What becomes clearer as we approach Chapter 6 is that Moses’ lack of self-confidence was really at the heart of his misplaced lack of trust in the Israelites. Repeatedly in the past few chapters Moses has voiced his worry about his speech impediment and does so once again at the end of Chapter 6: “Behold! This week's portion Va'era contains an understanding of circumcision as not limited to the male sexual organ but as a state of being that is connected to speech. Elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible it is connected to the heart as well, but here Moses protests to God that he won't be capable of convincing Pharaoh to listen to him because, "I am of uncircumcised lips" (Exodus 6:12, 30).

What is this peculiar expression conveying?

The word "a-r-l" for either "foreskin" or "uncircumcised" depending on whether it is literal or metaphorical appears 35 times in our Hebrew Bible and can mean "sealed off" "uncircumcised" or a "fruit tree that has not yet produced its harvest," according to the Even-Shoshan concordance. It can refer to ears (Jeremiah 6:10), the heart (Leviticus 26:41, Jeremiah 9:25, Ezekiel 44:7, 9), and to non-Jews (Judges 14:3, I Samuel 17: 26, 36; Jeremiah 9:25 and others).

So why does Moses see himself as of uncircumcised lips twice in trying to avoid the prophetic commission God is assigning him?

The notion that these concepts share is being closed off to the world, covered over, sealed as Rashi astutely notes on 6:12. Circumcision is a process of opening oneself to the possibility of God's message. For Abraham it is part of his covenant and chance to be "tamim" (Genesis 17:1), "complete." For Moses, if he is willing to convey God's message, he too will be whole, enabling both others and himself to be vessels for the possibility of liberation, not to assume that lips, hearts, ears or sexual organs must always remain impervious to messages of transformation and impermeable to the holy.

That is why though circumcision is physical for men it is readily accessible to all Jews who can carry the metaphorical power of heart and lips that connect us to the message of God both for ourselves and to resist the Pharaohs in our world.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ps21-lips.jpeg","1536x1536-width":534,"1536x1536-height":800,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ps21-lips.jpeg","2048x2048-width":534,"2048x2048-height":800
Parashat The people did not listen to Moses because he had brought them messages from God before and they had done nothing to improve their situation. They were busy trying to survive day by day. So far, so straightforward.

But there is something more subtle going on beneath the surface. When Moses first met God at the burning bush, God told him to lead, and Moses kept refusing on the grounds that the people would not listen to him. He was not a man of words. He was slow of speech and tongue. He was a man of “uncircumcised lips”. He lacked eloquence. He could not sway crowds. He was not an inspirational leader.

It turned out, though, that Moses was both right and wrong, right that they did not listen to him but wrong about why. Written as an accompaniment to Rabbi Sacks’ weekly Covenant & Conversation essay, the Family Edition is aimed at connecting older children and teenagers with his ideas and thoughts on the parsha. Each element of the Family Edition is progressively more advanced; The Core Idea is appropriate for all ages and the final element, From The Thought of Rabbi Sacks, is the most advanced section. Each section includes Questions to Ponder, aimed at encouraging discussion between family members in a way most appropriate to them. We have also included a section called Around the Shabbat Table with a few further questions on the parsha to think about. The final section is an Educational Companion which includes suggested talking points in response to the questions found throughout the Family Edition.
Covenant & Conversation: Family Edition is a new and exciting initiative from The Office of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CCfamilylogo-693x457.jpg","1536x1536-width":693,"1536x1536-height":457,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CCfamilylogo-693x457.jpg","2048x2048-width":693,"2048x2048-height":457
"type_929":"2

In Va’era, the story of the exodus begins in earnest, with an unprecedented series of divine interventions into history.
