In early America (18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centuries, primarily), when strictly Puritan mores and morals prevailed and it was culturally unacceptable to \u201cblaspheme\u201d or otherwise \u201ctake the name of the Lord in vain,\u201d Jehoshaphat substituted for such names as Jesus and Jehovah\u2014probably on account of its assonance and its biblical origin\u2014yielding \u201cjumpin\u2019 Jehosaphat\u201d (technically, \u201can alliterative euphemism\u201d) used as a mild expletive or oath.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":100508,"alt":"","title":"2chron19-swearing cursing He is told that his dealings with the wicked Ahab have angered God, but the fact that he led a righteous campaign eliminating idol worship has saved him. Not content to rest on his laurels, Jehoshaphat begins another education campaign. This one is highlighted by the appointment of teachers and judges throughout the kingdom. Verse 4 provides a nice summary of Jehoshaphat\u2019s campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJehoshaphat remained (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayeshev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in Jerusalem a while and then went out (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayashav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) among the people from Beer-sheba to the hill country of Ephraim; he brought them back (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayeshivem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> God of their fathers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one verse uses the verb \u201cy-sh-b\u201d in three ways. <em>Vayeshev <\/em>meaning \u201cremain\u201d echoes the famous opening of Genesis 37: \u201cNow Jacob was settled, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayeshev<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the land where his father had sojourned, the land of Canaan.\u201d After all his wandering, Jacob finally returns to the land to begin his family. But earlier, we had another king, King David, who settled in Jerusalem and was content with staying in his palace. That led to his sin with Bathsheba.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jehoshaphat does not want to fall into that trap so he returns to the people. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Vayashav<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- like Isaac\u2019s return in Genesis 26:18: \u201cIsaac dug anew the wells which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham\u2019s death; and he gave them the same names that his father had given them.\u201d Isaac was not content with the status quo. He went out to re-dig those wells. Thus, despite the criticism, Jehoshaphat continued to succeed in his kingship.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Echoes of Deuteronomy<\/em>. Jehoshaphat's judicial reform is in the spirit of the book of Deuteronomy.
