The canon as we know it ranges from Genesis through Chronicles. While the \u201cbeginning\u201d is a logical and reasonable place to start, what does the choice of Chronicles as its conclusion communicate? Let us look at the penultimate verses in our Tanakh:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

They burned the House of God and tore down the wall of Jerusalem, burned down all its mansions, and consigned all its precious objects to destruction. Those who survived the sword he exiled to Babylon, and they became his and his sons\u2019 servants till the rise of the Persian kingdom, in fulfillment of the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, until the land paid back its sabbaths; as long as it lay desolate it kept sabbath, till seventy years were completed. (2 Chr. 36:19-21)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This constitutes an explicit declaration of divine providence in history\u2014a theme that underscores rabbinic interpretation of Scripture. But this is neither the end of the text nor, for that matter, the end of the story:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And in the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, when the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah was fulfilled, the LORD roused the spirit of King Cyrus of Persia to issue a proclamation throughout his realm by word of mouth and in writing, as follows: \u201cThus said King Cyrus of Persia: The LORD God of Heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and has charged me with building Him a House in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Any one of you of all His people, the LORD his God be with him and let him go up.\u201d (22-23)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This postscript to history (not coincidentally, also the first verses of the Book of Ezra) signifies that the rabbinic overseers of the canonization process wanted to stipulate that, as Nahum Sarna put it, in his <\/span>The Authority and Interpretation of Scripture in Jewish Tradition,<\/span><\/em> \u201cThe consummation of history involves the ideal of the return of the Jewish people to its land, of the restoration of Jewish sovereignty and of spiritual renewal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":101282,"alt":"","title":"-61f99d2ea1d26--61f99d2ea1d292chron36-bible
