Even one of the concluding verses of this week’s parashah tell us the same (Exodus 29:45):

וְשָׁכַנְתִּי בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהָיִיתִי לָהֶם לֵאלֹהִים׃

I will dwell among the Children of Israel, and I will be God to them

God will dwell betoch (בְּתוֹךְ) - in the midst of, in the middle of, in, among, between, through - the Israelites. It’s not necessarily that God’s presence only existed in the Mishkan and the Temples, but that God’s presence, essence, and place of immersion is within each and every Jew. So when we think back to ways in which the Torah and other Jewish texts tell us where and how to practice Judaism, we can also be reminded that holiness is inside of us, spills out through our actions, and is part of how we exist in this world. The ways we embrace shmitah - inside and outside of the Land of Israel, inside and outside of the traditional ways of observing it - can be shifted just as we moved from sacrificial offerings to prayer.

This year is the shmita year: Shmita means a sabbatical year for the Earth but also for ourselves, our communities, and our world. From this verse we derive contemporary messages of equality for all people, including gender equality.

While verse 26 appears to give mankind dominion over the planet, that is immediately limited by verse 29, which restricts the dominion to only eating certain types of foods. Some 21st century readers respond with disgusted dismissal; others, with fundamentalist apologetics. I prefer a third path: carefully rereading God’s words in Genesis 3, while considering their place within their immediate context and within the context of the larger creation story.

When humanity is first created in Genesis 1, man and woman share a name, “Ha-adam,” along with all the characteristics invested in that name. Both woman and man are created in God’s image, unique and infinitely valuable; both confront the world as subjects, not objects. God blesses both equally and charges both to fill the earth and conquer it.

How different are God’s words in Genesis 3, in which rulership (the Hebrew root m-sh-l) replaces equality. Woman is now object to man’s subject; she yearns for him as he controls her.

How can this dramatic descent in woman’s status be explained? Context is key. In Genesis 3, humanity has rebelled against God, and as a result, many essential relationships are negatively affected: between men and the earth, between women and animals, between women and their offspring, between men and women. Viewed in context, we may reasonably conclude that the disintegration of male-female equality is neither natural nor desirable. As with all the other relationships fractured at this moment, it is the unfortunate consequence of humanity’s disobedience.

Moreover, as we read on in the book of Genesis, it becomes evident that God’s pronouncements in Genesis 3 were never meant as permanent mandates. Although God proclaims that man will eat bread by the sweat of his brow, we find that most male protagonists in Genesis are shepherds, not farmers. Logic dictates that man’s subjugation of woman is intended to be no less reversible than his choice of livelihood. While Genesis 3 describes much of what will characterize behaviors and relationships throughout much of human history, at the same time its words challenge readers to seek to repair these fractured relationships. Repair includes overturning gender hierarchy and returning to the state of equality presented in the original creation story.

It is worth noting that in Genesis 1, in which all of creation is deemed by God to be “good,” the only rulership (m-sh-l) mentioned is that of the sun and the moon, created to illuminate the earth.

In this age of “me too” exposures, these biblical messages resound. Rulership in interpersonal relationships—denying the divine image and infinite value of the other, treating the other as object, not subject-- is a sign of the collapse of God’s wishes for equality among human beings. It signals a move away from the luminous sunlight of Genesis 1 and a return to the darkness that preceded God’s creation. In God’s ideal world, the only license to “rule” is granted to heavenly objects, charged with shedding light on humanity, perhaps toward a better, more equal, future. Like many positive Jewish words (such as Shalom, peace, Chaim, life, Yaffa, beautiful, and Tova, goodness) Baruch is also a name: it was the philosopher Spinoza's first name, Latinized as Benedictus, and the last name of the famous financier and statesman, Bernard Baruch (the pronunciation Anglicized to "baroosh").

Berachot, blessings, are acknowledged in all areas of life. Thanks perhaps – but blessing? Traditionally, God is the source of blessing, not an object of one. Indeed, some prefer translating one traditional epithet of God, hakadosh baruch hu, not as "The Holy One, Blessed be He," but rather as "the Holy One of Blessing" or even "the Holy Blessing One" (which also solves the gender issue).

Blessing also has pride of place in the formal liturgy, as in the Jewish "call to prayer" which uses the root twice: barchu et adonai hamevorach, literally, "blessed is the Lord, who is [to be] blessed." This formulation should also be familiar to anyone who has had the honor of being called up to the Torah. It is the minimum that one learns as a bar or bat mitzvah.

This root, however, doesn't just appear in liturgical contexts. A common religious response to the simple question of "how are you?" might be simply, baruch hashem, "blessed be the Name," i.e., "thank God" – the implication being "A-OK." Though here too lies a theological issue. If we bless or thank God when all is well, what are we meant to do when things go awry? The Biblical Job provides the supreme example of an unwavering faith, and also provides a lovely rhymed couplet that summarizes his philosophy: adonai natan, adonai lakach, yehi shem adonai mevorach, "The Lord has given, the Lord has taken, blessed be the name of the
