The Egyptian attempt to burn them out was unsuccessful because God protects them.

Despite this miraculous metaphor, Moses is skeptical. If he returns to Egypt to take the Israelites out, they will not believe him. First of all, God has never been introduced as “ehyeh” before. A more apt name for God to reveal would have been El-Shaddai. That name was well-known to the forefathers, and was the name that God had used before.

Second, Moses does not seem to use this name later when he speaks to the Israelites. The connection to chapter 6 leads some commentators to explain that Ehyeh is a different version of the Tetragrammaton because it has similar letters. However, that does not explain why God would use this unique version now.

The answer may be that God is not answering Moses’s question at all. The answer to that question arrives later, in chapter 6. Here, God is simply telling Moses not to worry. That God will be with him. The previous times the word Ehyeh appears in Genesis all concern God telling the forefathers that he will protect them on their journey. To Isaac in 26:3: “Reside in this land, and I will be with you (Ehyeh) and bless you,” and to Jacob in 31:3: “Then God said to Jacob, “Return to your ancestors’ land—where you were born—and I will be with you (Ehyeh).” Moses claims he is afraid that the Israelites will not believe him. And as he stood a while gazing upon the bush, he slowly began to realize that this was not just an unusual site (nothing else around it was burning); it was astonishing: a bush aflame but not being consumed. God replies in a cryptic three word phrase, Ehyeh asher ehyeh (Ex. 3: 14).

It is fascinating to see how Christian Bibles translate this clause. To early and medieval Christians alike, this was God's way of describing himself as 'Being-itself, timeless, immutable, incorporeal, understood as the subsisting act of all existing.' The mistake of all these translations is obvious to the merest beginner in Hebrew. The phrase means, 'I will be what I will be.' The verb does not use the present tense…

God does not describe himself as the non-Jewish translations would have it. 'I am that I am' is a translation that owes everything to the philosophical tradition of ancient Greece, and nothing to the thought of ancient Israel. The God of pure being, first cause, prime mover, necessary existence, is the god of the philosophers, not the God of the prophets.

What then is the meaning of 'I will be what I will be'? I am the God of the radically unknowable future, the God of surprises. You will know me when you see me, but not before.'

To be sure, in one sense, the future is connected to the past. God keeps his promises. Avner Moriah’s painting visualizes God revealing Himself to Moses and telling him that he is destined to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. How does the artist portray this awesome event? What in the picture helps us understand why Moses was destined for such a crucial task?

In the center of the painting we see Moses holding a small white kid with three more goats on the ground to his left, a scene that reflects the well-developed tradition of the Good Shepherd in Western art. Legend has it that while Moses was tending the flock one kid escaped. He chased the kid, found him, and carried him in his arms, and so proved himself to be the ultimate shepherd, fit to lead God’s people.

We are told that as he approached Horeb, Moses saw a bush burning in the distance without being consumed by the fire: “An angel of the Lord appeared to him in the blazing fire out of the bush” (Exod. 3: 2), but apparently Moses did not see the angel, for when he heard God calling to him he was overwhelmingly surprised. When God said, “Do not come closer…for the place on which you stand is holy ground” (Exod. 3:5), Moses turned his back to the bush and hid his face “because he was afraid to look at God” (Exod. 3:6).

The artist depicts the burning bush as being exuberantly alive and sets it against the mountain of a later revelation, suggesting that the sneh (bush) is actually Sinai, so what we have here is in effect a combined mini/maxi revelation. There are smudges of red and splashes of yellow, which likely represent the fire, and a large mostly white area to the left behind the bush seems to signal divine intervention. The yellow and green leaves – some attached to the branches and others flying through the air – make it seem as though the bush is covering the entire “mountain of God,” the flying leaves also suggesting the shaking and trembling in the air at the sound of God’s voice. Moses is not facing the burning bush, but rather is turning away from it and hiding his face, a sign of his reluctance to take on this formidable challenge, his timidity at the dawning of his leadership, and his reverence, a distancing himself from direct exposure to the Divine Presence.

Although Moses is careful not to look at God, he does speak to Him and asks His name, and God answers: “Ehyeh-asher ehyeh” (“I Am that I Am”; Exod. 3:14). Referring to the bush, God says: “That shall be your sign that it was I who sent you and when you have freed the people from slavery you shall worship God at this mountain” (Exod. 3:12).

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/13-Shemot.jpg","1536x1536-width":1233,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/13-Shemot.jpg","2048x2048-width":1644,"2048x2048-height":2048
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/13-Shemot.jpg","1536x1536-width":1233,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/13-Shemot.jpg","2048x2048-width":1644,"2048x2048-height":2048
Dr. Julie Lieber is a Jewish educator and is the Director of the Pardes-Kevah Teaching Fellowship. The annual retelling of the Exodus at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue spoke to the Obamas’ African-American identity, who saw in it “a tale that was carried from slavery through the Civil Rights Movement into today.”

Exodus tells the particular story of a particular people, yet its message has been meaningful to a great variety of peoples seeking freedom around the world, including those who do not claim any Israelite ancestry. In the United States, the Biblical Exodus is most immediately associated with African-Americans who found inspiration in its message of hope and liberty during the crush of slavery – perhaps even more than Jews recalled it during their times of persecution. The verses of many African American spirituals were taken from the Exodus story, most famously, “Go Down, Moses.”

Like most spirituals, the precise origins of “Go Down, Moses” are lost to the steamy mists of the Southern plantations. Remarkably, the song’s title-line takes aim at Moses, a privileged Israelite who escaped slavery and had to be convinced to go back down to Egypt to help his fellow Israelites (Exodus 3-4). It is not surprising that the song was used as code by abolitionists like Harriet Tubman seeking to free slaves, and that it was sung by Civil Rights activists who traveled down South to show
