Chapter 34 begins the story of King Josiah, the last of the great kings of Israel. Similar to Hezekiah, Josiah is given an extended introduction beyond the simple \u201che followed in the ways of David\u201d other good kings receive. The following verse in his introduction does not appear in the parallel story in II Kings 22:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201c<\/b>In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David, and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the shrines, the sacred posts, the idols, and the molten images\u201d (verse 3).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The chronicler is very specific about the word choice.\u00a0 \u201cHe began to seek,\u201d in Hebrew \u201c<\/span>az huchal<\/span><\/em>,\u201d is used to introduce a \u201cfirst\u201d, most notably in the opening chapters of Genesis:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cAnd to Seth, in turn, a son was born, and he named him Enosh. It was then that men <\/span>began to invoke<\/span><\/em> the LORD by name\u201d (Genesis 4:26)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cCush also begot Nimrod, <\/span>who began to be<\/span><\/em> a man of might on earth\u201d (Genesis 10:8).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why does the Chronicler want to invoke these two characters of ancient history? To answer that we must look at each person referenced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Enosh was the first person to begin to pray to God. In the ancient world of paganism this one man, on his own, decided to turn toward God. Josiah began his reign at a very dark time for the southern kingdom. The people had just gone through another wicked King. The prophets were announcing pending doom. In this mess, Josiah breaks through, much like Enosh, and calls out to God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Nimrod is most famous as the founder of the ancient Babylonian empire. While Nimrod\u2019s Babylonian empire was not the same as the one now threatening the southern kingdom, it was the precursor to that empire. Nimrod was known for his strength and it is Josiah\u2019s actions to humble himself before God that staves off the invasion by his mighty descendants.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Chronicler links these two ancient figures to emphasize the righteousness of Josiah and highlight his place as one of the great kings of Judah.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our chapter extols the virtues of King Josiah who, although only \u201ceight years old when he became king\u201d (1), nevertheless, \u201cdid what was pleasing to the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>, following the ways of his father David without deviating to the right or to the left. In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David, and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the shrines, the sacred posts, the idols, and the molten images<\/span>\u201d <\/span>(2-3). Robert Alter\u2019s translation (<\/span>v\u2019hu `odenu na`ar<\/span><\/em>) in v.3, however, reads: \u201cWhen he was still a lad.\u201d Is this a proverbial \u201cdistinction without a difference\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Of course, if Josiah ascended the throne at the tender age of 8, then 8 years later he was 16, an age that is both relatively \u201cyoung\u201d and that corresponds, demographically, to the status of \u201ca lad.\u201d And yet, one can perceive a subtle difference between the two expressions.\u00a0 Pseudo-Rashi spotted the correspondence to the description of Joseph as a <\/span>na`ar<\/span><\/em> when he first ran afoul of his brothers by \u201cratting\u201d on them (Gen. 37:2), at which time he was 17 years old, noting: \u201cBut if he were thirty years old, he would not have done it.\u201d In other words, <\/span>na`ar<\/span><\/em> can be an indication of immaturity. The moral of the story, then, is: \u201cIt is, however, surprising, that he (Josiah) was a youth, and nevertheless, he began to seek, etc.\u201d Or, as Alter himself noted: \u201cThe Chronicler may have wanted to emphasize that Josiah\u2019s fabled piety began when he was still an adolescent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Chronicler\u2019s assignment of Josiah\u2019s reformation to \u201cthe twelfth year\u201d of his reign is also at odds with the parallel text in Kings, which connects it with \u201cthe eighteenth year\u201d (2 Kings 23:23). Radak noted this and commented: \u201cHe did not conclude until the 18<\/span>th<\/span> year of his reign, after the discovery of the scroll (14 here), which is when the purification was completed.\u201d As Alter similarly noted: \u201cIn the 12th year... this would be 628 BCE, seven years before the discovery of the book of teaching in the Temple. In Kings, the purging of the apparatus of idolatry is said to take place after that discovery, and the details are different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malbim explained the inconsistency as editorial prerogative, writing: \u201cEzra informed us that he began to abolish idolatry in the 12<\/span>th<\/span> year.   2. Which came first?<\/em> According to Kings, the refurbishment of the Temple led to finding a scroll of the Torah, whose contents led to the widespread cultic renewal. According to Chronicles,\u00a0 the cultic reform preceded finding the scroll, and was not a result of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The descent to depravity and the rise to repentance<\/em>. According to Chronicles, as we read yesterday, Manasseh made a complete repentance and reformed the cult through which he had sinned. His son Amon in fact went back to sinning, but he only reigned two years. According to Kings, Josiah reforms the cult that was very well-established and widespread among the people, after 52 years of Manasseh\u2019s rule. The sin is so deeply rooted, that despite the general reform, the expected punishment of destruction could not be rescinded.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Josiah v. Hezekiah v. David<\/em>. Hezekiah and Josiah are the outstanding Judan kings. Both of them were described as having done \u201cwhat was pleasing to the LORD, following the ways of his father David.\u201d But who got the medal for excellence above and beyond? According to kings, the answer is absolutely Josiah, of whom it was said: \u201cThere was no king like him before who turned back to the LORD with all his heart and soul and might, in full accord with the Teaching of Moses; nor did any like him arise after him\u201d (2 Kings 23:25). Does Chronicles agree with this evaluation? Apparently not.
