Once again the Chronicler confronts us with a different story to that of the book of Kings. There, Jehoshaphat is seen as someone who, in his attempt to reunite the kingdoms of Judah and Israel, allies the house of David with the house of Ahab. The result is his grand-daughter-in-law Athaliah\u2019s attempt at wiping out the entire Davidic line, something she almost succeeds at.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here however, the Chronicler chooses to focus on his internal attempts at strengthening the nation, introduced in this chapter with the verse:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

His mind was elevated in the ways of the LORD. Moreover, he abolished the shrines and the sacred posts from Judah. (17:4)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The word \u201c<\/span>vayigbah<\/span><\/em>\u201d \u2013 and he elevated his heart\u201d (or mind in the JPS translation) is usually used to denote arrogance or pride. But here, it is qualified with the phrase \u201cthe ways of the Lord\u201d. In other words, this qualification changes the meaning \u2013 which Rashi points out on the verse:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

His heart was lifted up in this matter, that he went only in the ways of the Lord. An example of this is (Exod. 35:26): \u201cwhose hearts had uplifted them in wisdom.\u201d (The verse that Rashi brings is about the women who spun the goats\u2019 hair for the Tabernacle; it seems their hearts were uplifted, inspired for their work in beautifying the house of God.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The verses following this one (7-9) elucidate how he sought to change things in Judah\u2019s society: through education.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the third year of his reign he sent his officers Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah throughout the cities of Judah to offer instruction. With them were the Levites \u2026 with them were Elishama and Jehoram the priests. They offered instruction throughout Judah, having with them the Book of the Teaching of the LORD. They made the rounds of all the cities of Judah and instructed the people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It seems that Jehoshaphat\u2019s aim was to make use of the priests and the Levites in one of their primary tasks \u2013 to be educators of the people. Moreover, they were not to wait for the people to come to the Temple, but were to go out into the towns and teach.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Not content with this, Jehoshaphat himself proceeds to walk amongst the people, in chapter 19:4:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jehoshaphat remained in Jerusalem a while and then went out among the people from Beer-sheba to the hill country of Ephraim; he brought them back to the LORD God of their fathers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jehoshaphat reminds the reader of another educator \u2013 Samuel the prophet who \u201cmade the rounds of Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and acted as judge over Israel at all those places (1 Samuel 7:17). Jehoshaphat in Chronicles is held up as an example of a real leader \u2013 one that educates and inspires.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cCircuit riders\u201d were clergy, early on in American history, who traveled around specific territories to minister to settlers and organize congregations. Our chapter informs us of the efforts of certain Judean royal officials who, along with some Levites and priests, performed a somewhat similar function: \u201c<\/span>They offered instruction throughout Judah, having with them the Book of the Teaching of the LORD. They made the rounds of all the cities of Judah and instructed the people\u201d (9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We have already encountered priests as Torah teachers on several occasions, most notably apropos of: \u201cFor the lips of a priest guard knowledge, and men seek rulings from his mouth<\/span>-<\/span> for he is a messenger of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> of Hosts\u201d (Malachi 2:7). A talmudic Aggadah (legend) tells us that the 3rd century Babylonian Amora Rav Hiyya undertook similar instructional efforts.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Reish Lakish was marking the burial vaults of the rabbis. When he came to [mark] the vault of R. Hiyya, he could not find it. He became distressed and asked God: Had he not studied Torah as [R. Hiyya] had? A heavenly voice replied: You have studied as he did, but you have not taught as he did.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Hanina and R. Hiyya were once arguing. The former said: How can you argue with me when if all Torah were forgotten, I could restore it through argumentation? R. Hiyya said: How can you argue with me, when I have ensured that Torah shall not be forgotten from Israel? What did I do? I sowed flax, made nets [from the fibers], trapped deer whose flesh I fed to orphans and made scrolls [from their hides] on which I wrote the five <\/span>chumashim<\/span><\/em>. I then went to a place and taught the five books to five children and the six orders of Mishnah to six children, and told them: By the time I return, read to each other and teach each other (Baba Metzia 85b).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201c<\/b>The L<\/span>ORD<\/span> was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the earlier ways of his father David, and did not worship the Baalim\u201d (verse 3). But David was not Jehoshaphat\u2019s father! Why does the text link Jehoshaphat with his great-great-grandfather? Rashi explains that the verse specifically says that Jehoshaphat followed the \u201cearlier ways\u201d of David. The implication is that he followed the \u201cgood\u201d years of David\u2019s reign, before the infamous census (and the sin with Bathsheba, as Radak adds to this answer).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

While Rashi likes this interpretation, he also brings another answer. Earlier here really means first, as in #1, i.e., the greatest of the earlier kings. Solomon, Rehoboam, Abijah, and Asa all faltered and turned their backs on God at one point. David is the only monarch who steadfastly followed God until the end, even after he sinned. Malbim explains that \u201cthe ways of David\u201d was idiomatic in those days to refer to the \u201cpre-split\u201d years when everyone was united following God, because the kingdom of Israel had mostly abandoned God at this time.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Radak has a slightly different version of Rashi\u2019s second answer. \u201cLike the earlier ways of David\u201d has two components. The \u201cDavid\u201d part refers to all the previous kings of Judah. David then refers to the \u201chouse of David.\u201d The \u201cearlier ways\u201d references the fact that all the previous kings started out righteous, and each in his own way faltered at the end of their reign. This last interpretation of Radak matches better with the next verse \u201c\u2026and did not worship the Baalim, but worshiped the God of his father and followed His commandments\u2014 unlike the behavior of Israel\u201d (Verse 4). It would be strange for the text to use \u201cfather\u201d specifically in one verse and then generally in the second. \u201cGod of his father\u201d means the God worshiped by his father\u2019s house and not specifically the God of Asa. Therefore,\u00a0 it makes sense that \u201chis father David\u201d in verse refers also to the royal house of David.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The designation \u201cIsrael\u201d here for what appears to be the southern kingdom of Judah may reflect later usage, when there was no longer a northern kingdom and \u201cIsrael\u201d came to refer to all that was left. Alternatively, the preposition here could also mean \u201cagainst,\u201d in which case the report of fortifications that follows would indicate Jehoshaphat\u2019s consolidating military strength against his northern rival.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There the story of the reign of Jehoshaphat\u00a0 from Judah is interwoven with the history of the kingdom of Israel, which the Chronicler does not discuss. Chronicles adds to the story in Kings. For instance, this chapter has no direct parallel in Kings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
