In chapter 14, Abram leads a band of warriors in a bid to save Lot from captivity in a battle between nine city-states. This chapter once again highlights Abram\u2019s access to the local royalty.\u00a0 At the end of the chapter, the victorious parties gather and are greeted by Melchizedek. Who exactly was this Melchizedek?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashbam and Josephus say that Melchizedek was the generic name for the king of Jerusalem, much like Pharaoh in Egypt. Rashi and the Midrash believe he was actually a priest of God from Jerusalem, and that he may have been Shem the son of Noah. Their proof is in his blessing to Abram:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He blessed him, saying, \u201cBlessed be Abram of God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your foes into your hand\u201d (verses 19-20).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0Abram then gives him a tenth of everything as a gift reminiscent of the <\/span>ma\u2019aser, <\/span><\/i>tithe,<\/span> requirement to Levites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But a close reading of Abram's response to the collective group is telling: \u201cI swear to the <\/span>LORD<\/span><\/i>, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth\" (14:22). Abram mimic\u2019s Melchizedek\u2019s blessing, but adds the name of God. The implication then, is that Abram is correcting Melchizedek. Melchizedek may have been referring to the bull god El and not the LORD. Abram is telling those assembled that it was not just one of any of the local gods who saved him, it was When Abram heard that his brother had been taken captive, he mustered his trained followers born into his household, 318 in number, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. He and his servants split up against them by night and smote them, and pursued them as far as Hovah which is north of Damascus.\u00a0<\/em>(14:14-15)<\/p>\r\n

Reaching the enemy\u2019s encampment after midnight, we could hear the captive women Scream while being raped; the commander split our forces into two and like a pincer
\r\nWe squeezed until the nut of their resistance cracked; north of Damascus, face to face,
\r\nI killed a man.<\/p>\r\n

In his flight, the enemy soldier, panting, his helmet fallen, double-tracked and ran across my path, not knowing he had stumbled unto death. He saw me too late;
\r\nHe pulled out his dagger, but I, quicker, stabbed with my sword; north of Damascus,
\r\nI killed a man.<\/p>\r\n

His head jerked, his arms twitched, and the innards full of blood fell out, staining
\r\nThe soil whitened by moonlight, like dark wine spilled on an infant\u2019s linen blanket.
\r\nHe would have killed me as he and his had butchered children; still I shuddered;
\r\nI killed a man.<\/p>\r\n

One day, south of Jerusalem, these hands which held a sword will hold a wife,
\r\nWill cradle an infant I will father, will plant a vine whose dark wine I will drink.
\r\nBut I shudder still; though no one may smell or see or perhaps even suspect it,

This chapter contains the description of Abraham\u2019s victory war against the four kings, undertaken to rescue his nephew Lot. The Torah then continues: \u201cAfter this, the word of God came to Abram in a vision. He said, \u2018<\/em><\/span>Do not be afraid<\/span><\/em>, Abram, I am your shield. Your reward will be very great\u2019\u201d (Genesis 15: 1). The question is obvious: of what was Abraham afraid? He had just been victorious in battle. He had no cause for fear. The Midrash answers: Abraham was filled with misgiving, thinking to himself, Maybe there was a righteous or God-fearing man among those troops which I slew (Bereishit Rabbah, 44:4).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A moral dilemma arises in cases of conflict between right and right, or between wrong and wrong. Life presents us with many such decisions. There are no easy answers in such cases. If there were, they would not be dilemmas. It is one of the tests of a moral code that it does not present moral choices as easier than they are. There are moral dilemmas. They are a fact of the moral life. There are times when a good human being, even if he or she does the right thing, will still experience (not <\/span>remorse<\/span><\/em> but) <\/span>regret<\/span><\/em>. The Background: A regional war of four kings against five kings, among them the king of Sodom. Abram does not participate in the war.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Pretext: The four kings exploit their success in the war against the king of Sodom and act against Lot, who also \"dwells in Sodom\" (Genesis 14:12) and takes him captive. Lot is Abram's nephew.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Significance: Lot was kidnapped because he is Abram's nephew. \u00a0\"The enemy came only for Lot\" (in the language of Midrash Hagadol), because \u00a0the enemy \"expected Abraham to pay a heavy ransom for the release of his nephew\" (in the language of Sforno).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Brotherhood: Abram quickly learned that \"his kinsman (literally, his brother) had been taken captive\u201d (Genesis 14:14).\" In times of trouble, his nephew is like \u201chis brother.\u201d And a problem that his brother cannot solve himself is a problem for him and he must try to solve it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Amassing the Troops: At Abram\u2019s disposal are \u201chis retainers, born into his household,\u201d (Genesis 14:14) who learned to fight when necessary. Abram arms them (\"he mustered\" them).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Preference for the Military Option: Given that Lot is in enemy hands, Abram has the option to negotiate Lot\u2019s release for a ransom, but he believes that Lot can be released in a military operation, without negotiations, with no ransom; and that is the better option.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Campaign Strategy: Abram's force operates under two commands (\"and he deployed--literally, divided, them\") at the appropriate time (\"night\"). One force attacks and one force works for the release of the captive.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The use of force: One section of Abram's troops fights his enemies and beats them. In their flight, those troops chase after them in order to defeat those in retreat as well. The second force frees Lot \"and also the women and the rest of the people\u201d (Genesis 14:16).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Summary: The objectives of the operation were fully achieved, without losses on Abram\u2019s side and without having to pay any ransom, in accordance with the appropriate rules of conduct in warfare.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Chapter 14 we hear about the blessing of Melchizedek, the king of the city Salem, who blesses Abraham after the rescue of Lot and all the other captives who were captured in battle. Melchizedek celebrates the rescue with a sumptuous meal and a blessing to Abraham and to the God Most High.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our Sages did not like the order of the blessings, as Rabbi Zechariah said in the name of Rabbi Yishmael: \"The Holy Blessed One wanted the priesthood to emerge from Shem, as it is stated: \u201cand he was priest of God the Most High\u201d(Genesis 14:18). Once Melchizedek (traditionally identified as Shem) placed the blessing of Abraham before the blessing of the Omnipresent, God had the priesthood emerge from Abraham in particular, and not from any other descendant of Shem. As it is stated: \u201cAnd he blessed him and said: Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, and blessed be God the Most High\u201d (Genesis 14:19-20). Abraham said to him: And does one place the blessing of the servant before the blessing of his master? Immediately God gave the priesthood to Abraham, as it is stated: \u201cAnd he was priest of God the Most High\u201d (Genesis 14:18), which emphasizes that he, Melchizedek, is a priest, but his children will not be priests (Tractate Nedarim 32b).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Although our Sages viewed unfavorably the fact that Melchizedek places the blessing of Abraham before the blessing of God, I believe that Melchizedek, King of Shalem, has many merits, and may be considered the first copywriter. \u00a0A few moments after he coins the wonderful phrase \"God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth\u201d (14:19), Abraham warmly adopts this designation of God, and in his response to the King of Sodom, he says: \"I swear to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth:\" (14:22).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Since then, many years have passed and every Friday night, when the Amidah prayer in the synagogue ends, the congregations blesses aloud: \"Blessed are You, the Lord our God and the God of our forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, the great, mighty, and awesome God, <\/span>God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth<\/b>.\" <\/span><\/p>\r\n

In a number of days we will read of Abraham's attempt to stave off the destruction of Sodom. This argument with God to is viewed by many as the model of Jewish activism. Abraham will not accept God\u2019s decree. He argues and argues and argues until there is no possibility of repealing the decree and preventing the destruction of Sodom\u2019s residents. Abraham is the enemy of apathy, the advocate of the estranged the abused, and even the wicked.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abraham's intervention is even more remarkable because he is doing his descendants a disservice. God promised Abraham the entire land of Israel. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah will make it easier when \u201cthe fourth generation\u201d returns to Canaan from their enslavement and oppression.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is motivating Abraham? How can a person be so good, so kind, so merciful?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Certainly, he is motivated by justice, and mercy. God reveals the plan because of Abraham's commitment to justice and righteousness. \u00a0But perhaps deep in the recesses of his subconscious there is also some guilt from an encounter in today\u2019s chapter.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When Abraham hears that his nephew was kidnapped he snaps into action. He assembles an army of 318 men and pursue the armies of the four kings. Following a nighttime victory that brings his men all the way to Damascus, Abraham returns south with the inhabitants of Sodom including his nephew, and all of Sodom\u2019s possessions. The grateful king of Sodom greets the returning hero and exclaims \u201cgive me the people, and take the possessions for yourself.\u201d Abraham responds that he wants no association whatsoever with the kings of Sodom. He will not even take a shoelace, lest the king of Sodom claim that he made Abraham rich. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abraham's idealism allows for the people and the wealth of Sodom to return home and quickly restore their culture of wickedness. They go back home as if nothing has happened. What if Abraham had said to the king of Sodom: not so fast. I saved them, I am taking them with me. \u05de\u05dc\u05d7\u05de\u05d4, <\/span>milchamah<\/span><\/em>, \u201cwar\u201d is the beginning, middle and end of this chapter: the somewhat bizarre, almost Tolkienesque, \u00a0tale of the war of the four kings against the five.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But this column is not about wars but about words (occasionally there will be wars of words, and words of war), and what\u2019s important to say about the word <\/span>milchamah<\/span><\/em> here is not so much what it is, but rather what it isn\u2019t. We explore here Hebrew words, and also their roots. Since the (usually) three-letter roots help us uncover core or sometimes even hidden meanings, it is easy to get carried away in looking for connections. But there are coincidences and homonyms in Hebrew just like any other language, and so while meaningful \u201cmidrashic\u201d connections between words are always possible, limited only by the imagination of the <\/span>darshan<\/span><\/em>, the one making up the interpretation, one must take care before proposing an actual historical etymology (word derivation).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And so, a question for those with some Hebrew familiarity: what does the word <\/span>milchamah<\/span><\/i>, \u201cwar\u201d look like? What are some of the main things that people fight over? Hint: there\u2019s a word that appears in this chapter that is often mistaken as being related. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

In verse 18, King Melchizedek of Salem is described as greeting Abraham the returning conqueror, and having \u201cbrought out <\/span>lechem<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> bread and wine.\u201d This is brought out as part of the conclusion of the war, the beginning of the peace. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

So if you said \u05dc\u05d7\u05dd, <\/span>lechem<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> bread - you\u2019re right! That is, you\u2019re wrong. That\u2019s the word many people assume is related, because it seems to make so much sense. \u05dc\u05d7\u05dd, <\/span>lechem<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> bread, seems to be the at the heart of the word for war - as food and resources are indeed some of the main objects of struggle. But again, while there are interesting conceptual connections that can be made - the words themselves are not related.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What are related is the noun \u05dc\u05d5\u05d7\u05dd, lochem<\/em>, \"warrior,\" the verb \u05e0\u05dc\u05d7\u05dd,\u00a0nilcham<\/em>, \"fight,\" and the adjective \u05dc\u05d5\u05d7\u05de\u05e0\u05d9,\u00a0lochmani<\/em>, \"combative.\"\u00a0 Now them's fighting This is the first World War, at least the first in the Bible. A coalition of four northern kings (mainly from Mesopotamia) embarks on a military expedition to the Dead Sea area (the Plains of Jordan). Why? Because five kings from the Plains of Jordan had made an alliance with each other and after twelve years of enslavement to the northern kingdom of Elam they rebelled. On the way to suppressing the rebellion, Chedarlaomer, the king of Elam, and his northern allies, conquer an impressive list of other nations (Genesis 14: 5-7). When they reach the Valley of Siddim, which is in the area of \u200b\u200bthe Dead Sea, they suppress the rebels, conquer and loot them, and take captives.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

At this point, general \u00a0history meets our story. Among the prisoners was Lot, Abram's nephew, who, in the previous chapter, separated from him and chose to settle in Sodom. Abram and his local allies pursue the invading force, subdue them, release the captives, and return all the looted property. That is, almost all the property. A tithe from this was given to Melchizedek, the Priest of Salem (Jerusalem); some of the property was given to Abram's allies. Abram, however, did not take any of the spoils as he says, \u201cI will not take so much as a thread or a sandal strap of what is yours\u201d (verse 23).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \r\n\t
  1. \u00a0<\/span> The prophet Jeremiah (1:14) once said \"From the north shall disaster break loose.\u201d \u00a0This the first time in the Bible, but not the last, that a kingdom from the north is the dominant imperial factor in Canaan. This will occur \u00a0throughout most of the monarchy.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. \u00a0<\/span> Abram, who chases after the invading force, not only releases Lot, but also determines the nature of the northern border to Canaan. This border, incidentally, is quite similar to the border that is recorded in the Book of Samuel during the reign of King David (Samuel 1: 30).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. \u00a0<\/span> Abram is referred to in the chapter \"Abram the Hebrew\" (verse 13).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. \u00a0<\/span> In this chapter we discover that Abram is not a lone wolf. \u00a0He has local allies (Eshkol and Aner) and even a connection to the local priest: \u00a0\u201cAnd King Melchizedek of Salem\u2026was a priest of God Most High\u201d (verse 18).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. \u00a0<\/span> This is the first time in Tanach that Jerusalem is mentioned. It appears in its early and abbreviated name - \u201cSalem\u201d, and it already has a connection to the ritual, priesthood, faith and the giving of tithes.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n
