Our<\/span> chapter<\/span><\/a> deals with the tortuous reign of Joash, 9<\/span>th<\/span> king of Judah, which began when he was just seven years old and lasted 40 years (<\/span>II Chronicles 24:1<\/span><\/a>). The full record\u00a0 of Joash\u2019s life is detailed in<\/span> II Chronicles 22:10-24:27<\/span><\/a>, which retells with some significant changes<\/span> II Kings Chapters 11-12<\/span><\/a>. Indeed,<\/span> our chapter<\/span><\/a> concludes with the notice that the story of King Joash is \u201cwritten in the \u2018midrash\u2019 of the Book of Kings\u201d (compare<\/span> II Kings 12:20<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joash\u2019s life began and ended in violence. For the first six years of his life, he was hidden away to prevent his being murdered by the wicked Queen Athaliah, along with other claimants to the throne (<\/span>II Kings 11:1-3<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> II Chronicles 22:10-11<\/span><\/a>). He died, wounded in battle, murdered in bed by his own servants and not buried in the tombs of the Kings in the City of David (<\/span>II Chronicles 24:25<\/span><\/a>, compare<\/span> II Kings 12:21-22<\/span><\/a>). Scripture records that King Joash \u201cdid what was right in the sight of the Lord\u201d when he was under the positive influence of the prominent Judean priest, Jehoiada (<\/span>II Chronicles 24:2<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> II Kings 12:3<\/span><\/a>). However, with the death of Jehoiada, Joash came under the negative influence of other Judean officials, who led him to idolatry and eventually commanded the murder of the Prophet Zechariah the son of Jehoiada \u201cin the Court of the House of the Lord\u201d (<\/span>II Chronicles 24:17-22<\/span><\/a>). In the better part of his reign, King Joash oversaw the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem, which had been violated by the children of Athaliah (<\/span>II Chronicles 24:7<\/span><\/a>, compare<\/span> II Kings 12:6<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Scriptural account of King Joash is the subject of<\/span> post-Biblical Jewish legend<\/span><\/a>. Interest in the restoration of the Temple is reflected in the controversial so-called<\/span> Jehoash Inscription<\/span><\/a>, a translation of which begins: \u201c[I am Yeho\u2019ash, son of\u00a0 A]hazyahu, k[ing over Ju]dah,\u00a0 and I executed the re[pai]rs\u2026\u201d (for a full translation and discussion, see<\/span> The Jehoash Inscription Tablet -- After the Verdict<\/span><\/a>). An initial announcement in 2003 aroused suspicions as to its authenticity, but seven and a half years of litigation, 150 testimonies and a 500 page judicial opinion, did not result in any major criminal charges. However, the majority of<\/span> scholarly judgment<\/span><\/a> regards this inscription as a modern forgery.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The murder of the Prophet Zechariah described in<\/span> our chapter<\/span><\/a>, was of particular interest to the rabbinic sages.<\/span> Talmud Bavli Sanhedrin 96b<\/span><\/a> relates a legend of how Zechariah\u2019s \u201cboiling blood\u201d was discovered by<\/span> Nebuzaradan<\/span><\/a>, Nebuchadnezzar's general, who was in charge of the destruction of the Temple and the deportation of the people of Judah. Chapter 24 opens with a new king, Joash, who was only seven years old when he rose to power. We are also told that throughout the times of Jehoiada, the Priest, Joash did what was right. Together, king and priest collected money from all of Israel to renovate the Temple. The collection was very successful and besides being able to renovate the Temple, they were able to make utensils needed so that burnt-offerings could be continuously offered. However, as soon as Jehoiada died, Joash began practicing idolatry. The kingdom is then attacked by Aram, and Joash is assassinated.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is difficult to read this chapter and not wonder \u2013 what went wrong? Why would a king that began with the intention of renovating the Temple change so much as to become an idolatrous king? Several commentaries point to what may have led to this change. Rashi said that after the death of the Priest, the officers of Judah came and prostrated themselves, and flattered him, magnifying praises to him to the point of deifying Joash. And, as the text tells us, Joash listened to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This makes us pause and reflect on human nature. On one extreme, there are many people who have issues of self-esteem. Even though they are great human beings, there is an ongoing sense of lack of self-worth. On the other extreme, we see those who always think of themselves as being on pedestal, holier than thou, with a sense of haughtiness. Like most things in life, neither extreme is positive. One should be able to balance these normal feelings of self-worthiness. As is taught by Rabbi Simcha Bunim (1765-1827), \u201cEvery person should have two pockets. In one pocket should be a piece of paper saying: \u2018I am only dust and ashes.\u2019 When one is feeling too proud, reach into this pocket and take out this paper and read it. In the other pocket should be a piece of paper saying: \u2018For my sake was the world created.\u2019 When one is feeling disheartened and lowly, reach into this pocket and take this paper out and read it. (Tales of The Hasidim Later Masters, Martin Buber, p.249-50)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Being young and under the guidance of Jehoiada, Joash was able to be the kind of leader that focused on what had to be done and not on his ego. Being older, having been successful, it was much easier to pat himself on the back. It only took a little push from a group of adulators to convince him he was at the level of a god. This cost him not only all the accomplishments he had reached, but ultimately his life as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 24 tells the story of the two-faced reign of Joash. At first, Joash seems like one of the greater kings of Judah. He plans for the renovation of the Temple to undo the evil done by his grandmother Ataliah and her children. He chastises the Levites (in II Kings 12 it\u2019s the priests) for not working fast enough to collect money to renovate the Temple. Everything seems to be going well. That is until Jehoiada his benefactor passes away. Then everything changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Idol worship begins again and the Temple is ransacked to pay ransom to Aram. The most heinous act is the killing of Zechariah the son of Jehoiada. Zechariah prophesied against the people for forsaking God. \u201cThey conspired against him and pelted him with stones in the court of the House of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>, by order of the king\u201d (24:21). There are two key points in this verse. The first is that Joash himself ordered the killing. The second is that it happened in the Temple itself. Recall that Jehoiada did not want Athaliah executed in the Temple courtyard because it was sacred. How did Joash fall so fast that the son of the man that saved his life was killed on his orders in the Temple?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The commentators are also perplexed and point to verse 17: \u201cBut after the death of Jehoiada, the officers of Judah came, bowing low to the king; and the king listened to them.\u201d The added fact that the officers \u201cbowed low\u201d leads Malbim to explain that the officers began to worship Joash as some sort of god, because the king had lived in the Temple for seven years.\u00a0 Another hint is to be found in verse 22: \u201cKing Joash forgot the loyalty that his father Jehoiada had shown to him, and killed his son. As he was dying, he said, \u2018May the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> see and requite it.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This verse mimics the introduction to the book of Exodus: \u201cA new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph.\u201d (Exodus 1.8). How could a king not know about what Joseph had done to save Egypt in his lifetime? One answer is that Pharoah no longer wanted to admit that this person had helped the previous Pharoah. That it was Pharaoh alone that did it all. He was a supreme god-king. The text describes Joash the same way. When he was treated like a god and not a king he dismissed the help that he had received, which led him down a dark path. He created his own idol: himself. With that he went against all the good he had done in his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

William Shakespeare named one of his comedies: \"All's Well That Ends Well\". A short comparison between the \"ends\" of the two strongest men in the Kingdom of Juda\u05d9 \u2013 King Joash and the High priest Jehoiada reveals much.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

King Joash was murdered by his servants at the age of forty-seven (24:1).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The High Priest Jehoiada died naturally after reaching a ripe old age. He was one hundred and thirty years old at his death (15).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

King Jehoash was buried in the City of David, but he was not buried in the tombs of the kings (25).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The High Priest Jehoiada was buried in the City of David together with the kings (16).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The differences between the \"ends\" of King Joash and the High Priest Jehoiada were influenced by their moral deeds before.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The High priest Jehoiada had done good in Israel, and on behalf of God and His House (16). Jehoiada and his wife saved the life of baby Joash the orphan, raised him as their own son and crowned him as the king of Judah (23:18-20).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

King Joash disregarded the loyalty that Jehoiada and his wife had shown to him, and killed their son \u2013 a priest that was enveloped by the spirit of God (22).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We first encountered King Joash in Chapter 22, where we were told:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When Athaliah, Ahaziah\u2019s mother, learned that her son was dead, she promptly did away with all who were of the royal stock of the house of Judah. But Jehoshabeath, daughter of the king, spirited away Ahaziah\u2019s son Joash from among the princes who were being slain, and put him and his [baby] nurse in a bedroom\u2026 [keeping] him hidden from Athaliah so that he was not put to death. He stayed with them for six years, hidden in the House of God, while Athaliah reigned over the land. (22:10-12)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here, we are informed that \u201cAll the days of the priest Jehoiada, Jehoash did what was pleasing to the L<\/span>ORD\u201d (2) <\/span>and that he <\/span>\u201c<\/span>decided to renovate the House of the L<\/span>ORD\u201d (4).<\/span> On the parallel passage in 2 Kings 12:3, Rashi offered the following surprising comment:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But after Jehoiada died, the officers of Judah came to prostrate themselves before the king, and they deified him. They said to him, \"One who enters the Holy of Holies for only a moment is in danger of dying, yet you were hidden there for six years, so you are fit to be a deity.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In other words, while Jehoiada was alive, Joash was God-fearing. After Jehoiada died, however, Joash began to worship <\/span>asherahs<\/span><\/em> and other idols (18). When Zechariah prophesied against him, Joash had him killed (20). The following year Aram attacked Jerusalem (23), and \u201c<\/span>When they withdrew, having left him with many wounds, his courtiers plotted against him\u2026 and they killed him in bed\u201d (25).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The remaining discrepancies between this chapter and its parallel were summarized by Malbim as follows:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I explained there [2 Kings 12] that there are two different accounts. There it relates that [King Joash] ordered the <\/span>kohanim<\/span><\/em> to take for themselves all free-will offerings and [in exchange] assume the responsibility for repairing the Temple, but they did not undertake those repairs. Here [however], it relates\u2014differently\u2014that Joash wanted to restore the Temple, i.e., to restore it to its beauty at the time of its construction, but the free-will offerings were insufficient [payment] for such an undertaking.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

24:18 \u201cAnd they abandoned the house of the LORD God of their fathers and served the cultic poles and the idols, and there was fury against Judah and Jerusalem because of this guilt of theirs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This turning of Joash to paganism after the death of his mentor Jehoiada is not reported in Kings. The version in Kings does provide an account of Joash\u2019s murder by conspirators, but only here--on what historical basis we cannot know--it is said that he was killed in vengeance for having ordered the death of Jehoiada\u2019s son Zechariah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Comp lit.<\/em> It\u2019s very instructive to compare this chapter to its parallel in 2 Kings 12. This comparison sheds light on the different world views of the various authors of Kings and of Chronicles: Not only their opinions of Joash, but also their understandings of what makes for successes and failures, and how the whole mechanism of reward and punishment works.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Who are you, Joash<\/em>? Are you a good king, or a bad king? Someone who calls the shots - or are you a marionette, manipulated by others, once for good by the priest, and once for evil by the ministers of Judah? It depends who you ask, and which account you believe.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Where\u2019s the money<\/em>? Why is a fundraising drive necessary for the Temple? Where have all the treasures and the sacred possessions gone? One answer is in verse 7.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. A grave isn\u2019t just a grave<\/em>. Jehoiada the priest gets to be buried in the City of David, with the kings of Judah (verse 16). This is an expression of gratitude and respect for his actions in the kingdom, but also hints at who was the real ruler during the reign of Joash - who, by the way, was not given a royal burial, in the tombs of the kings. (verse 25).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Foreign affairs.<\/em> Who were those rebels who killed Joash? According to Kings (2 Kings 12:22): \u201cThe courtiers who assassinated him were Jozacar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer.\u201d According to Chronicles: \u201cZabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess\u201d (verse 26). The guilty parties are not Judan, and they are the sons of foreign women (which was an phenomenon that, according to Ezra and Nehemiah, worried many of those who returned to Zion.
