He abolished the shrines, and the incense stands throughout the cities of Judah, and the kingdom was untroubled under him\u201d (14:2-4).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does the text mention twice that Asa destroyed the shrines? The exact same Hebrew word appears in both verses, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Metzudat David seems to pick up on this issue and explains that the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here is used to describe the house of the idol worship. The first verse is the house of worship for the Ashera tree worship and in the second verse, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>bamot<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the houses of worship for the incense shrines. The only issue here is that <em>bamot<\/em> throughout Tanach refers to the homemade backyard altars. It would seem odd that now the text would shift the meaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is another difference between the two verses that may offer some insight. In the first verse, Asa simply destroys the altars and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Then he asks all of Judah to turn to God. Then he abolishes the shrines and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot throughout the cities of Judah<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The third verse describes Asa\u2019s actions after he asks Judah to turn toward God. The first verse, therefore, must have been Asa\u2019s actions in areas outside the cities of Judah. This could have been in borderlands or areas recently conquered. He then turns his sights on his own people. When he abolishes these <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then God makes sure there is peace in the land. The lesson is that it was not good enough to make an outward show in the borderlands. Asa needed to show God that he was willing to do the hard work at home of destroying these <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: After all, if \u201cthe land was untroubled\u201d and \u201che was not engaged in warfare,\u201d why would he need to build fortifications?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ralbag (Gersonides), whose biblical commentaries are distinguished by what he designated as \u201cbenefits\u201c (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to`aliyot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; singular: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to`elet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), explained that two benefits derive to us from the account of Asa\u2019s activities:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first benefit regards character, namely, that a person should try to protect people from harm before it arises, because if he waits until it occurs, he may not have the time to complete [his preparations]. Therefore, it behooves him to make his plans whenever he has the opportunity. That is why it reports that Asa built fortifications in Judah because the land was at rest and he \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urrounded them with walls and towers, gates and bars\u201d (6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second benefit informs us that it is appropriate to recognize who benefits from God\u2019s providence on account of his good behavior, because whatever good one enjoys comes from God to one who walks in His path. It is also fitting to publicize this because it benefits man to reinforce his service of God and the publicity will indicate the benefit of strengthening His worship, as Asa said: \u201cbecause we turned to the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> our God\u2014we turned [to Him] and He gave us respite on all sides\u201d (6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asa\u2019s tremendous victory over Zerah the Cushite, who is reported to have advanced on Judah with \u201can army of a thousand thousand\u201d (8; Alter: \u201ca force of a million\u201d), has raised several significant reservations. The history of King Asa is told in 1 Kings 15:9-24. The Chronicler dedicates 3 chapters to Asa (14-16) and recounts his history differently, and in greater detail. For instance, the story of the war with Zerah the Cushite isn\u2019t related at all in Kings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Zerah the Cushite<\/em>. Who was he? What was he looking for in Judah? Scholars suggest two possibilities. Zerah was an Egyptian General, or perhaps he was a local leader of a band of nomadic soldiers (which would also explain the nature of the conquests and the spoils of war that fell to Judah in verses 13-14).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The few versus the many<\/em>. The war between Asa and Zerah was undertaken in the same way as the war between Abijah and Jeroboam from the previous chapter. The numerical ratios and the power of the fighting forces are not crucial. Some scholars contend that there were Nubian mercenaries in the Egyptian army, but there is no mention here of Egyptians, and a mercenary would not have been put in charge of a vast military force. This Nubian general, moreover, bears a perfectly good Hebrew name. In sum, the historicity of this entire episode is doubtful.
