He was also a leader in the making. The simple interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream about cows and ears of grain was that there would be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. That is really all Joseph had to say, but he said far more

Prior to summoning Joseph to interpret his dream, Pharaoh had already heard from “all the necromancers of Egypt and all its (Egypt’s) sages (41:8).” The midrash tells us that these interpretations included predictions that Pharaoh would have seven daughters who would subsequently die or would conquer seven countries that he would subsequently lose. Those interpretations related the basic theme of good followed by bad.

Clearly, Pharaoh was not satisfied by what he heard from his necromancers, because he then summoned Joseph, who provided the interpretation of years of plenty followed by years of famine. It was essentially the same good-then-bad theme as had already been proposed, so what was different in Joseph’s response that warranted Pharaoh putting him in a position of leadership? Something about Joseph’s presentation resonated with Pharoah and made more of an impression on him than the previous interpretations.

Before commencing with his interpretation, Joseph qualified his analysis by making clear that what he was about to say was not opinion, but prophecy from God. Perhaps that carried some weight with Pharaoh, but there was one more significant difference in Joseph’s presentation that Pharaoh rewarded by appointing Joseph to a position of leadership.

Joseph’s response to Pharaoh went beyond offering the minimum of information that was asked of him. The #MeToo movement has shown that a person with power asking for sex from someone with lesser power is premised on the importance of the power, not the sex, though the text helpfully reminds us that Joseph is quite a hunk (39:6). Joseph has failed to decode what Potiphar’s wife is seeking –proof of her dominance over him - which is why her retaliation, putting him in jail (39:20), is so severe.

In jail, he is finally ready to access his interpretative abilities.

What is most striking to a modern reader about Joseph in Egypt, like Esther in the palace of Ahasuerus, is though we are never told that God is speaking directly to either of them, they are both able to act decisively to save their families and people despite not having any explicit divine guidance.

Though Joseph states, “dream interpretations are God’s”(40:8), we don’t know what messages God has given him. What is the Torah telling us about forgetting?

The forgetting in the body of the chapter can readily be seen as a negative phenomenon. When the ugly swallows the beautiful and scarcity swallows plenty leaving no trace or memory of it, it is tragic, and also familiar. Who hasn't had a difficult experience that possessed the demonic qualities of the thin cows and the wind-blown stalks, able to cause a person to forget all the blessings they had known how to enjoy until that point? The impact can be softened by the preparations of a wise Joseph, so that the good can provide a person with some reservoirs from which to draw sustenance, but the memory of those days is almost impossible to maintain alongside a reality of pain and suffering.

But what of the opposite? What do we make of the way the good times make us forget the bad, as they do for Joseph, whose meteoric rise to power allows him to leave behind the memories of "his toil and his father's house", as he expresses through his first-born's name?

The attitude the Torah suggests to this type of forgetting is revealed when we note that Joseph is not the first in the chapter to forget in this way. The butler spent two blissful years back before remembering his promise made to Joseph in the dungeon. This, he tells us, is sinful, and we can add, perhaps impossible. Sinful, in allowing one's comfort to overcome their commitments made in a time of crisis. Impossible, because those commitments are a part of us, as are the experiences of our darker days. To try to forget them is to forget a part of our identity, which has a curious habit of standing up and demand recognition at the very moments we most want to repress it, as Joseph will discover in the coming chapter.

Who hasn't had a difficult experience that caused them to forget all the blessings they had enjoyed until that point? The Tanakh itself, in Deuteronomy (23: 8-9) forbids the marriage of an Israelite man to an Egyptian woman. But one who wishes to claim that this marriage was before the giving of the Torah would find sufficient justification for this marriage that was made by two tribes in Israel, Ephraim and Menasheh.

Our Sages solved this issue of marriage in a different way, seeing Asenath as the daughter of Dinah, Jacob’s daughter who was raped by Shechem son of Hamor, who had miraculously made it to Egypt and was adopted by a childless couple, Poti-phera and his wife. Thus, Asenath became a proper Israelite woman married to Joseph, her mother's brother (See, for example, the midrash in Pirkei D’Rabbi Eliezer Chapter 37).

But a more fascinating answer to this problem is provided by an ancient book, "Joseph and Asenath," written in Greek by a group of Jews in the first centuries CE, possibly in Alexandria, Egypt. This book tells of a rich Egyptian girl, an idol worshiper, who fell in love with Joseph and was charmed by his personality. She decides to correct her ways, destroy the statues she worshipped, fast and pray, and in that way develop a relationship with the God of Israel and eventually to marry Joseph. The story is full of dramatic turning points and plot twists that cannot be summed up in a few sentences, but it seems that its purpose was to encourage women in the Hellenistic world to develop a relationship with the Jews and the Torah by presenting Asenath as a kind of ancient convert worthy of walking in her path. Thus, Asenath - whom the Torah has little to do with - became a powerful personality, a light unto the nations.

https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg
1536x1536":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg","1536x1536-width":150,"1536x1536-height":150,"2048x2048":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg","2048x2048-width":150,"2048x2048-height":150
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/09/624992a179b29-624992a179b2agen41-asenath.jpg.jpg
Who When they prove to be of no use, Pharaoh sends for Joseph. Joseph is not summoned in the same way, Joseph is hurried to Pharaoh. Why not? Pharaoh is the powerful king and Joseph is the lowly prisoner and slave. To skip to the end of this chapter, Joseph is placed in charge of all Egypt (under Pharaoh) to prepare for the coming famine because Joseph is a dream interpreter favored by God with this ability. Surely there must be others capable of organization in Pharaoh’s administration. The change in Joseph’s status then comes from the change in net power from the beginning of the chapter to the end. The Bible tells us that when none of his magicians could interpret Pharaoh’s dreams his chief cupbearer recalled his experience two years earlier when imprisoned with “a Hebrew youth” (Gen 41:12), who correctly interpreted his and the chief baker’s dreams. Pharaoh sent for Joseph and repeated his dreams nearly word for word for the young servant, who not only interpreted them but offered Pharaoh a viable solution.

Why does the biblical text repeat the dreams in detail and not simply note that Pharaoh told Joseph his dreams? How did Joseph, an imprisoned servant, dare to offer the king a solution for his country even before he knew whether Pharaoh had accepted his interpretation?

Avner Moriah suggests some answers using simple patterns for one of the dreams that shrink the repetitions of the fat/lean narratives. The picture is divided into four squares. The one on the upper right shows Pharaoh lying on a red bed, a servant waving fanning him; we see pyramids in the background painted in dreamy shades of pink and purple against a dark night sky. The scene to the left visualizes Pharaoh’s words about standing on the bank of the Nile “when out of the Nile came seven sturdy and well-formed cows and grazed in the reed grass” (Gen. 41:18). These fat cows are painted with black and white checkers.

The square on the lower right shows the lean cows portrayed with yellow and white checkers. The text reads “…seven other cows, scrawny, ill formed and emaciated – never had I seen their likes for ugliness…” (Gen. 41:19). The last scene to the left shows the lean yellow-checkered cows after they had consumed the fat black-checkered cows, which seem to have shrunk to very small frames inside the lean cows. This image underscores what Pharaoh added in the repetition: “but when they had consumed them, one could not tell that they had consumed them for they looked just as bad as before” (Gen. 41:21).

In each of the three scenes the changing cows work with the changing mood. The dream scene on the upper right is the most dramatic. The fat cows, upper left, represent the stable present. They shrink to anemic yellow in the lower right against a foreboding gray sky. The lower left represents the confusing reality, where the presumably healthy cows are consumed by the anemic yellow ones with no effect.

Joseph offers his interpretation about the seven years of abundance being followed by seven years of famine. Eager for Pharaoh to understand that God is guiding his words, Joseph adds his advice about storing food during the good years so that it can be made to last for the lean ones. The larger-size pyramids on the bottom compared to the smaller ones in the left-hand picture above allude to the wealth that Pharaoh will reap during the years of famine from all who will come to buy food.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/10-Mikkets.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1494,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/10-Mikkets.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1991
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/10-Mikkets.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1494,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/10-Mikkets.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1991
Covenant & Conversation: Family Edition is a new and exciting initiative from The Office of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. But when Pharaoh is disturbed by two dreams, his butler remembers Joseph is an interpreter and may be able to help explain them. Joseph tells Pharaoh that the dreams contain a prophecy that there will be 7 good years in Egypt, followed by 7 years of drought and famine, but he also tells Pharaoh he has a solution to the problem – storehouses during the good years to help them survive the bad years. Pharaoh is impressed, and appoints Joseph to be his Prime Minister. Only Pharaoh himself is now more powerful than Joseph.

The famine affects Canaan too, and Joseph’s family struggle, until Jacob sends the ten elder brothers to Egypt to buy sackfuls of food. (Egypt is the only place with extra supplies because of Joseph's plan!) The brothers come before Joseph, but do not recognise him as their brother, because he has now grown up, and is dressed and speaking like an Egyptian. Joseph, however, recognises them immediately.

Without revealing who he is, Joseph creates a situation for the brothers that is designed to test them. He tells them to come back with their youngest brother, Benjamin, and then he accuses Benjamin of stealing from him. The test is this: will they abandon another brother like they abandoned Joseph, or have they learned to be better brothers? We will have to wait until next week's parsha to find out!

Download the Family Edition for Miketz as a PDF

covenant and conversation - It will be such a bad famine that no memory will be remain of the seven previous good years.
