Yet another indication of the Chronicler\u2019s preoccupation with all things Davidic is this chapter\u2019s glossing over the \u201coriginal sin\u201d of the nascent kingdom of Israel: Jeroboam\u2019s two golden calves. Whereas 1 Kings devotes the better part of three chapters (12:25-14:20) to Jeroboam\u2019s activities, all Chronicles has to say about them is: \u201cJeroboam and his sons had prevented them [the Levites] from serving the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>, having appointed his own priests for the shrines, goat-demons, and calves which he had made\u201d (14-15).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Instead, the Chronicler provides a detailed description of Rehoboam\u2019s construction of some fifteen fortified towns throughout Judah and Benjamin, and how he \u201cput commanders in them, along with stores of food, oil, and wine, and shields and spears in every town\u201d (11-12). Malbim explained this Scriptural contrast as follows:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cRehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem\u201d (5): Just as it is narrated in Kings how Jeroboam strategized to strengthen his kingdom, so is it narrated here how Rehoboam acted despite Jeroboam\u2019s numerical superiority. Just as Jeroboam built Shechem into his capital city, Rehoboam resided in Jerusalem, which was already the capital, and, out of his fear of Jeroboam, he built the fortified cities.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The combination of Judah and Benjamin mentioned here prominently, and which continued throughout the balance of the First Temple period, was explained by Pseudo-Rashi here as follows:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cAnd he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin\u201d (1) who were together on the border. Jerusalem belonged to both, and the Temple was built on their common border. In the section dealing with boundaries in Joshua, it explains how their border was shared. Our Rabbis also said (Yoma 12a, Meg. 26a, Zeb. 53b): A strip protruded from the territory of Benjamin and entered the territory of Judah, upon which the altar was built. Therefore, they were inseparable, and they are also mentioned close to one another.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 11 completes the split between the book of Kings and the book of Chronicles. Until this point, the author of Chronicles mostly deleted the stories that made the house of Judah look bad. Now, the book squarely shifts to a chronicle exclusively about the house of Judah. The main way this is shown is by the missing stories from I Kings 13-14 of Jeroboam and the two golden calves that he sets up in the kingdom of Israel and his curse at the hands of the prophet Ahijah. These would seem to be the perfect anecdotes to include to make the Northern Kingdom look bad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But that is no longer the goal of II Chronicles. It is now a history of the Southern Kingdom.\u00a0 The book still tries to spin the story in a positive light for the house of Judah. For example, in Kings, Rehoboam is simply described as a king who went against the ways of his father David and that in his lifetime, the tribe of Judah as a whole angered God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In chapter 11 of Chronicles, however, we learn that all the priests and Levites in the land abandon Jeroboam because of the calves he built (the only reference to the two-chapter length story in Kings). They help fortify the territory of Judah and assist in a three-year time period where the tribe is committed to God. Rehoboam is also described as a master of his own family court by separating his elder sons from his first wives from the sons of his favorite wife. These facts are not mentioned at all in Kings. The Chronicler includes them here to provide more historical context to the reign of Rehoboam, and also to help bolster his credentials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

11:18 \u201cAnd Rehoboam took him as wife Mahalath daughter of Jerimoth son of David, and Abihail daughter of Eliab son of Jesse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abihail would be Rehoboam\u2019s aunt, thus posing two questions: marriage with an aunt is prohibited, and as daughter of David\u2019s oldest brother, she probably would have been rather old. The main point, of course, is that Rehoboam takes pains to ally himself with David\u2019s family in order to reinforce his dynastic claims.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  2. The other side of the story<\/em>. 1 Kings 13 tells of what was happening in the young kingdom of Israel - mainly in the cultic realm, but not only.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The three good years<\/em>. The \u201cdeserters\u201d from Israel to Judah strengthened the southern kingdom during the first three years, while King Rehoboam was still on the strait and narrow: \u201cFrom all the tribes of Israel, those intent on seeking the LORD God of Israel followed them to Jerusalem, to sacrifice to the LORD God of their fathers. They strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and supported Rehoboam son of Solomon for three years, for they followed the ways of David and Solomon for three years\u201d (verse 17). What happens next?
