Asa\u2019s response was to take the gold and silver from the Temple coffers and use it to bribe the neighboring foreign king of Aram to break his peace treaty with Baasha. Asa asked the foreign king to switch his alliance from Baasha to himself. His tactic worked insofar as this king was bribable. An attack was launched against Baasha who subsequently withdrew from the border of Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a prophet came to admonish Asa for relying solely on this foreign king, to the exclusion of engaging with God through prayer, Asa would have none of it. Not only did Asa not want to hear about his wrongdoing, he threw the prophet in prison for accusing him of having wronged God. Immediately after this event, we are told that Asa developed a serious foot ailment, which traveled up through his whole body, causing him to seek the attention of a doctor. Again, there\u2019s no mention of seeking out God for help. Immediately thereafter, we are told of Asa\u2019s death.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reliance on a foreign power. Reliance on a doctor. Death. It\u2019s all recounted in a pretty linear way. The mistake of the foreign power alliance is pretty clear, but what\u2019s the sin in seeking medical attention? Well, nothing in and of itself. In fact, we are commanded to seek medical attention when it\u2019s needed. But note the addition of the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gam, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201calso,\u201d in verse 12. It\u2019s not that Asa sought the help of a doctor, but \u201calso, in his illness, he did not seek God, but the physicians.\u201d That \u201calso\u201d serves as an indicator for how Asa led his life. First, he turned to the physical for help \u2013 foreign kings and doctors, and then, if at all, maybe he turned to God as an afterthought.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two precepts in Jewish tradition: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bitachon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 faith in God; and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hishtadlut<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 human effort. Both are considered necessary, and neither one, on their own, is sufficient. Human effort is successful only if it is predicated on faith. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitachon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is successful only if we\u2019re not relying solely on miracles. Had Asa turned to God and only then to the king of Aram, he\u2019d have demonstrated <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hishtadlut<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bitachon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He missed that mark when repelling Baasha, and God sent Asa a fairly gentle message through a prophet. Sadly, Asa didn\u2019t get the first message. God sent another message via an ailment. This consists of vs. 7-10, which, comparable to the insertion of Azariah the prophet into Chapter 15, introduces \u201cHanani the seer\u201d (7). He seems to be yet another divine messenger unaccounted for in Kings, unless he can be identified with the father of a contemporary prophet, Jehu son of Hanani, who addressed King Baasha in 1 Kings 16:1. While the coincidence of a name and an era may seem insufficient for such an identification, it is supported by a talmudic adage: \u201cAnyone whose father\u2019s name appears alongside his own in a prophetic matter, it is well-known that he was a prophet and the son of a prophet\u201d (Megilla 15a).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The designation \u201cseer\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ro\u2019eh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) occurs most prominently in the attempt by (King) Saul and his servant to locate some missing donkeys by consulting with Samuel (1 Samuel 9:3 ff.). Malbim took the opportunity to define the respective positions and responsibilities apropos of the verse: \u201cFormerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he would say, \u2018Come, let us go to the seer,\u2019 for the prophet of today was formerly called a seer\u201d (1 Samuel 9:9). He wrote:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author of this book shared this information with us lest we wonder why, concerning an ox or donkey or any lost object, people would go to a seer and pay him a fee and give him a gift (1 Samuel 9:7), a practice we do not encounter among any of the prophets in later generations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a distinction between a latter-day prophet and an earlier seer. A prophet (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">navi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is so called on account of his spoken words and rebukes (derived from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">niv s\u2019fatayim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the product of the lips). In chapter 14, he removes the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, orders all to follow God, builds fortified cities, prays to God and defeats an invading army (Cush). In chapter 15, the prophet Azarya ben Oded calls for a national recommitment to God (although it is unclear why), Asa responds with a restoration of the altar, a push for a national oath, God responds with peace, but we are told the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>bamot<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had not been fully removed (even though in chapter 14 text twice says the removed them), and then he brings the gold and silver into the Temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In chapter 16 Israel attacks, Asa <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removes<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the gold and silver from the Temple to send to Aram (and does not seek out God as he did in chapter 15), he defeats Israel with Aram, another prophet comes and excoriates Asa, Asa rejects the prophet and puts him in prison (shades of Jeremiah in the future), he gets sick in his 41<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> year of his reign and only seeks out help from doctors and not God (shades of the book of health with Hezekiah), he then dies. This is more information that we get from I Kings 15.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what kind of King was Asa?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It looks like he followed the same path of Solomon. A righteous king who started out strong and then faltered at the end of his life. It is unfortunate here that we do not get more of an explanation as to why he faltered. For Solomon, we saw that he got too greedy amassing horses and wives. Asa seems to have faltered when the Northern Kingdom attacked him. The attack happened after three decades of peace. Perhaps he misunderstood Azarya\u2019s prophecy from chapter 15:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIsrael has gone many days without the true God, without a priest to give instruction and without Teaching. But in distress it returned to the LORD God of Israel, and sought Him, and He responded to them\u201d (15:3-4).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Northern kingdom amassing against him, they may have returned to God and now had God on their side. Asa may have also felt abandoned by God. Up until this point he had done everything in his power to turn the people towards God. He was rewarded with three and a half decades of peace. The coming armies of the North must have seemed confusing. This will foreshadow Josiah who felt he did everything in his power to turn the nation toward God, but just like Asa could not get rid of all the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Josiah could not get rid of the hidden idols. But, once again - slightly differently.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Who are you, Hanani?<\/em> The seer Hanani (verses 7-10) is not mentioned anywhere else. He may be the father of Jehu son of Hanani, the prophet who, according to 1 Kings 16 prophesied in the days of Baasha, and who, in three more chapters (2 Chron. 19) will reprove King Jehoshaphat, Asa\u2019s son.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Echoes of Zechariah, Samuel and Jeremiah.<\/em> The prophecy of Hanani is reminiscent of ideas and even specific phrases of other prophets. For instance: \u201cFor the eyes of the LORD range over the entire earth,\u201d (see Zechariah 4:10), \u201cYou have acted foolishly in this matter,\u201d (from Samuel\u2019s reproof of Saul, 1 Sam. 13:13), and also Asa\u2019s response to Hanani, \u201cAsa was vexed at the seer and put him into the stocks,\u201d which is similar to the treatment that Jeremiah received at the hands of Pashhur (see Jer. 20 ff.).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Aromatic burial<\/em>. How so? See verse 14.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>His final \u201creward\u201d?<\/em> Asa began well (as told in previous chapters) but ended badly, and apparently died of his illness. What happened? He sinned in relying on a foreign king (and later on doctors rather than on God), and not least, for his cruel treatment of a prophet - and his people.
