\"This is the line of Noah.\u2014Noah was a righteous man; he was blameless in his age; Noah walked with God\" (6:9). There is a debate among the commentators whether Noah was absolutely righteous, or just in his generation. The verse itself is ambiguous. Some say that the words \u201cin his generation\u201d must be there to limit the description of Noah as righteous and blameless. The text explains that Noah was righteous <\/span>only<\/span><\/em> in his generation, and that he would be just a regular guy in other generations. Others say that \u201cin his generation\u201d is added to heap praise on Noah. Even though his entire generation was wicked, Noah still managed to be a righteous person.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 7 opens with a similar verse \u201cThen the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> said to Noah, \u201cGo into the ark, with all your household, for you alone have I found righteous before Me in this generation\u201d (verse 1). Does this verse provide more insight into the rabbinical debate? If God is speaking directly to Noah, it would be odd that he would use the opportunity for a backhanded compliment. Noah, I will save you because you are only good in this generation, but if you were in any other generation\u2026good luck!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The fact that God uses the same disclaimer as the verse in chapter 6, may provide proof for the opinion that the earlier qualifier provided additional praise to Noah that he was righteous despite the evils of his generation. Sforno, though, finds a way for this to be limiting without it being a backhanded compliment. He explains that this verse teaches us that Noah\u2019s family was not worthy of being saved. God specially says \u201cyou alone\u201d have I found righteous in this generation. The fact that his family is also mentioned here comes to exclude them from this calculation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Interestingly, God never explains <\/span>why<\/span><\/em> Noah is righteous. Unfortunately, due to the brisk introduction Noah received in the last chapter, we also do not see the type of person he was before the flood. God simply selects him by declaring him righteous. Some of the commentators are upset that we do not see Noah attempting to save the inhabitants of the world, as Abraham will do later on with the inhabitants of Sodom. All we know about Noah is that he enters the Ark and does everything God wants him to do. That may be enough to earn the praise of being a righteous man in an evil world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is not surprising that the story of the deluge takes three chapters of text. It was a major event \u2013 the destruction of civilization! Still, given that the Torah\u2019s general purpose is to teach laws, and chapter 7\u2019s narrative provides an excruciating level of detail about this vignette \u2013 the story\u2019s details arguably do not need to be so completely documented in the Torah. To call this much attention to the deluge implies that there is some fundamental ethical message being provided.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Some commentaries (see for example Chizkuni to 7:21) are troubled as to why mankind was culpable. After all, mankind had not yet received any commandments. This is a puzzling question, since <\/span>Sanhedrin<\/span><\/i> 56b asserts that most or all of the Noahide laws were actually given to Adam in chapter 2. But Chizkuni\u2019s question brings into focus that this large vignette must connect to the Noahide laws.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When looked at from that perspective, one could see that the deluge story actually is a reprise of the seven Noahide laws. It is not a listing of the laws, as in a legal textbook; rather, it is a single vignette that can be understood as a huge cautionary tale to illustrate what happens to a civilization that does not abide by universal moral standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here is how each of the seven Noahide laws show up as part of the deluge story:<\/span><\/p>\r\n
