desert. The worst sandstorm is usually the first of the season, in March. This fits the dating of the plague which happened shortly before the death of the firstborn, on Pesach.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The ninth plague was a miracle, but not an event wholly unknown to the Egyptians, then or now. Why then does it figure in the narrative, immediately prior to its climax? The answer lies in a line from Dayyenu, the song we sing as part of the Haggadah: \u201cIf God had executed judgment against them [the Egyptians] but had not done so against their gods, it would have been sufficient.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\r\n

The greatest god in the Egyptian pantheon was Ra or Re, the sun god. The name of the Pharaoh often associated with the exodus, Ramses II, means meses, \u201cson of\u201d (as in the name Moses) Ra, the god of the sun. Egypt \u2013 so its people believed \u2013 was ruled by the sun. Its human ruler or Pharaoh was semi-divine, the child of the sun-god.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The plague of darkness was not a \u201cmofet\u201d but an \u201cot,\u201d a sign. The obliteration of the sun signaled that there is a power greater than Ra. Yet what the plague represented was less the power of God over the sun, but the rejection by God of a civilization that turned one man, Pharaoh, into an absolute ruler with the ability to enslave other human beings \u2013 and of a culture that could tolerate the murder of children because that is what Ra himself did.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

10:11 - \u201c<\/span>No! You menfolk hagevarim<\/em>\u00a0go and worship the LORD, since that is what you want.\u201d And they were expelled from Pharaoh\u2019s presence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The above quote is Pharaoh\u2019s response to Moses\u2019 bold proclamation of who is to leave Egypt (v. 9): Moses replied, \u201cWe will all go, young and old: we will go with our sons and daughters, our flocks and herds; for we must observe the LORD\u2019s festival.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But Pharaoh was only down with the men leaving. The word used is gever<\/em> (sing.), gevarim<\/em> (plural). This word is from the root \u05d2-\u05d1-\u05e8, g-b-r<\/em>, which underlies a number of basic Hebrew words. The noun gever<\/em> means adult male, though originally referred to a rooster. But it means more than \u05d0\u05d9\u05e9, \u201cish<\/em>,\u201d generic for \"man,\" since the word gever<\/em> emphasizes \"masculinity\" (gavriut<\/em>) or being \"manly\" (gavri<\/em>). There is a female version \u2013 \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8\u05ea, giveret<\/em> \u2013 but this means more like \"lady\" or \"Mrs.\" \u2013 as in \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8\u05ea \u05db\u05d4\u05df, giveret<\/em> Cohen, Mrs. Cohen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Another noun from this root is \u201cgibor<\/em>.\u201d Ask any Israeli child who or what a gibor<\/em>, is, and they will say a hero. It could be a gibor milchamah<\/em>, a war hero, or a \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8-\u05e2\u05dc, gibor-'al<\/em>, a superhero, of the comic book variety. That applies to \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4, giborah<\/em>, fem., a brave, valiant or heroic female, as well. The classic rabbinic tradition, though, has a very different definition. \u05d0\u05d9\u05d6\u05d4\u05d5 \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8? Eyzehu gibor<\/em>? they asked (Avot 4:1), \"Who is a [true] hero? \u05d4\u05db\u05d5\u05d1\u05e9 \u05d0\u05ea \u05d9\u05e6\u05e8\u05d5, hakovesh et yitzro<\/em>, \u201cone who can conquer their own inclinations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In kabbalistic tradition \u05d2\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4, gevurah<\/em>, is one of the ten sefirot, emanations or facets of God. It is stands opposite to \u05d7\u05e1\u05d3, chesed<\/em> and refers to God's power or judgment, as opposed to mercy or love. The angel \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05d0\u05dc, gavriel<\/em>, Gabriel is connected to this, as the name is to the root. God's power for instance is evident in the triumph of life over death, referenced in the second blessing of the Amidah, \"the standing prayer (also known as the \"prayer of the 18 [blessings]\") that speaks of eternal life, and is known as \u05d1\u05e8\u05db\u05ea \u05d4\u05d2\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea, birkat hegevurot<\/em>. Likewise, a person who has reached the venerable age of 80, is said to have \u05d4\u05d2\u05d9\u05e2 \u05dc\u05d2\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea, higi'a legevurot<\/em>, has reached the age of valor. Now that\u2019s a gever<\/em> (or giveret<\/em>)!<\/span>

Locusts. Darkness.<\/b><\/p>\r\n

The plague of locusts<\/b> (10:1-20) strikes all the vegetation in Egypt, that is, everything that wasn't destroyed by the plague of hail in the last chapter.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The plague is described at length and all the characters in the story appear in the description. This is an opportunity to see what each of them thinks (and plans) at this point in time:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God<\/b> - This is the point where God takes over Pharaoh's heart, reinforcing his refusal to let the Israelites go. Why? \"So that I may show My signs among them\" (10:1). The plagues are signs, and they are an educational process, not only for Pharaoh and his people but also (and perhaps especially) for the Israelites - \"...and that you may tell your son, and your son's son... that you may know that I am the Lord\" (10:3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Moses, and Aaron at his side<\/b> - continue to be the determined emissaries who repeat the message almost every time they speak to Pharaoh: \"Let My people go that they may serve Me\" (10:3), and if you don't...<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pharaoh's servants<\/b> - voice the pragmatic opinion: \"A<\/span>nd Pharaoh's servants said to him: Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Don't you realize yet that Egypt is lost?<\/span>\" (10:7).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pharaoh<\/b> - negotiates (again) over the nature of the celebration in the desert and who will take part - \"who will be going\"? (10:8). Moses insists on a full ensemble and negotiations fail. After the devastating plague Pharaoh apologizes (again) \u00a0and asks Moses and Aaron (again) to put an end to the plague. But when it ends, so does Pharaoh's goodwill (again).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The plague of darkness (10:21-29). <\/b>Three verses (21-23) describe a plague that lasts three days, during which an extremely thick darkness (\"and the darkness was tangible,\" 10:21) which prevents the Egyptians from moving, while \"all the Israelites had light in their settlements\" (10:23).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After the plague, negotiations between Pharaoh and Moses are resumed. Moses' obstinacy infuriates Pharaoh and then this interaction takes place: \"And Pharaoh said to him: <\/span>Get away from me, take heed, and see my face no more; for the day you see my face you shall die. And Moses said: Truly have you spoken; never I will see your face again\" (10:28-29). What does Moses mean? We'll find out in the upcoming chapters...<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

1. The voices of the people<\/b>. When the leader hardens his heart, his servants express both sensibility and distress (10:7): \"<\/span>Don't you realize yet that Egypt is lost?<\/span>\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

2. Darkness during the plague of locusts<\/b>. See V. 15. The description in the verse helps us picture the extent and power of the plague of locusts.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

3. On the wings of the wing<\/b>. The plague of locusts is picturesque both when it comes and when it goes. Note the direction of the wind: \"an east wind\" brings the locusts and \"a sea wind\" - a wind from the west - scatters them (in this context, look for the surprising wording in V. 19).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

4. \"As dark as Egypt.\" <\/b>This is where the popular Hebrew phrase comes from. But to read the description, it's hard to believe that any of us has experienced such darkness...<\/span><\/p>\r\n

5. <\/span>Darkness and light<\/b>.
