This is Lot’s chapter. Until this point, Lot has been mostly passive. He travels with his uncle Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldees for unknown reasons. He follows him around and becomes wealthy. He requests to live in Sodom, but only because Abraham gives the option. After that, he is captured in the war of the kings and then saved by his uncle.

Now we are given a chance to learn about Lot up close. Chapter 19 comes directly after 18 to give us the opportunity to compare Lot’s actions with Abraham’s. In the first few verses we see the similarities between the two: both sit outside their respective abodes, both rush to great strangers passing by and invite them in, and both Lot and Abraham prepare a feast.

But there are also differences: Lot does everything on his own. Abraham enlists Sarah and the “young lad.” Abraham lives in his tent away from others. Lot lives in a house in the middle of Sodom. This house becomes the central part of the mob scene. Notice how many times the word “door” appears in the story. “So Lot went out to them to the entrance, shut the door behind him”(verse 6), “And they pressed hard against that householder —against Lot—and moved forward to break the door”(verse 9), “But the messengers stretched out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door”(verse 10), and “And the people who were at the entrance of the house (the door), low and high alike, they struck with blinding light, so that they were helpless to find the entrance (the door)”(verse 11).

Why is the door such a central figure here? Rashi quotes a critical rabbincal opinion regarding Noah's righteousness: 'According to his generation he was a tzaddik, however, had he lived in Abraham's generation he wouldn't have been considered anything'

What makes Rashi so sure that Noah, in Abraham's generation wouldn't have been valued?

The answer, I think lies in these chapters. There indeed lived a 'Noah' in Abraham's generation! His name was Lot. There are many similarities between Lot and Noah, even as, naturally, there are differences as well. Lot lived in a society that resembled Noah's generation: Sodom may be considered a microcosm of the 'generation of the flood' – a society where selfishness, violence and illicit and offensive sexual acts reign. In this society Lot is exceptional, maybe a 'tzaddik'. Indeed, like Noah, when that evil society is destroyed God makes sure to save Lot from his neighbors' terrible fate.

However, regarding Lot's redemption an interesting verse catches the eye: 'And God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot from the destruction…' (19:29) . But strip away your stereotypes for a minute and take a careful look at what the Torah describes- what was so evil about Sodom? The emphasis of chapter 19, taken as a unit, paints the picture of a culture of coercive kindness, a society evil in the way it does good.

It begins with Lot, stubbornly insisting the angels stay with him, despite their reluctance. Lot knows exactly what's best for them, outlining in great detail the parameters of their stay. The coerciveness of his hospitality is underscored by the Torah's repetition of the word describing Lot's insistence that it uses for the people of Sodom's "generous" offer, which can almost be read innocently. "Bring them out so that we may get to know them!" Certainly, the intention is sinister, but you can almost hear their moral claim:"how dare you monopolize these visitors for yourself?"

Lot's response continues his Sodomite "generosity", offering his daughters, who, we might guess, did not volunteer themselves. As the chapter closes, Lot's daughters return the favor, raping their father for the good of mankind. They have clearly internalized the dark heart of Sodom, which expresses itself not in evil acts committed as much as in egocentric kindness that is extended without empathy, without real care for the other.

The rabbis encapsulated this attitude perfectly in the image of the "Procrustean bed", which cuts down or stretches out the recipient of kindness in response to the giver's needs.
