Then Manasseh dies.

In II Chronicles 33, the divergence happens after verse 11. We are also told that God punishes Manasseh by letting the Babylonians capture him and bring him to Babylonia as a captive. Manasseh’s return to God is an amazing fact this late in the game considering how we have seen previous evil kings fail to repent. The ending of Psalm 66 provides a beautiful lesson in godly redemption and forgiveness:

Come and hear, all God-fearing men, as I tell what He did for me. The kingships of Manasseh and Amon are told in the parallel text of 2 Kings 21. The main difference is that the story of Manasseh’s repentance and remediation are only told here in Chronicles.

A crucial difference. Manasseh in Kings is not just another sinful king. He is the king because of whose sins the Temple was destroyed. All the efforts at tikkun that his grandson Josiah undertook were of no avail. “There was no king like [Josiah] before who turned back to the LORD with all his heart and soul and might, in full accord with the Teaching of Moses; nor did any like him arise after him. However, the LORD did not turn away from His awesome wrath which had blazed up against Judah because of all the things Manasseh did to vex Him. The LORD said, “I will also banish Judah from My presence as I banished Israel; and I will reject the city of Jerusalem which I chose and the House where I said My name would abide” (2 Kings 23:25-27). According to Kings, Manasseh is totally guilty in the destruction of the Temple. According to Chronicles, Manasseh mended his ways, and no where is it mentioned that he is responsible for the destruction. Why is it so important for Chronicles to clean Manasseh’s name? It’s less about Manasseh, and more about the message: Chronicles emphasizes that children aren’t punished for their parents’ deeds. Each generation is completely responsible for its own actions and their consequences. So can you guess who will be guilty of the destruction? Hang on for another 3 chapters, until chapter 36 and you’ll know.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","1536x1536-width":1000,"1536x1536-height":1000,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","2048x2048-width":1000,"2048x2048-height":1000
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","1536x1536-width":1000,"1536x1536-height":1000,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","2048x2048-width":1000,"2048x2048-height":1000
