It occurs so often in fact that it can be considered a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">milah mancha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leitwort<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 of Chronicles. A few examples from I Chronicles are: 2:7, 5:25, 9:1, and 10:13 \u2013 this last example, refers to the \u201ctrespass\u201d of Saul. (Moshe Sokolow looked at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/874\/post\/99111\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what that might be<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand the concept behind this word, we must return to some of its first occurrences. In Leviticus 5:20 for example: \u201cWhen a person sins and<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commits a trespass <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma\u2019al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>) <\/em>against the LORD by dealing deceitfully with his fellow in the matter of a deposit or a pledge, or through robbery, or by defrauding his fellow\u2026\u201d Numbers 5:12 adds another layer: \u201cSpeak to the Israelite people and say to them: If any man\u2019s wife has gone astray and broken faith with him (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uma\u2019ala bo ma\u2019al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jastrow, using the latter verse, defines the word as \"<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">false dealing<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad faith<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or marital faithlessness,\" while the Midrash on the former verse describes it as \u201ccommit a betrayal against the Lord\u201d (Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Chovah, 22:4).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of the word in these earlier contexts can help us to understand why it is used in Chronicles so frequently. The Chronicler is not repeating the narratives of Kings verbatim, rather is attempting to convey a different message. In those earlier books the author explains what went wrong, with the concept of sin and punishment very much to the fore. Here however, the Chronicler seeks to show that God and the nation have a closer, warmer relationship \u2013 one that is akin to a marriage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using this loaded word, he echoes the prophets of the First Temple period (such as Hosea 2:4). Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem\u2014the city the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to establish His name there. His mother\u2019s name was Naamah the Ammonitess\u2026The deeds of Rehoboam, early and late, are recorded in the chronicles of the prophet Shemaiah and Iddo the seer, in the manner of genealogy. There was continuous war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.\u201d (verses 13, 15).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closing verses of a king\u2019s life provides a lot of important summary information. Here we find out that Rehoboam was 41 when he became King. Solomon was king for 40 years, which means that Rehoboam was born while David was still alive. We also find that he reigned for 17 years. This implies that he died at 58. He had a relatively short reign and a short life. We also see that his mother was from Ammon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 13 also has a strange addition referring to Jerusalem as \u201cthe city that the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel\u2026\u201d What does this have to do with Rehoboam? Most likely this was added to further bolster the southern kingdom against the claims of Jeroboam (who was still alive) that the center of Jewish ritual was moved to his golden calves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verse 15 we learn that there were two main prophets in Rehoboam\u2019s time: Shemaiah, who appears in the text, and Iddo, who does not. Iddo seems to be a minor prophet as he is just referred to as a \u201cseer.\u201d We also learn that these two prophets wrote their own books that are now lost. [Judah] imitated all the abhorrent practices of the nations that the LORD had dispossessed before the Israelites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, King Shishak of Egypt marched against Jerusalem\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In keeping with the focus on the monarchy, Chronicles blames the sins of the kingdom of Judah on the actions of the king, Rehoboam, and just as the egregious sins of Jeroboam were glossed over in the previous chapter (as we noted), so, too, are the \u201ctrespasses\u201d of Judah glossed over here.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Rehoboam\u2019s rebellion, Malbim wrote (1):<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One who serves God out of love and for no external reason, save for the sake of God alone, will not swerve from His worship in any shape or form. However, one who serves the Lord for external reasons and other motivations will abandon the Lord the moment those things for which he served Him cease. So did Rehoboam serve God only on account of his understanding that this would strengthen his monarchy against Jeroboam, who worshiped idols. Therefore, while he still feared Jeroboam, he served the Lord; however as soon as Rehoboam's kingdom was solidified and fortified by his construction of the fortified cities, and when many of Israel had fallen before him and he no longer feared Jeroboam, \u201che abandoned the Teaching of the Lord\u201d and all Israel who had previously observed the Torah only on account of the King's The parallel to this chapter is 1 Kings 14, verses 25-31. If you compare, you\u2019ll notice what was added in Chronicles: for instance, the reason for Shishak\u2019s military campaign (verse 2), the prophet\u2019s rebuke, the repentance (verses 5-8) and the resultant forgiveness (verse 12), and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Strength is the ultimate weakness<\/em>. Verse 1 reminds us of the connection between strength and arrogance, and why pride is such a serious problem for faith. We\u2019ve encountered this idea, for instance in Deut. 8:11-18, and in Isaiah 2:11-22.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Historical moment<\/em>. King Shishak of Egypt\u2019s military campaign in Canaan was undertaken around the year 924 BCE. We know about it not only from the Tanach, but also from independent Egyptian sources, primarily the Shishak inscription in the Temple of Amon in Karnak. From this inscription we learn that the central goals of this campaign were the Negev and the kingdom of Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The good, the bad - and the reward and punishment<\/em>. In the story of Rehoboam, the connection between action and reward\/punishment is clear and immediate. If there is a sin - there is a failure, or disaster. If there is trouble - that\u2019s a sign there was sin. And there was also a prophet who warned against the trouble, and gave an opportunity to atone.
