Our comments on Chapter 18 were directed toward the failure of the Chronicler to recount any of the several remarkable activities of Elijah the prophet. We did observe, parenthetically, that Elijah makes a rather unusual cameo appearance in the present chapter.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Righteous King Jehoshaphat was succeeded by a wicked son, Jehoram, whose first royal act was mass fratricide (4). His reign was characterized by \u201cfollowing in the ways of the kings of Israel\u201d (6), to whom he was related by marriage, and, in particular, the renewal of worship at the \u201chigh places\u201d (<\/span>bamot<\/span><\/i>, 11). It is at this juncture that we read:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A letter from Elijah the prophet came to him which read, \u201cThus says the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> God of your father David: Since you have not followed the practices of your father Jehoshaphat and the practices of King Asa of Judah, but have followed the practices of the kings of Israel, leading astray Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem as the House of Ahab led them astray, and have also killed your brothers of your father\u2019s house, who were better than you, therefore, the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> will inflict a great blow upon your people, your sons, and your wives and all your possessions. (12-14)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The problem is that Elijah appears to have died during Jehoshaphat\u2019s reign, a deduction based on the juxtaposition of his ascent to heaven in 2 Kings 2 and the reference in 2 Kings 3:1 to the 18<\/span>th<\/span> year of Jehoshaphat who reigned 25 years (2 Chr. 20:31). So how could Elijah have addressed a letter to King Jehoram?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pseudo-Rashi and Radak share the opinion that the event was posthumous. As Radak wrote: \u201cElijah appeared prophetically to another prophet and dictated to him the contents of this letter.\u201d Gersonides, however, typical of his often cynical view of <\/span>aggadah<\/span><\/i>, found an alternate resolution: \u201cIt appears from here that Elijah did not die when he was taken from Elisha [in the fiery chariot]\u2026 Elijah was necessarily alive during Jehoram\u2019s reign.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The previous chapter ended with a brief epilogue:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, \u2018As you have made a partnership with Ahaziah, the LORD will break up your work.\u2019 The ships were wrecked and were unable to go to Tarshish (20:37).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It seems as if this self-contained prophecy had an immediate result. But perhaps this prophecy was bigger than a simple shipping expedition. Jehoshaphat\u2019s downfall was not just this alliance with the North, but also the fact that he had his son marry Ahab\u2019s son, and that he went into an alliance with Ahab. This is the second time he was rebuked for doing so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this chapter, the Chronicler points out that Jehoshaphat has many sons. \u201cTheir father gave them many gifts of silver, gold, and [other] presents, as well as fortified towns in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the first-born.\u201d (verse 3).\u00a0 This is a very odd verse. Since Solomon, we have not really seen a question about who the heir should be. It\u2019s always been the oldest son of one of the wives. Why does the text add this point?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It connects to the prophecy at the end of the previous chapter. Jehoshaphat was a great king, but his one weakness was his insistence on working within the \u201crules\u201d for rulers. These rules include making treaties with neighbors and marrying your child to a rival kind in order to make peace. This also includes making your first born son the heir.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jehoshaphat should have seen beyond this. The prophets are telling him that he should not be entering into these alliances with the evil kings of the North because it is the wrong thing to do from a religious perspective. He should also not have chosen Jehoram as his heir. He has many other sons, and as Elijah points out in his letter, Jehoram was not worthy. So when the prophet says \u201cyou have made a partnership with Ahaziah, the LORD will break up your work\u201d it is not just the ships that will be destroyed because of these alliances, but his life\u2019s work as well. All his effort to bring the nation back to God will be swept away in 8 short years by his unworthy son appointed because of a wrong-headed tradition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

21:12 \u201cAnd a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, \u201cThus said the LORD God of David your father: Because you have not gone in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father and in the ways of Asa king of Judah,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The letter is surely fictitious. It is unlikely that Elijah was still alive at this point, and the stories about him are all concerned with his confronting the royal house of the northern kingdom, not Judah. There is also no indication elsewhere that prophets used written correspondence to castigate kings. Elijah was no doubt introduced because he figures as the implacable castigator of the vices of Israelite kings.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Comp lit<\/em>. The parallel to the story of the reign of Jehoram is to be found in 9 verses of 2 Kings 8:16-24. Chronicles devotes 20 verses to it, most of which is not in Kings.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Consolation prizes<\/em>. Jehoshaphat gave the non-inheriting sons \u201cmany gifts of silver, gold, and [other] presents, as well as fortified towns in Judah\u201d (verse 3). Sadly (for them) - they weren\u2019t able to enjoy this largesse. See verse 4 for the grisly details.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The merit of the ancestors.<\/em> If we were to judge Jehoram strictly according to his actions, he didn\u2019t deserve to be king in Jerusalem. So why, despite his evil ways, did he succeed to reign for as long as he did? It was not by his merits, but the merits of King David. Details in verse 7.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Foreign prophet.<\/em> We know Elijah from the Book of Kings as a very dominant prophet in Israel (the northern kingdom), during the days of Ahab. He arrives in Judah in this chapter, via correspondence. But his rebuke is powerful, and the punishment that he prophesies is visited in its entirety.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Dying a bad death<\/em>. \u201cHe departed unpraised (belo\u2019 chemdah<\/em>).
