The initial motivation to build a tower was so that unified mankind could be together in one place, worshiping God.

It didn’t turn out that way. Among the tower builders were those who hijacked the mission and tried to use the unity to do battle with God. Quoting Sanhedrin 71a, “coming together of evil-doers is bad for them and bad for the world; dispersal of evil-doers is good for them and good for the world, and the reverse is true for the righteous.”

This posting concludes a series of postings that summarize forty-two messages from the first eleven chapters of Genesis, as described in the book Genesis: A Torah for All Nations. One might ask why stop here – perhaps the messages continue throughout Genesis?

The simplest and most obvious explanation is that starting with chapter 12, the Torah focuses on the story of Abraham, the everlasting covenants between God and the descendants of Abraham, and the narrative leading into the Israelite exile to Egypt, redemption, and receiving the mitzvot.

There are two other indications that a major theme and section of the Torah ends with the conclusion of chapter 11.

Many commentators point out that although the final verse (verse 32) concludes with the death of Terach, he actually lived many years after the events of chapter 11, after Isaac was born, until two years prior to Sarah’s death. Commentaries provide various reasons for his death being reported out of sequence.

But one very logical reason is that the Torah is trying to signal that the first eleven chapters are a unit, with a specific purpose – namely, to instruct all people about universal ethical behaviors. The Torah caps it off by finishing the major genealogies that lead up to Abraham, and then starting in chapter 12, there is an entirely new purpose.

There is an additional surprising demarcation that separates these eleven chapters from the rest of the Torah. Rashi has a text for the Torah in which the final letter of verse 32 is a backwards Hebrew letter nun. Three models for the 21st century Jew

The place name, בבל, bavel can refer to: Babel, Babylon, or Babylonia. Each of these ancient "Bavels" suggests a model for the 21st century.

The Tower of Babel (Genesis, 11:1-9) tells how ethnic diversity came into the world, bridging the gap between Noah & Sons, and the historic world of nations and cultures to follow. The dominant image is mutual incomprehensibility, and therefore dispersion, difference, and the loss of a sacred and political center.

Which brings us to the second bavel: Babylon. The Babylonians destroyed the First Temple and the city of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E, resulting in the First Exile. That experience is described poignantly in Psalm 137:

"By the rivers of Bavel/Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion… How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a foreign land? If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not…"

In the first story, Bavel/Babel was the center that was lost in that divinely instigated "exile;" here Bavel/Babylon is the destination they were exiled to, after the loss of the sacred center. And as opposed to the babble of Babel, here the result is – silence; the inability to speak or sing God's songs, in that strange land. Indeed, without Jerusalem speech will be lost, with tongues cleaving to roofs of mouths, and the ability to speak one's identity and desires, gone.

The first Bavel/Babel was an imagined site, invented to explain ethnic dispersion and cultural diversity, a world for whom the idea of a center has been declared anathema. The second Bavel/Babylon was a very real place, the exile an actual historical event, but underlying it too is an idea: a people with a once and future sacred center whose national and cultural identity can only be brought to fruition there.

The third Bavel is also a real place, but is not Biblical – it is Talmudic. It is the Bavel of Babylonia (Iraq) which became a center of the Jewish world after the Romans quashed the Great Revolt of 135 C.E. Bavel/Babylonia became home to generations of sages in centers of learning such as Sura, Nehardea and Pumbedita (now Falluja), which were to remain so for close to a thousand years.

The Babylonian Talmud (the Bavli – "of Bavel") that developed there, is, along with the Bible, the foundational text of Judaism. And with it came the unprecedented reality of another center of legal and intellectual authority, which rivaled, and ultimately exceeded, that other center in the Land of Israel.

The rise of Bavel/Babylonia was a rejection of Ps 137: it moved Judaism itself from a circle, with the Holy Land at its center, to an ellipse, with two centers defining its orbit. And in creating a second vibrant center, Babylonian Judaism opened up the way for many more "centers" to come, throughout Jewish diasporic history.

These three models – Babel, Babylon, Babylonia – represent three numerical possibilities for sacred centers in our lives:

Babel = 0: centralization negated; one world, many tongues;

Babylon=1: the singular center of Zion;

Babylonia≥2: the possibility of two (or more) sacred, cultural or political centers.

929 with its many-sided dialogue, in two languages, raises the question: what should be the model for 21st century Jewry?

https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer24-centers-Bartolomeu_Velho_1568-detail-150x150.jpg
https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer24-centers-Bartolomeu_Velho_1568-detail-300x202.jpg
https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer24-centers-Bartolomeu_Velho_1568-detail-768x518.jpg
https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer24-centers-Bartolomeu_Velho_1568-detail-1024x691.jpg
1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer24-centers-Bartolomeu_Velho_1568-detail.jpg","1536x1536-width":1067,"1536x1536-height":720,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer24-centers-Bartolomeu_Velho_1568-detail.jpg","2048x2048-width":1067,"2048x2048-height":720
https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer24-centers-Bartolomeu_Velho_1568-detail-622x420.jpg

Chapter 11 of Genesis ends with the life and death of Terah, father of Avram. So much is embedded in just those few verses, 26-32: The birth of Terah’s children (Abram, Nachor, and Haran); the birth of his grandson (Lot); the death of his son Haran during his lifetime; the marrying off of his remaining two sons (Nahor to Milka and Abram to Sarai); and Sarai’s infertility. Of this last event we are told, “But Sarai was barren; she had no child” (Gen. 11: 30). After a litany of births recounted in the previous verses (10-25), all encapsulated by the repeating phrase “and [he] begot sons and daughters,” Sarai’s inability to reproduce stands out in stark contrast. How does a family react to infertility, especially in a context of seemingly effortless fertility? How might they cope? Terah offers one method:

“Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and they set out together from Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of Canaan; but when they had come as far as Haran, they settled there” (Gen. 11:31).

Terah responded to family struggle with movement. Perhaps his son and daughter-in-law felt paralyzed by their misfortune and their tragic difference. Perhaps they languished in immobilizing despair. So Terah, one step removed from the situation but deeply affected by it, took matters into his own hands. He “took” his grief-stricken son and daughter-in-law and inspired them to find a way forward. Whether through escape from a pernicious environment that reminded them of their sorrow or through the empowerment born of changing one’s circumstances, Terah inaugurated a journey toward life.

Indeed, lech lecha is what follows. Abram’s journey with God toward covenant and toward progeny will begin in the next verse (Gen. 12:1). One wonders what might become possible when we step away from paralysis, when we embrace movement. The voice of God and of hope just might emerge there.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/dt11-journey.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/dt11-journey.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/dt11-journey.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/dt11-journey.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
Zehava Gal-On is an Israeli politician, serving as a member of the Knesset from 1999 to 2017. Once Melchizedek (traditionally identified as Shem) placed the blessing of Abraham before the blessing of the Omnipresent, God had the priesthood emerge from Abraham in particular, and not from any other descendant of Shem. As it is stated: “And he blessed him and said: Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, and blessed be God the Most High” (Genesis 14:19-20). The others are exiled from God; distanced from the place where they accessed, communicated with, or challenged God. When Abram is told of the future exile, God doesn’t send Abram away; he takes Abram outside. His descendants will be exiled from the land, but not from God. When that exile truly begins, when a terrified elderly Jacob is leading his family down to Egypt, God appears to him in a nighttime vision and says “Don’t fear going down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation. I myself will go down to Egypt, and I myself will bring you back.”

The vicissitudes of our people begin in today’s chapter. Much like in our chapter, the how and why are impossible to understand. The most we can hope for is for God’s continued promise to venture outside with us, and then always lead us back home.

image: The Vision of the Exile at the Covenant of the Parts by Dov Lederberg

Dov Lederberg -
