They made the rounds of all the cities of Judah and instructed the people\u2026 (verse 6-9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See also the previous chapter, verses 4-5, 8.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These constructive changes were such a departure from the legislative actions of most of the past kings of Judah and Israel, that the text states concerning his rule: \u201c\u2026 (Jehoshaphat was) doing what was pleasing to the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (verse 32).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, three verses later, his ill-fated alliance with the king of Israel is described: \u201cAfterward, King Jehoshaphat of Judah entered into a partnership with King Ahaziah of Israel, thereby acting wickedly\u201d (verse 35).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the negative phrase in v. 35 appears to clarify only the actions of Ahaziah (He did evil, to the exclusion of his ally, Jehoshaphat),\u00a0 the text is sufficiently ambiguous as to allow the conclusion that Jehoshaphat\u00a0 was being criticized for entering into a relationship with such a spiritually corrupt political leader. And indeed, the text states shortly afterwards:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, \u201cAs you have made a partnership with Ahaziah, the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will break up your work.\u201d The ships (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the two had cooperated in constructing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) were wrecked and were unable to go to Tarshish (verse 37).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps an insight into Jehoshaphat\u2019s realpolitik can be gleaned from a word in an earlier verse. When explaining why the King turned to God when his kingdom was being threatened by the armies of the Moabites and the Ammonites, the text states (verse 3): \u201cJehoshaphat was afraid; he decided to resort to the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and proclaimed a fast for all Judah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implication of this term is that had he not been \u201cafraid,\u201d he would not have appealed to God for assistance. First, there is the question of the identity of the \u201cAmmonim\u201d who, along with the Moabites and Ammonites, \u201ccame against Jehoshaphat to wage war\u201d (1). Arguably, the Ammonim and the Ammonites (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u2019nei `Ammon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are one and the same; how come Scripture speaks of them as if they were different?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pseudo-Rashi and Radak offered starkly different answers. Pseudo-Rashi wrote:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonim is Amalek. Why were they called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Because they changed their dress and their language to resemble that of the Ammonites and mingled with them and came to wage war against Israel\u2026as it is written: \"and behold they are in Hazazon-Tamar which is Ein-Gedi\" (2) and Ein-Gedi is close to the territory of Amalek, as is stated in (Gen. 14:7): \"and subdued all the territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazazon- Tamar.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak took note of that same interpretation\u2014which he attributed to \u201cthe Midrash\u201d\u2014but took issue with it, writing, instead:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to explain that this was another nation called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because the Ammonites are never referred to as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but as \u201cthe sons of Ammon.\u201d The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were a different people who were so-called after their place of residence, as in: \u201cThe <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> paid tribute to Uzziah\u201d (2 Chr. 26:8). It is also possible that they are the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Me`unim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are mentioned there (26:7), which is a metathesis [inversion of letters]. This is the correct [interpretation], since their place of residence was Ma`on, which is mentioned in: \u201cThe Sidonians, Amalek, and Ma`on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also oppressed you\u201d (Judges 10:12).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second challenge is posed by v.2: \u201cThe report was brought to Jehoshaphat: A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me`ever layam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), from Aram (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me-Aram<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and is now in Hazazon-tamar\u2014that is, Ein-gedi.\u201d Anyone with even an elementary knowledge of Near Eastern geography knows that to get to the Land of Israel from Aram\u2014present day Syria\u2014there is no need to cross a sea. Here, the venerable Aramaic Targum offered a solution: Recognizing that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also one of the four cardinal directions, it rendered <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me`ever layam me-Aram<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cthe Western side of Aram,\u201d eliminating the This reference may seem innocuous here, but it is the first hint that this story is connected to another story where the Israelites are being pursued beyond the sea, the Exodus story.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the prayer ceremony, a Levite has a prophecy: \u201c\u2019It is not for you to fight this battle; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stand by, wait, and witness your deliverance by the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, O Judah and Jerusalem; do not fear or be dismayed\u2026<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019\u201d (20:17). These words are almost identical to those of Moses after God tells him to stretch out his hands over Red Sea. \u201cBut Moses said to the people, \u2018Have no fear! <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand by, and witness the deliverance which the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will work for you today<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026\u2019\u201d (Exodus 14:13).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the day of the battle, Jehoshaphat gives one last speech to the people. \u201cListen to me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have faith in the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your God and you will stand firm; have faith firmly in His prophets and you will succeed.<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (20:20). After the splitting of the Red Sea the Torah emphasizes the faith of the people in God and his prophet, Moses. \u201cAnd when Israel saw the wondrous power which the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had wielded against the Egyptians, the people feared the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they had faith in the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and His servant Moses<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>.<\/em> (Exodus 14:31).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, following the battle the people return to Jerusalem with musical instruments and sing songs of praise to God. \u201cThey came to Jerusalem to the House of the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to the accompaniment of harps, lyres, and trumpets\u201d (20:28). This of course matches the famous song sung by Moses, the people and Miriam with musical instruments: \u201cThen Miriam the prophetess, Aaron\u2019s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her in dance with timbrels\u201d (Exodus 15:20).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are these two stories linked like this? One answer is that the Chronicler wants us to see the greatness of this miracle. Faced with a massive onslaught, God intervenes and saves the people, in the same way God saved them out of Egypt. But another answer lies in the unity of the people here and in Exodus. Then the people were a nation in its infancy,\u00a0 faced with imminent destruction. Together as one nation they emerged on the other side of the sea. The Chronicler wants to show that unity of faith.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reference to the Exodus period in verse 19 supports this: \u201cLevites of the sons of Kohath and of the sons of Korah got up to extol the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> God\u2026\u201d (20:19). Why not just say the Levites? To show that these two families that fought in the wilderness after the Exodus were united once again. The second half, the summing up of the days of Jehoshaphat, can be found in I Kings 22:41-51. It\u2019s worth comparing to note the adaptation that the Chronicler does to his materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Trouble - outcry - miraculous rescue<\/em>. That\u2019s the structure underlying the story of the war of Jehoshaphat with the nations from across the Jordan. If this structure sounds familiar - you\u2019re not alone. And despite similarities, the relationship of the size of the miracle to human effort is different from other stories in other books (see, e.g., the book of Judges).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Who remembers?<\/em> Before which previous miracle, recorded in the national history, was it told to the people, almost the exact same words as those in verse 17: \u201cStand by, wait, and witness your deliverance by the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d? Hint: see Exodus 14, 854 chapters ago.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Levites and soldiers<\/em>. Note the different jobs in the chapter - what are the various roles of the soldiers, and those of the Levites and the singers?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Bad neighbor<\/em>. That\u2019s the attitude to the kingdom of Israel.
