Jotham gets a very short chapter. Not much really happens during his reign. He was a good king who followed God, but we are told the people still do not follow God with all their hearts. He fortifies the Temple and builds up a few other cities. He also defeats the Ammonites and receives tribute from them. He then dies a peaceful life. Seems pretty simple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

With this simple yet righteous life, the author of the text decides to take the opportunity to \u2018throw some shade\u2019 towards Uzziah, Jotham\u2019s father. The first is an obvious backhanded compliment. \u201cHe did what was pleasing to the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> just as his father Uzziah had done, but he did not enter the Temple of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>; however, the people still acted corruptly\u201d (verse 2). The text links the fact that Jotham was just as good as his father, however, unlike his father, Jotham did not overstep his role by \u201centering the Temple of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The second is a little bit more subtle. \u201cJotham <\/span>was strong<\/strong> because he maintained a faithful course before the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> his God\u201d (verse 6). We already know that Jotham followed God. What does this verse add? It adds a second implied insult to Uzziah. Recall that in chapter 26 we were told \u201cWhen <\/span>he was strong<\/strong>, he grew so arrogant he acted corruptly: he trespassed against his God by entering the Temple of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> to offer incense on the incense altar\u201d (26:16). Uzziah\u2019s flaw was that he became strong and then became haughty. Chapter 27:6 specifically uses the same adjective \u201c<\/span>strong<\/strong>\u201d as in chapter 26. Jotham was strong not because he made himself strong or believed that he made himself strong like his father. Jotham was strong <\/span>because <\/span><\/em>he followed God. This was the lesson his father did not learn, and gives the reader the perfect double dose of biblical shade.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Even a cursory comparison between this chapter and its parallel (2 Kings 15-16) reveals what we have come to recognize as a fixture of Chronicles: a preoccupation with even the physical features of the city of Jerusalem, as well as the Temple, and a keen awareness of the dangers that still lurked about in the antagonism of the surrounding non-Jews.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indeed, the two items that are present here and glaringly absent in Kings are, specifically, King Jotham\u2019s manifold construction efforts and his successful military adventure against the Ammonites:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2 Chronicles 27:3-5<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It was he who built the Upper Gate of the House of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>;<\/span><\/p>\r\n

he also built extensively on the wall of Ophel. He built towns in the hill country of Judah, and in the woods, he built fortresses and towers. Moreover, he fought with the king of the Ammonites and overcame them; the Ammonites gave him that year 100 talents of silver and 10,000 <\/span>kor<\/span><\/i> of wheat and another 10,000 of barley; that is what the Ammonites paid him, and [likewise] in the second and third years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

2 Kings 15:35<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2026 It was he who built the Upper Gate of the House of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n

Bear in mind that the opposition to the reconstruction efforts that was a salient feature of the books of Ezra and Nehemiah\u2014 the reputed selfsame editors\/redactors of the Book of Chronicles\u2014\u00a0 prominently features Tobiah the Ammonite as one of the leaders of that hostility.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Both sources agree that Jotham was essentially \u201cgood\u201d in God\u2019s eyes, save for the persistence of the sacrifices at the \u201chigh places\u201d (<\/span>bamot<\/span><\/i>). Significantly, Kings is more descriptive of that practice: \u201cThe shrines were not removed; the people continued to sacrifice and make offerings at the shrines\u201d (15:35), while Chronicles, characteristically, is more judgmental, calling it: \u201cthe people still acted corruptly\u201d (2).<\/span><\/p>","post_main_content_image":"","post_main_content_embedded_video":"","post_main_content_video_duration":"","post_main_content_show_fb_comments":"1","post_main_content_credit_media":"","tile_top_caption":"Chronicles v. 27:5 \u201cAnd he battled with the kings of the Ammonites and prevailed over them, and the Ammonites gave him in that year a hundred talents of silver and ten thousand <\/span>kors<\/span><\/i> of wheat and ten thousand <\/span>kors<\/span><\/i> of barely. This did the Ammonites bring back to him, and also in the second and third year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Kings does not report this war with the Ammonites, but it may reflect an authentic report from another source on which the Chronicler drew.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  3. Heavy taxes<\/em>. How much tribute did Ammon pay to Judah each year? \u201c100 talents of silver\u201d - a \u201ctalent\u201d is about 30 kg, so about 3000 kilo of silver. And \u201c10,000 kor<\/em> of wheat and another 10,000 of barley.\u201d A <\/span>kor<\/em> is 220 liters, so about 2000 cubic meters (about 57,000 bushels), for both wheat and barley.
