Aren’t these the most important commandments?

Most of the Ten Commandments are included in some way in the Noahide formulation. Several are direct matches to the Noahide laws – the prohibitions on idolatry, illicit relationships, murder, and theft, for example. Others are not direct matches but are related (the prohibitions on using God’s name in vain, bearing false witness, and coveting).

It is generally accepted that the halachic prohibition of work on the Sabbath (fourth commandment) does not apply to non-Jews, since Exodus (31:17) says the stringent Sabbath observance is limited to Jews. But the omission of honoring one’s parents (fifth commandment) is hard to understand. Of course people should honor their parents! It is the most natural and intuitive emotion. A parent brings a child into the world, nurtures the child, and ultimately brings the child to a level of independence. How can there not be a law to honor one’s parents?

In chapter 2, we described how the first eleven chapters of Genesis include expectations that the Torah has of all people that are not technically Noahide laws, but are still imperatives. Marriage is one such example, and in chapter 9 we find a vignette that indicates that honoring one’s parents is a universal imperative as well.

In the case of honoring one’s parents, it is hard to imagine the first eleven chapters of Genesis without a section that makes clear that all people must do so. This is provided in Genesis chapter 9. It’s a short story. Noah gets drunk. His youngest son Ham sees him naked and physically attacks him in some way. Noah’s older two sons – Shem and Japheth – cover their naked father, carefully preserving his dignity by not looking at him in his naked and degraded state. Noah curses Ham and/or his son Canaan and blesses his other two sons.

What is the simple message? Ham did not respect his father and was cursed. The other two brothers respected their father and were blessed. The generalization is clear: people must respect their parents. This is not a formal Noahide law, because the Noahide laws are prohibitions, and this is a positive imperative. As a result, the Torah does not communicate it in the form of a direct statement, such as the fifth commandment. The Torah uses its narrative style to communicate the imperative.

Interestingly, the Talmud (Kiddushin 31a) attempts to find the world’s best role model for the behavior of honoring one’s parents. It settles on Dama the son of Netinah, who was not Jewish. The Talmud relates that Dama refused to disturb his father’s sleep despite a potentially profitable business deal. The Talmud relates that for this action, God gave a great reward to Dama. Honoring one’s parents is an important behavior – even if not a formal Noahide law.

https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg-150x150.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg-300x96.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg-768x246.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg-1024x328.jpg
1536x1536":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":492,"2048x2048":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":615
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg-1200x384.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/02/61fbf071d2dad-61fbf071d2daegen1-nations-flags-people.jpg-1311x420.jpg
When is a law not a law? He is “Like a sheep being led to slaughter, like a ewe, dumb before those who shear her; He will not open his mouth” (Is. 53:7). But after he drinks only as much as he should he becomes like a lion, claiming that no one in the world is like him. Then, when he drinks more than he should, he becomes like a pig, fouling himself in his own urine and excrement. Finally, when he becomes completely drunk, he becomes like a monkey. He gets up and dances, playing the fool, spouting vulgarities in public without knowing what he is doing. Indeed, after he became drunk, this is just what happened to Noah, the previously God separates the water and the sky in the Creation story and at the end of the Flood the rains cease, and the water remains. God keeps his promise to not intervene. Instead of God cursing, Noah curses his grandson and then provides blessings to his other sons. Written as an accompaniment to Rabbi Sacks’ weekly Covenant & Conversation essay, the Family Edition is aimed at connecting older children and teenagers with his ideas and thoughts on the parsha. Each element of the Family Edition is progressively more advanced; The Core Idea is appropriate for all ages and the final element, From The Thought of Rabbi Sacks, is the most advanced section. Each section includes Questions to Ponder, aimed at encouraging discussion between family members in a way most appropriate to them. We have also included a section called Around the Shabbat Table with a few further questions on the parsha to think about. The final section is an Educational Companion which includes suggested talking points in response to the questions found throughout the Family Edition.
Covenant & Conversation: Family Edition is a new and exciting initiative from The Office of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CCfamilylogo-693x457.jpg","1536x1536-width":693,"1536x1536-height":457,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CCfamilylogo-693x457.jpg","2048x2048-width":693,"2048x2048-height":457
"type_929":"2

Family study materials on Parashat Noach from "Covenant and Conversation"

covenant and conversation - It's an honest mistake. When you attend the ceremony known as a "brit" ("bris"), what you see, if you're standing close enough, is indeed a circumcision. The full name of the ceremony is brit milah, which literally means "the covenant of the circumcision." The brit, part, then, means "covenant." The name of the organization B'nai Brith means "the children of the covenant."

A covenant is a pact or a treaty, entered into willingly by two bodies, creating a relationship based on trust and loyalty, with attending rights and responsibilities.

The first Biblical covenant is here in chapter 9, with Noah and all the survivors of the Ark (9:9-17). Indeed, it is framed as an everlasting pact between God and humanity, and strikingly, between God and every living thing (v. 10), the entire natural world. This covenant has a sign – this one a lot less painful than circumcision – the rainbow.

The next big covenant is between Abram and Sarai and God. The word ברית, brit, covenant, appears in this chapter seven times, there (Gen 17:1-14) 10 times. See also Rabbi Jonathan Sacks' piece in in this chapter about covenant.

The idea of ברית, brit, is central to Jewish existence. The fact that Biblical religion is a covenantal religion, a reciprocal relationship, is fundamental to understanding the nature of the Jewish tradition, the Jewish people and our struggle with our own sources and identity over the millennia. The covenant is what binds us one to the other, and all of us together to a common fate, destiny or mission.

The Tanakh itself is the story of that covenantal relationship, played out over time, and is a testament to it. Indeed, the way the Christian term New Testament is translated is with this word: הברית החדשה, habrit hachadashah, using a term from Jeremiah 31:31, referring to a new covenant that will replace the old. Jews obviously don't endorse that idea, known as "supersessionism," and there are a number of possible Jewish ways to refer to the fact that there is another Bible out there in addition to ours: Jewish and Christian Bible, or Hebrew and Greek Scripture are the two leading candidates.

Finally, there's another important modern use of the word, and idea, of ברית, brit. Since the mid-19th century (that is, before the revival of spoken Hebrew, but as part of the literary revival of Hebrew journalism) the United States has been referred to in Hebrew as ארצות הברית, artzot ha-brit, literally "the lands of the covenant." It's not known why this somewhat poetic turn of phrase was chosen, rather than, say, המדינות המאוחדות, ha-medinot ha-meuchadot, which would be closer to the literal
